Just as well I bought my RP with RF 24-240 two years ago on discount. Love it. I do mainly travel grab shots and no video. Since added R50 (and a skin from AliExpress) with RF 100-400 and kit RF-S 18-45

Actually, there was another Canon 3 camera. EOS 3. Back in 1998. It outperformed EOS1N in most specs. Seems, that Canon just tested some solutions on EOS3 and later implemented it in EOS1V.

I think it's going to get a switch. R3 line will go pro body higher MP like the 1Ds from back in the day. I like the smaller size of it compared to the R1, so hopefully, they keep it in some form. Another possibility is it gets them another pro body they can update between R1s...so they are on a 2yr cycle instead of 4+.

Canon could put a high resolution sensor in the R1 and start merging with the R5 series eventually dropping the R5 series and leave the R3 line as a high-end sports/journalism line. The R1 body could facilitate serous future improvements in the R5 line.

Canon is years behind Sony and Nikon in sensor technology. Sony developed a global shutter and Nikon innovated by making a partially stacked sensor. A few years back Nikon had bad autofocus due to their weak processing chip. Not anymore. There's no reason to buy a Canon over Nikon or Sony in 2024.

@@Chopper153 Sure there is, CPS. I know Nikon has NPS but they require you to earn a majority of your income from photography and make it much harder to qualify. I'm a CPS member and get all kinds of great benefits from it and I'm just a series amateur. Canon Nikon and Sony all have great gear and tech but Canons after sales service and support is farther ahead of Nikon and Sony.

The R3 Mk2 is most likely to be the pro body version of the R5. At least this is the hope of many wildlife photographers that would love the R5 Mk2 sensor(or better) in a 1-series body. This leaves the R1 for the sports crowd and the R5 for the events and weddings group.

I wish canon would release a 45mp camera without the vents of the r5ii and in the body of the r3. As a photographer that’s in pretty harsh conditions, those vents are a deal breaker for sometimes like me and the included gps is a massive bonus.

Several insiders have actually said that it was the Nikon Z9 that pushed Canon into rebranding what would have been the R1 as the R3, as the Z9 was a camera with a similar form factor, designed strictly for professionals, but aside from the Z9 having very slightly lower high-speed action keeper rates when it came to autofocus (they'll catch up one day) the Z9 had so many other capabilities that exceeded what would have been (at the time) what the R1 offered, including a shutterless design, a much higher sensor resolution that could still pump out 20 frames per second, and much more robust video capabilities, and so the R1 was then relabeled as an R3 in a marketing attempt to convince all of us that this wasn't meant to be Cannon's true flagship. It admittedly would have been a bit of an embarrassment at the time to say the R3 was really the R1, especially in light of the fact that Sony had also recently released the A1, which was also a more capable camera. To this extent, I concur with Jared that the R3 is a one-off, destined to join the dodo bird as it eventually fades into extinction.

The "the R3 was intended to be the R1" conspiracy theory is silly, and unsupported by any evidence. In 2021 a Canon exec said "While the RF system is a major evolution of the EF system, we believe that in order to bestow an RF camera with the “1” model designation, we must achieve an even greater level of performance [than R3] , and we continue to work towards reaching those high standards." Besides, Canons is a corporate behemoth that's not about to make sudden changes based on what other companies do.

Silly? Evidence ? Quite a few things show clear evidence. How about all the years where Canon did not have a camera they felt worthy of flagship in comparison to other brands? Clearly the R3 was their best pro camera for years, and whether or not Canon marketing wants to agree (or anyone else for that matter) - the r3 was their flagship. Did you remember the price of the R3 at launch? Flagship pricing. - $6k, only 299 less than the new R1. That’s only 5% more and we have had 2-3 years of 6%+ inflation, so the r1 is effectively cheaper than the r3 was at launch. Still think it’s a conspiracy? The Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 led Canon to call the R3 “not the flagship” to convince their user base to stay. A lot of Canon users were shocked, dismayed and downright disappointed when the R1 arrived. The R1 is not much better than the R3. This in itself is evidence the r3 was really the r1, this is not a revolutionary improvement of a camera as Canon hinted they would have. And as for Canon not caring or making changes based on what their competitors are doing, I am quite sure their shareholders and execs would strongly disagree with that thought process. Canon will either grow or die based on their performance in the market. Market disruption of smart phones and mirrorless have already completely altered Canon’s vision and plans. Sony’s global shutter, Nikon buying red have Canon deeply worried and I can only imagine what DJI and dozens of other Chinese manufacturers will do to their plans. Canon R&D for photography is slow to innovate all the while the market is shrinking for cameras and is about to be flooded by lower cost systems with advanced technology. Canon is spending money on other areas that will yield higher profits for them in the future. They will not abandon us, but don’t wait for revolutionary cameras from them anytime soon. I fear those days are for us to remember.

@@troypast3589 the R1 has has a stacked sensor that is faster than a mechanical shutter and cross type AF points. Those things alone set it far apart from the R3 even though they both use the same generation of processor. Canon did not have time to rename an R1 to R3 and the current R1 sticking to 20ish MP shows they never cared for what Sony and Nikon were doing with their pro mirrorless bodies. The next R3 is by all accounts most likely to be a pro body for the R5 sensor for wildlife pros, perhaps at the same time as the 200-500mm f/4.0 TC gets released. People only put the R1 behind other bodies due to it not being 45 MP.... yet as it stands it is the fastest stacked sensor on the market at 1/400 vs the 1/270 of the Z9 and 1/170 of the R3 and R5. If you don't think doubling the speed of their prior generation stacked sensor isn't a huge generational leap, I don't know what you expect.

Canon's flagship cameras have a typical shelf life of four years, and the new ones are released in the year of the summer Olympics. This is 2024, year of the Olympics, and right on schedule Canon has released the R1. I have been saying all along that there would be no R1 until 2024. Now, was the R3 meant to help "fill the gap" in the mirrorless lineup until the R1? Possibly. The 3 Series was always a kind of experimental, try it out series back in the film days, but it was never intended to be the R1, and they changed their minds. That's ludicrous.

I love my R3 and R5 II but I would love if they came out with a R3 II with the R5 II sensor. The R1 seems built for sports make a R3 II built for wildlife and that could be a way for them to continue both lines. I prefer the larger bodies on my 600 F4 and it does focus faster than with the R5 or R5 II, that bigger battery is nice.

I disagree about R3 II not being needed. It can easily offer different features to both R5 II and R1. For a start R3 body is a lot nicer than R5II and many people like that big battery. R3 II should IMO return to APS-H and give it say 36MP, 7.68Md HDR EVF, 40fps, pre-capture etc, 6K60p from 7K, x-type AF ala R1. It could offer less video features than R5II, but counters with higher res EVF but lower than R1, more speed than R5II, dual CF-E type B cards, and 1.3x crop sensor. That should mean a $5199 price.
