Flapjack was most definitely an acquired taste, one that not everyone had. And generally the opinions on it are mixed. However, it did inadvertently save Cartoon Network from itself some years later by helping to further the careers of two creators who many may know: J.G. Quintel and Pendleton Ward, the former creating Regular Show and the latter creating Adveture Time, on which another creator, Rebecca Sugar, would work and eventually create her own series, Steven Universe which would help Cartoon Network crawl further away from its near complete meltdown after the disastrous live action era.

That Modest Mouse conection is very interesting, because one of the recurring themes of Isaac Brook´s music is actually the sea. By the time that Flapjack hit Cartoon Network, Modest Mouse already put out the album "We Were Dead Even Before the Ship Even Sank". So it really made sense that Isaac would be fan of the show. Also dont you love the artstyle of Flapjack inspired by pirates, tattoos and old sea art? I swear that no other show looks like that.

As an avid fan of Modest Mouse, I had no idea about the connection between the two until recently. I had forgotten about this show until I found it on Hulu and binge watched it. Every time I'd put it on, I couldn't help but be reminded of Modest Mouse just by the general aesthetic and storyline. When I got to "All Hands on Deck" and heard the intro, my brain just about exploded. After looking into it I also learned that the theme song is inspired by "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was in O Brother Where Art Thou. It's all connected, man!

I caught this show when the first episode aired and I was hooked from the start. Between the odd setting, the esoteric humor and the animation style it was the best CN show of the era. To think it was axed to make way for the worst era in CN history is truly sad. The show had yet to run its course when they canceled it. Looking back, it's even stranger than I remember.
