Ice Maker Not Working? - Check these 6 Things first!

Is your Ice Maker in your Freezer Not Making Ice?
1. Freezer Temp is too Warm: Needs to be between 0-5 degrees. If it is staying higher than that there most likely is an issue with something more complicated. If the temperature is not low enough to freeze the ice, many freezers use the cold from the freezer to create the ice and does not have its own temp. supply. (Did you know a low food load in the freezer can affect the production of ice. More food in the freezer allows temperatures to remain more stable. Ice makers are built to turn off if the freezer reaches too high of a temp.
2. Shutoff Arm or Shutoff Switch is out of Position - Simple check but could easily be the cause.
a. Turned on, Connector is plugged in, ice panel is clear and not blocked.
3. Clogged Water Filter - If not maintained this can stop water flow. You can usually purchase a new filter for between $30- $50. This should be changed out approx. every 6 months. If you have hard water you may want to change it even more often. (If there is a lot of new construction in your area, there can be more sediment entering the water system. This extra sediment can clog filter more frequently)
4. Frozen Water Supply Tube. - This is a small little fill tube. Usually caused by lack of water pressure. This can also be defrosted with a hair dryer. Once line is thawed you can restore power and turn it back on. You should be able to hear water running into the ice maker. If you don’t or water is discolored a technician will need to be called.
5. Water Supply Line - clogged, kinked, or broken water inlet house and valve. (unplug the refrigerator and turn off the valve’s water supply. Unhook the supply line from the fridge and point it into a sink or bucket and turn the water supply back on to make sure water is flowing) Check the filter at the point of entry into your fridge to make sure there is nothing clogging the line.
6. Faulty Door Switch - Icemaker is usually controlled by a door switch, which also controls the lights. If the lights don’t go on when you open the door, the switch may not be working properly.
7. You see ice in the ice maker but it won’t come out: This many times is the cause of a few ice cubes have refrozen in the ice chute causing it to block. Usually taking a long spoon and jabbing at the ice will cause it to dislodge.
Bonus Tips:
• If refrigerator has recently been installed please wait at least 24 hours for it to stabilize and begin ice production.
• Once Ice production has begun it may take up to 48 hours to fill the ice bucket.
• You can always try a hard reset of the icemaker. Use the procedure recommended by the refrigerator’s manufacturer.

I was going to give in and call a repairman to repair/replace my ice maker but then I came across this video. After explaining to my confused wife why I needed to borrow her hair dryer (I'm bald), I started defrosting the water line and now my ice maker is working once again. Thank you!

Helpful information as the ice was not coming out of my refrigerator. Tip #2 showed the location of the ice tray, and I found the ice was stuck together which prevented it from falling down the chute when needed.

Thank you so much, Tyler! When this happened to our previous fridge, all I had for advice to follow was the Sears guy who came out the first time, and he had me unplugging the fridge and leaving it that way for 24 hours, regardless of the fact that I had to find somewhere to save everything inside it, and all he said I could do to help it along was leave the freezer door open and put a fan in front of it to help it dry out! This time, after watching your wonderful video, I knew just where to go to pull out the ice tray, and even though I couldn't specifically see the fill tube, the whole upper portion of the compartment that the ice tray goes into was frozen, so I just followed the same advice as for the frozen fill tube; I unplugged the fridge yesterday, took a hair dryer on its lowest setting, thawed it all off, wiped all the water out till it was as dry as I could get it, plugged it back in, let it do its thing overnight, and this morning it was full of ice, making more as soon as I got some, and totally back to normal! Thanks for your help with this. I was rushed when installing a new water filter and forgot to test it. I realized that I had installed the water filter a week before I realized we had no ice. It took us a week to use up all of the ice in the bin. Then when I tested for water flow, there was none. I removed and then reinstalled the water filter. Voila, water flow and I could hear water flowing into the ice maker.

Thanks for the tips Tyler. I used the hairdryer trick and it didn’t work initially. A few days later I used the hairdryer and a tube from my shop vac to concentrate the hot air on the right area. It started working in no time. I’d already ordered a new ice maker but I no longer need it.

Heads up though if you are going the hair dryer route. DONT hold the dryer on one spot too long, it will melt or disfigure the refrigerator plastic!

I was an idiot and used a kitchen torch… it’ll leave black marks on the plastic so don’t do that. I thought at the right distance it would work lol. It did melt the ice however and it worked again.

Thanks for the tips! It helped me figure out, why, my ice maker was not dispensing ice cubes. I have directions inside my LG refrigerator door (I never realized the directions on the door until your video)and it gave me 3 tips on how to unclog it. So, I removed the ice cube tray and perform surgery. When I looked at the chute, I immediately saw all of the cubed ice sitting on the outside of the, entrance, to the clogged chute. I used my hands to remove those blocking cubes and used a butter knife to push the clogged cubes, downward, that was inside the chute. All of the clogged cubes slid out the chute, onto the floor and Wella! No more clogs and ice is dispensing, as usual. I'm happy.😊

great tips, the hair dryer fix my problem, I had to switch the water filter but I got a wrong one, so I let the water off till next day when I went back to the store to get the right one, the water in the feeding tube to the ice maker was not moving and got frozen, I put the new filter and had cold water, my ice bucket was full from before replacing the water filter; but after a few days the ice bucket was getting almost empty, thanks to your tip I use a hair dryer right to the feeding pipe to the ice maker and water started to run, then I realize that there was ice stock on the ice tray, I put the hair blower right on the ice making tray got it loose and got the space free for new ice to be make, other wise I would probably have water just running of the tray into the bucket and instead of having ice cubes I would be having a block of ice!!

I have a french door KitchenAid freezer on the bottom. Water working to the door, but no ice. I have flushed the line and checked the filter. Any ideas? Manual said remove water filter and it should work if filter was bad. That didn't work either.

My newer LG refrigerator was making ice but not dispensing it and I rlread one of the forums to reduce the temperature of the freezer by - 2 and that solve the problem. Remember it takes 24 hours for this to take effect. Because I was at + 3 and being it's summer you have to decrease the temperature so the ice doesn't melt in the box and that cause it not wanting to come through the ice shoot.

The Samsung model recommends to turn off the supply water line before changing the filter. I did not and it broke some plastic piece and had to have a new ice maker installed.

I have a Frigidaire and it stopped making ice. The only way I can get it to make ice is to hold down the on button for 15 seconds. Then it will make ice for a while and shut off even before full and then I have to do this procedure over and over again to ever get it to make ice. I know the water is getting there because it does make the ice I just don't know what shutting it off. I have not change the water filter in a while could this still be the problem even though it's getting water and making ice after being manually reset?

I had that too, turned out that there was a plastic cover that fell into the ice tray to so the crusher was crushing the plastic cover. You can pull out or reach into your ice tray and see if you see a big plastic square in there.

My KitchenAid 5-Drawer Refrigerator (KRMF706ESS) is making ice, but very little; the container never fills up actually. Any suggestions for what could be causing low ice production and solutions for fixing?

Good stuff! But my problem may be less simple. KitchenAid bottom drawer freezer. No water going to the maker. There is a water dispenser that works fine, so I think that eliminates the filter and water supply. I removed (loosen two screws, remove one, and an electrical connector) and inspected the unit. Nothing obvious. I put it back. Let it sit for an hour, off, with the drawer open. Probed the water tube from the freezer end, no resistance. Opened up the input on the back, and probed there. Again. no resistance. Somewhere there has to be a valve, and I suspect that where the problem is. Put everything back. Listened to it cycling as if to dump ice, over and over. No ice. So I raised the bail and left it shut off. Oh well, ice cube trans for now.

Anyone got a pdf? Diagnostics go from 1 to 46, but I can't tell what they mean. I already checked the hinge wires for shorts and continuity with a multimeter and needle probes.

My ice is still making and it is full i had to shut off but the metal swirl thing that pushes the ice to come out only moves a sec then stops and makes like a “stuck” sound.

I replaced the Water Control Valve inside the fridg and all good EXCEPT my water in the door drips for about 30 seconds after the water is shutoff. Any ideas on how to fix this????

Hy i have a defy model f600lm fridge ice maker tray won't drop ice cubs they stuck and it keeps on pouring water over the ice cubs

I was able to pop ice once and hear water coming out. Now it’s making a sound that sounds like something is stuck. I feel ice in the tray that makes ice but it’s not flipping out the ice. Any suggestions?

I hope one of these works for me. I noticed today my ice maker isn't making ice. The arm is down. It made a few cubes but that was hours ago. I'll try these suggestions tomorrow. I don't want to have to call anybody to fix it. And its 90° 😖
