I have no camera, no lens, and I am in the market for my first camera. The 6d ii is on a killer deal at the moment, but I feel absolutely terrible going DSLR at this point in history. Strongly considering Sony as my first system, but the lens selection is quite difficult. Sony vs EOS R is a very difficult choice.

Canon, because I’m a fanboy and can’t use objective reasoning to make a choice based on any sort of substantiated claims. Jk. My bias aside I’d like to play w the Nikon since I’ve always had a good experience w their systems whenever I’ve used them.

EOS R for sure.. those new canon lenses seems to be blowing other top of the line canon FF lenses out of the water and it sure will be better to invest in RF system.. you'll have some fun with EOS R and when we get serious, there'll sure be better mirrorless FF bodies from canon to upgrade. Can't wait to see what canon's gonna bring for 16-35 and 70-200 range but if than F2 zoom is any indication to where RF lenses are heading, new lenses will be legendary..

The Nikon is actually 675 grams with the battery and memory card making it the heaviest of the 3. And from what I've seen Nikon's IBIS is superior to Sony's. But neither have a flippy screen, so they can burn in the depths of hell.

This comparison by Jared is the fairest and most logical review so far on these cameras. I would add that a7III has a 1.2 crop with 4K @30, so a real bummer. And the Sony a7III not only has the lowest LCD screen resolution (very hard to see in direct sunlight), it has no pinch in to zoom function in order to review your images, almost unacceptable to me in the year 2018.

Love the honesty that you are a passionate Nikon shooter - I being a passionate Canon shooter since the AE-1 came out always gravitate towards Canon , despite failing your sniff test :) You and I both know each of these cameras can produce fantastic images, have their own strengths and weaknesses, and being honest with what you are going to be doing - Photos, video or hybrid shooting is important. I have owned the EOS R since early Oct and love the results I am getting - 90% photos, one fantastic movie timelapse ( that's a feature that really needs to be talked about ) and a few simple video clips of our children. A stickler for having non-shitty glass ( as you mentioned earlier ), this precludes me from buying a D850 , Z6/7 or a Sony AR7iii and spending another $10K on good glass on top of it. I know there are adapters to throw Canon or Nikon glass on the Sony, so it those get better I might be tempted to try their bodies, but I know and love the results I've achieved with my Canon gear for nearly 40 years. Keep up the fun and the great reviews - all of these cameras would make excellent choices for a new shooter - my advise, like I say about guitars - pick them up, try them, and see what suits you best. We have iconic images for decades , shot without AF, digital, computerized metering, programs, IBIS, etc - it's about taking the time and actually shooting.

I have EOS R and my battery life varies 800-1200 photos, no idea what settings they had that it lasted only for 500-600 shots. Thing I like the most about Canon is their new RF lenses- unlike competitors, they created something new, pushed boundaries and I'm very excited where it will end up in few year time. Yeah, some specs are missing on the Canon side, they could have done better, no doubt, though I believe the person who uses the camera is still more important than the actual gear, in right hands, they'll all do.

I also have the EOS R, and you're right that the battery lasts at least 800-1200 photos. I was confused when he said 500-600 shot?! I think the RF system is really what makes the EOS R a standout if you don't own too much glass yet. Just picked up the new RF 85mm 1.2 and it's phenomenal. With the new glass, ease of use of the flip out screen, and fantastic grip of the camera, I can confidently say I take better photos with the canon than my friends that use sony's, who purchased them based off specs.

Canon mount already showed its potential with the 28-70mm F2. Nobody needs sub f1 glass, but big constant aperture zooms.... don't know if the small Sony mount can do it, cause they would already have done it.

@@chrischan5168 and Emmanuel Macron don't worry about Sony's lens mount. There are already f0.95 lens made in Sony E-mount, as well as Sony Professional movie cameras that use E-mount as well as PL mount lenses ,and are what Oscar-winning Director James Cameron uses on his Sony Venice cameras to shoot his Avatar movie series (two more Avatar features being shot right now with E-Mount and Pl mount lenses) ). Nikon and Canon just want size bragging rights, but Sony tech (and other third-party lens makers) have no problems producing sharp, fast glass for Sony E-Mount.

Gerald Williams I don’t disagree but we’re talking about future proofing... a larger mount and short flange distance will no doubt be very helpful in developing ultra fast, vignettes free, edge to edge sharp glass. I switched from 5d2 to A7R3 (after 30 years on Eos system), I had a similar issue with size - I liked the small size when it came to carrying around, didn’t like it so much in how it fit my big hands. I bought the vertical grip, but that made the camera so much larger it gave away the size advantage. I found a great compromise for me was the addition of the RRS L plate. In fact, with the RRS L plate you can’t detach the vertical part of the plate, leaving just the base plate, if you know you are not going to need to mount in portrait orientation on a tripod much. So I now have just the RRS base plate on all the time, but have the vertical part of the bracket stored with my tripod just in case I need to quickly add it. The base plate adds arca compatibility to the camera and extends the camera grip just enough so it feels like it fits my hands better

I have just purchased my first FULL FRAME camera. Heard about these mirrorless cameras and their capabitities and was really into getting one of as my new business camera. After researching and comparing all the pros and cons including build quality and reliability as well as value for money and critical bonus features, I decided to opt for the Canon 6D Mkii. Not a spectacular video camera like the 5Div, but it has a bit of everything, the most important of which is image quality. Not to mention, no viewfinder lag, vari-angle screen, same processor as the new 5D4, modest MP and no overkill on any AF points or whatever. All for the low price of €1000, brand new. Not bad at all. I'll prob get one of these mirrorless when the hype prices wear off and everyone is over the novelty of them. Meantime, the 6D Mkii just seems an obvious choice for an all round good Full Frame. These mirrorless cameras offer very little worth getting over excited about. The live viewfinder would be class and probably not blind my right eye anymore than it already is from all the years looking too long into the sun, but I just can't justify a new lens system and high price tags for these small advantages.

Hey Jared, I was wondering why you didn't include the Fujifilm X-T3 in this video. I understand that it is not a full-frame camera, but it can do just as many things as any of the other cameras in this video. 10 bit 4k60fps at 400Mbps, two UHS-II card slots, 11fps mechanical shutter, 26MP BSI sensor, and more. One argument can be that a APS-C camera doesn't provide as much depth of field, albeit that can be true, a shallow depth of field isn't necessary in fields of photography and with the Fuji prime lenses at F1.4, you get plenty of light and a very shallow depth of field. Awesome video by the way, a great guide comparing these cameras!

Currently, the EOS R only has 4 and the Nikon has 3 native lenses to chose from. For Sony, they have a complete selection of native FE lenses for 95% of the users out there. Adapters are temporary solutions for people that currently own DSLR lenses. You shouldn't suggest new users to buy an EOS R or Z6, get an adapter and then buy into DSLR lenses, which you specifically said that DSLR are dying.

After trying out the Z6, D7500, EOS 80D & A7 lll, I have to go with the A7 lll (and actually bought it) as my first IL Camera Sony simply has more native lenses for E Mount, a more complete/consistent AF-C system w/Eye AF, dual card slots, full time USB charging with USB C (not that horrible micro USB 3 connector), an EVF and oddly missing from the EOS-R IBIS. It just seems like a more complete system for users starting out, although from a beginners point of view Sony needs to clean up those menus and add more touch functionality but as a tech nerd I can deal with their menu's just fine, also the weather sealing could be better. The ergo of the Z6 was top notch but the AF-C was a more inconsistent compered to the A7 lll for me and tracking AF where you have to keep pushing the ok button to start and push again to end tracking seems like that could been made quicker. Also while the XQD card is super fast and durable, its also super expensive and pretty hard to find. Only the 2 big camera stores (TCS and Vistek) sell XQD cards here in Calgary AB Also I don't get why dual card slots is so polarizing? We are all told, back up your data , just in this case, well it should be no different here. I bet the average consumer would be annoyed at best to have their vacation photos be lost due to a memory card failure so I think more bodies in the consumer world should have dual card slots or some method of redundancy. Its a nice to have for the consumer/enthusiast and IMO essential for anyone shooting paid gigs no matter what type of memory card you have, memory cards can and will fail from SD, to CFast, to XQD.

Have you calculate what body + holy trinity of lenses would cost you for each brand? Most people don't take Into account the price of the lenses. @Rollergold4
@Rollergold4 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ravencroft81 That's a fair question, around here in Calgary the 2 big camera stores (TCS and Vistek) have the EOS R + HT Lenses around $9.3-9.6k CAD, The Z6 + HT Lenses around $10.6-11k CAD and the A7 lll + HT Lenses around $11.7k CAD factored by using as many of the latest 1st party lenses as possible. One can of course knock $1700ish CAD off by going with the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 instead of the 24-70 f2.8 GM and getting the A7 lll and + HT Lenses for around 10k and of course Nikon and Canon users can also get 3rd party alternative lenses for a decent discount as well. I suspect though in 2019-2020 Tamron and Sigma will start releasing more alternatives lenses for Sony as well, flatting out even more of that price disparity. But at the end of the day while the EOS R is the cheaper option by far, I'm willing to bet most folks that can drop $9-9.6 grand CAD on the spot for a camera and 3 lenses could probably swing an extra 2 grand or so for the equivalent Sony or Nikon Kit. Also keep in mind not everyone needs the entire holy trinity lineup of lenses (all depends on what you want to shoot) and fewer still are going to buy all 3 lenses and the body on the spot, most will buy the body and maybe 1 or 2 lenses and buy what extra glass they need later on.

The problem with the Sony is people don't have $5k of spare change from the get go, and buying into the A7 when you don't know how to take good pictures is a great way to make a bad purchase. No one is denying how awesome the Sony is. Frankly, they're making Canon and Nikon look like amateurs here. Sony have crammed so much practical tech inside their A7 that anyone looking to get into photography (like myself) would be sold on the spec sheet alone. The problem is we're looking at just the camera. Sony's ecosystem is a lot younger than Nikon or Canon's so lens options seem few and far between, don't forget either that most of Sony's lenses are still sh*t expensive too. I doubt Nikon or Canon expected Sony to stuff so much into the A7 in the first place. The main reason why they'll always be a front runner is because of their lens catalog. Anyone who's gotten started in photography is either shooting Nikon or Canon. Most are also dedicated users of their brand, all for their own reasons. If I had even £3k's worth of glass invested into either Nikon or Canon the decision would be easy. I've owned Nikon's in the past but now having nothing I'm gravitating towards Canon because they generally seem to have higher quality lenses. Being able to expand my lens options is just the icing on the cake... The Sony is the best value camera currently on the market. But I just don't have an extra $2k on top of the camera price to spend on lenses. The Sony is "good" for people who want to get started today, but they'd also be missing a point that Jared makes every single day - Good glass. If you have $2k and just starting out then buy a cheap FX DSLR or even APS-C body, a good lens and learn how to shoot the damn thing....

KZbin reviews always seem to put a lot of emphasis on the video performance but I always wonder how many people with these kind of cameras ever make videos? Not many, I suspect.
@Ritalie
@Ritalie 3 жыл бұрын
Basically, most DSLR cameras today are used for video. Not that many people use cameras only for photos in 2021. Because nobody owns a video camera anymore, they only own one nice stills camera, and so they use the stills camera for everything, meaning they shoot a lot of videos, even if they don't realize it. From what I can tell, every single review on KZbin is based on the video auto focus, and nothing else. The video auto focus is basically the deciding factor on which camera sells, and right now, it's the Sony A7S III, followed by the Canon 80D, EOS R, 6D Mark II, and Nikon Z6ii, along with other noteable mentions, the Canon M50, Sony ZV-1 and Sony RX100. All of them are lacking critical features, like a side flip screen, or they are way, way overpriced (Sony).

The Z6 came at the right time. I own a D750 system with lots of glass. I started with Photography but my work these days is mainly video (and some stills too). I can't confidently pick up good budget video works because of the not-so-good Video on the D750. Z6 is really good for me. I don't really need the Z7 cuz the only difference between it and the Z6 is in the stills department where my D750 is pretty darn good anyway. So its nice Nikon made the Z6 and saved me from buying the Blackmagic Pocket 4K (I know its better than any DSLR in Video but I don't really need that quality quite yet). The Z series has turned out to be the best thing Nikon did to its users for Video.

I sold my Nikon camera and lenses around 5 years ago - partly because I wasn't into photography anymore and partly because I needed the money. So, coming from a place where I have no equipment, I'd now go for the Sony. They are ahead of the mirrorless game, I like the smaller form factor and it's different, i.e. not Nikon or Canon. Of course I wouldn't buy it if it weren't up there regarding photo-quality and features and so it's the Sony for me. However, the choice of Sony lenses is the only issue and I'm not sure if the third party lenses will make use of all the features of the camera or if some would be disabled ?

Hey Jared, I've tested the USB-charging of the EOS R and you can charge it with any charger (power bank or google pixel charger for example) that provides 3Amps of charging current! Canons proprietary charger output is listed as 5V/3A and 9V/3A. The latter probably is needed if the battery grip is on the R as well, so you need a higher voltage to charge it alltogether. Peace ;)

Canon is merely trying to salvage losing customers and will continue to cripple features so as not to cannibalize its other products. Jared, thank you for admitting to your Nikon bias. I think you under-played Sony but I appreciate your detailed assessment. Users need to get the camera that is the best tool for them and makes them happy.Do our research and try them out. 2018 was the year of the A7III. No other camera can do what it can do at that price point. It even canabalized its own A7RIII and A9. The video capabilites of this camera is phenomenal and it's not covered enough here. Ya'll can argue about how long you can make your camera with that hideous adapter with but native lenses do matter. I don't need 10lbs of camera in this price bracket. Did anyone not mention that this is a mirrorless line? The A7III paired with the Tamron will get you 99% of your photo and video at full frame or 4K at less than $3k I doubt there will ever be a camera like the A7III in the near future as it has proven and still proving that it's the best bang for your buck and extremely well rounded camera. Good luck to everyone still trying to get their Tamrons in by Christmas.

On the lenses: The checkmark could still go to the EOS I guess, since it's native... But it's worth mentioning that Sony has an adapter that can take Canon lenses, and the AF works almost flawlessly on it (search KZbin, it's pretty amazing). So if you owned Canon lenses and were factoring that into your decision, you would have to consider that if you bought the Sony and an adapter, you'd be fine, and still have vastly better AF than if you used your Canon lenses on the Canon EOS R lol.

@MicheletDiez 5 жыл бұрын
steve blow I agree on the lens collector, but is you as a photographer that needs to start refining only to the lens you use for your work. Now, in regards of the 4k, I couldn’t care less, I normally don’t film in 4k, I could care a bit more about the 120fps or the low light capabilities of the Sony. But at the end my work is more focused on producing photos than video. Reason I prefer Canon. If the story was different and I was focused on working with video, Sony of course would be a better choice. But then again, Sony lenses are expensive AF.

@@Lofote They don't focus as well as they do on the Canon. Canon is soon to release its first firmware update to improve eye AF and allow it to work with continuous AF, as per the Sonys. I guess only time will tell how well it works. Canon also filed a patent for IBIS some months back, so that will most likely appear in their pro body. What Jared didn't mention, but can be seen in Tony Northrup's side-by-side image comparisons, is that the EOS R captures noticeably sharper and more detailed still images than the A7iii or the Z6 cameras. Mainly due to the extra MP, as the A7Riii images are noticeably sharper and more detailed than the EOS R images.

My Z7 and also Z6 have very responsive touch focusing. It works great and it many times more responsive than the sony. Even Sony admits XQD is more reliable than consumer grade SD which are flimsy. The backup options on the Z6 include the best use of Wi-Fi less than 1 second per full 14-bit raw files just end up on the remote computer or network automatically. I have been shooting the Z7 for a few weeks and never pulled the card, during or after events. All the files are just on the laptop or two as I am shooting. You did not list build quality as a criterion, both the Canon and Nikon excel here and the Z6 has D850 grade weather sealing, whereas the sony has none. Anyone who shoots outdoor or in dusty conditions will want to know that. There have already been manufacturers who say they are releasing a grip with Bluetooth controls. Nikon likely will have that also since it eliminates the added contacts between the battery grip that are the weak point on weather sealing. The could easily add inductive coupling for the power so no contacts are needed for a grip. The power supplies in the grips and camera are high frequency switch mode power supplies to generate the various voltages needed inside the camera so that high-frequency oscillation could be a very efficient inductive coupling between the bottom of the camera and the top of the grip, with no electrical contacts to corrode or require openings in the cases that would be a water and dirt access point.

Its wi-fi can send full 14 bit raw files in about 1 second over a much wider area so that is how backup for events, to 1 or multiple computers or an access point for remote backup to anywhere in the world. It is really slick. The only Snapbridge was a joke, never worked well but they completely redesigned it and the app so it is seamless, fast and bulletproof. Having all the raw files on an editing machine or a slide show in almost realtime is a major convenience improvement. I have not tried transferring video files however because I don't shoot videos in events. A cool thing about the XQD card is that it can be partitioned so raw stills going to one, jpg to another and video to a third.
