No need to hate on the tripod collar. F/4 and 70-200mm is great for landscape use, and it's way easier to mount/balance that camera/lens combo on a tripod with a collar in that use case. Focus clutch with real stops in manual mode is nice, too. Agreed the price is bonkers, though.
@federicosabbatanischiuma18365 жыл бұрын
I really like your videos.. but I don’t understand why you think that f4 lenses are not professional. There are a lot of professionals that don’t need f2.8 at all (like landscape photographers)... it doesn’t mean that who does not use 2.8 or wider lenses is not a pro
@JordanCS135 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Also, the tripod collar is very useful for tripod mounted work, as you'd expect....not everyone shoots portraits and events only.
@fotochips53005 жыл бұрын
Federico Sabbatani It is hard to title the lens with f2.8 if f4 already occupied that title
@orphanuprising4 жыл бұрын
I do mostly landscapes and I'd still prefer my lenses be capable of wider apertures, especially at that price. Its just a general rule, that the more you spend, the wider the aperture, because it costs more to manufacture a lens with more glass in it. Pumping up the price on an f4 just doesn't quite make sense.

The L mount ALLIANCE!!!!! Freaking love it. I remember the Raw Talk when they first said it and was laughing my ass off!!
@JohnDrummondPhoto5 жыл бұрын
Lots of pros use 70-200mm F/4 lenses, especially landscape photographers who rarely shoot at F/2.8 and don't want the extra weight. Canon's 70-200mm F/4L version is virtually as sharp as the F/2.8 at 60%.of the price. See: Thomas Heaton. P.S. That training area for the horse is called a paddock. New York City boy here, BTW.

Canon markets their 70-200 f4 as a "pro" L lens as well... Not sure why Jared hates L mount so much, they have grown a nice line up of great lenses... God forbid anyone use something different than Sony and Canon LOL

So about 1k more to get 2.8, seems about right actually. Lenses from all brands are getting more expensive due to shrinking market for digital cameras.
@xc680005 жыл бұрын
high iso plus great ibis is the 2.8 fetish really a thing still? I mean I get the depth of field argument, but on a zoom compression helps quite a bit. I'm more interested in build quality and image quality...contrast, sharpness at various focal lengths, flare, is the lens weather sealed? Really loving what I'm seeing in the S1 line and hope you continue to do reviews on it...looks like a phenomenal camera. I have a ton of great manual focus glass how about doing a review on how those might work with adapters?
5 жыл бұрын
A great looking lens from a build quality and design perspective, reminds me of lenses from the 70's in that respect. At $1697 it's expensive for the specification but the image quality looks excellent.
@chcomes5 жыл бұрын
I think that the "pro" moniker, apart of the obvious marketing thing, refers to quality in terms of sharpness, fringing, fast focus, etc etc, all that is not the aperture itself. I bought some non-pro EF glass and I was very disappointed, going back to use better quality glass of higher-number aperture.

I think the argument for the smaller lightweight mirrorless bodies is better served by the smaller F/4 lenses. They're lighter, smaller, and cheaper. Less penalty these days for cranking up the ISO and the bokeh difference is that big for me

Probably a dumb question, would it focus just as fast if I’m using a Leica body? So, I’m currently using a Leica 24-70 and I swear it will not focus in broad daylight. After rigging my Leica, I surely won’t have money for another lens but it’s on sale right now.

@MattisProbably5 жыл бұрын
I shoot my 70-200/2.8 (The Tamron G2) at f/4 basically at all times. At f/4 the sharpness is great, the bokeh is great and you still have enough depth of field to work with. So an f/4 lens does make a lot of sense if you want something lighter. That being said, being able to go to f/2.8 does save my buns pretty often. So if you don't mind the extra weight I'd always go with the f/2.8. I was thinking about getting a 70-200 f/4, like the Tamron 70-210/4, but going from my old f/2.8 to an f/4 seemed like a downgrade more than an upgrade so I went for the Big Kahuna. Didn't regret it.

Hi, your two reviews that I watched both portray the Lumix lenses as the only possible choices for the Lumix S series, but as of Aug 24, 2019 the sigma MC-21 converter was/is available and shipping from your sponsor (Adorama), and Sigma guarantees that its 70-200mm f2.8 will work with the mc-21 adapter. Would you have been tempted to do a comparison of the two lenses if you had thought of it? I bought the adapter to use another sigma lens to shoot concert videos ...

That AF/MF switch system is very neat with short lens like Oly 17mm because you can zone focus easily for street shooting. But I do not thing that anyone will be using this system with 70-200, most people will probably be angry because they bumped the focus ring accidentally.

Why do you think that a faster aperture automatically means better sharpness and faster focusing??? An f4 lens CAN be those things, just typically DSLR brands make their f4 the affordable option (and cut corners) making it slower to focus, less sharp and generally not weather sealed. That’s not the case with this lens, it’s bloody sharp, solid and weather sealed. But yeah you pay for it. By the way Lumix roadmap shows they’re also making a f2.8 version this year

Until Panasonic isn't delivering any UWA lens I won't dive into the system and yes I'd like to. Amateurs carry the industry. A huge chunk of L lenses, leicas, 2.8 zooms or 1.2 primes get bough by consumers who "need" that sort of stuff. Pro to me is dependability. The lens or camera won't break down or glitch or let in dust and so on. Pros are boring like that, they don't have time staring at sharpness charts like amateurs do.

Yo, Jared, you’re constantly ignoring the existence of landscape photographers. f/4 works for them cause they never shoot wide open AND it makes the lens smaller, lighter and easier to carry. That would also explain the collar, you know, cause you shoot landscapes without a tripod rarely, you know?
