Hi Jared, i can explain the fall off at the Edges. The Sigma is not perfectly planar corrected. That means the Focus area is not a plain but an orb. Objects that have the same Distance to the Camera are sharp. A plain surface like the table becomes soft at the Edges because the Distance to the Camera is longer an the area out of focus. This effect becomes weaker at the long end. So at 17mm with shallow depth of field you can get everything into focus by positioning it in a bow.

Apparently... the lens hood issue has been fixed by December 2018. I just bought (I feel like I stole) it for $285 new this month from B&H. On my D3300... that I seem to not feel the need to upgrade from... the colors and sharpness from the kit lens it replaces are noticed by even non photographers. This is a keeper for sure. I don't think I'll ever "upgrade" to full frame. For a crop sensor lens... it doesn't get much better than this. Very highly recommended for the enthusiast / hobby photographer. If I work with it a little bit, I (as a guy that use to shoot film and dabble in the darkroom) can get some fantastic shots of stuff no one else cares about. I won't get rid of it... even if I upgrade to the D7200 (now OOP) ... that is the plan. Happy shooting!

@kennygo83006 жыл бұрын
@@souvikbose3392 , yes it will fully autofocus. Be sure to read the instructions before you use it. When you put it on the camera, or before you start it up, make sure the stabilization and autofocus are turned off. Turn them on after you turn the camera on and it works great! Not a big deal once you get used to it.

No problem with the hood and autofocus issue at all on my copy. The zoom and focus rings work great. I took about 300 shots and i can say 95% of them are excellent. The minor issue is some purple fringing at the edges of the images if shooting at wide aperture (2.8) when reflecting against strong sunlight but it does not appear in low light. Highly recommended for the price and versatility of the lens. It's a quality lens, after all!

I have the the Nikon d7000 as well. Your review on the Sigma was great but it got me thinking. I'm in the market for a new walk around lens and one that I can use at hockey games for a little wider prospective.. How much better is the Nikon 17-55 F2.8 over this lens? Here the price difference between the two lens is about $400. Is there significant light fall off around the edges with the Nikon and is it sharper overall?

I have noticed that people (including Jared) are complaining about their lens hood not fitting tightly on the lens but I don't seem to have that problem. As with every lens hood I use, I always make sure I twist the hood until I feel or hear a firm lock properly. yes the lens hood of this sigma 17-50 doesn't just sit easily on the lens as most other lens hoods I have used do, but like I said, a full twist should lock it firmly following a 'click' sound. From what JAred describes, I think his copy might have issues

What could you tell me about 17-55? Do you recommend it?
@Lawful_Rebel7 жыл бұрын
Great honest review.. However, for the price of this lens and image quality it can produce, it's an easy 10. I appreciate the 24-70 is awesome on an FX camera (pointless and far too big on DX), it's also in another class and completely incomparable to the Sigma.. Moreover, the Sigma 17-50mm is a fantastic general purpose lens. It's relatively light (perfect for Travel etc) with superb IQ. A similar focal length lens from Nikon, the 17-55mm, is alot more expensive, relatively brittle and weighs a ton.. Great lens, but not for Travel [or every day] on a small DX camera.. In fact the Sigma is just compact enough, not to look ridiculous or feel impractical on a D7000.. Actually a additional battery grip would be a handy addition with this heavier lens if out for a long days shooting.

@2:34 The term "breathe" is for focus breathing which refers to the slight zooming effect you have when you change focus. The right term should be zoom "creeping" where the lens zooms in when it is faced down due to gravity :)

The equivalence thing means that the lens will provide the same field of view, not that the focal length changes. A 50mm lens on a DX sensor (or in DX crop mode on an FX sensor) will provide the same field of view in the finished image as using a 75mm lens on the full FX sensor -- you're essentially taking a crop out of the middle of the image, so you get a narrower field of view.
@CcAgan8313 жыл бұрын
I just called Sigma and spoke to the support guy. I brought up the issue with the hood and their reasoning was that with the 77mm filter size the hood was very large in diameter and was going to be difficult keep on when using black rapid straps because of the lens rubbing against your hip. My 2nd issue I brought up was the fact that the front element protrudes far enough forward that a shallow set filter will press against the front element creating a dark spot dead center.

This is probably a really NOOB question, but do these DSLR cameras store exposure settings in the "tags" of the digital file? Things like ISO, shutter speed, aperture setting....? I think I'll be getting the K-50 with kit lenses to start, but the $129 f1.8 50mm Pentax lens, as well as this lens, are on my wish list. I'll likely eventually upgrade to a K-3, and add a faster lens in the longer end of the zoom spectrum... I think the 50mm, this lens, and a "faster than kit" lens that goes out to 200-300mm, would be great compliments to the WR Pentax kit lenses. Any input on that would be great! Thanks so much for the videos.... keep shining bro...

right on, I'm loving the K-50 and it stores the data as "tags" on the file, not sure if that's the proper term.... I also can't remember if it stores that info for sure on the JPEG files, but the RAW files have the info for sure, you can right click and choose properties of any file and it shows the info.... seems that with the right lenses I'll even be able to know the focal length of the shot. SOOOOOO much to learn, but over 1700 images shot so far in a few weeks.... stoked!

Yes, your copy is probably bad. If you're at 70mm on your 17-50mm lens, you've turned your zoom ring much to forcefully, and a bit of a "wable" is to be expected. In fact, I'd be pleased as punch to turn my 17-50 into a 17-70 with only a focus ring "wable" as a side effect.

I bought this lens and I returned it, it is very sharp but the physical characteristics are annoying. The lack of manual focus over ride sucks, the zoom ring goes the opposite direction of all of my Nikon lenses, and overall it feels really cheap. Also, autofocus is loud, the focus ring physically moves (inconveniently placed where one would normally rest their hand on the lens) and it misses focus alot - especially in low light. even a cpl filter in broad daylight threw it off. I've never had that issue with any of my Nikon lens Save yourself the headache, save for another week and get a used copy of the Nikkor version. Seriously it's a million times better and more practically laid out.

The Nikon is not stabilized (a big deal for vloggers) and costs about 5x as much new. I just picked up a new one of these on eBay yesterday for $320. Yes, it has a few quirks, but it's a steal compared to the Nikon. Just make sure the retailer you buy it from has a decent return policy and like Mr. Bishop, send it back if it doesn't work for you. The borrowed one I used for awhile had very quiet autofocus.

Not sure about Tamron quality, but I ended up going with the Sigma 17-70 and having issues with softness (making it unusable at F2.8) front focusing and now a high pitched squealing noise. My 2 cents is to stay clear of Sigma.

Been wanting to upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. Just placed an order for the Sigma 17-50mm after this review. Will take my chances and hopefully I will get a good copy.

Hey Jared, thank you for this excellent review. I have almost zeroed in on the Sigma. However, I wanted to know your opinion regarding Sigma 18-35mm vs Sigma 17-50mm vs 17-70mm. I usually shoot handheld with primary interests being travel photography, landscape, family group photos and occasional portraits. Currently I own a Canon T2i with Canon EF-S 15-85mm + Canon 50mm lenses. I am also considering a telephoto lens, Canon 55-250 or Canon 70-200 f4 IS . Please share your inputs regarding these.. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks!

I just ordered this lens for my first camera... a D7000. It'll be my first lens outside the 18-105. Next... a 70-200 2.8 VR / OS. And then the switch to a full frame D810 (after it depreciates a lot..lol) That will take a while to save up for though. Wish they were cheaper. Thanks for the review. - a broke photographer

+AviatorGM that 17-50 is DX, so it will not work on fullframe

Thanks. Yeah, I kinda had that figured out. I wonder though, if the DX lens would work on the FX body in "DX/ Crop Mode?" I am going to be getting rid of my DX lenses when I switch over, but I wonder if it just might work... if I wanted to make it work while I start collecting the FX lenses.

How about its auto focus speed in low light?

I love this lens, I got it for 200 on eBay and it works great. I think it's a very sharp lens! Perfect on a d3300 for everyday use. If I have to choose just one lens I think I'd choose it over my other favorite pair of lenses the 35 and 50 1.8g

Hey jared love the video thank you. I am thinking of getting the sigma 17-50 2.8 for the Canon. I am a noob and starting out. I have the 70D. Also I am thinking of getting some nd filters nd8 nd64 nd1000 what's your thoughts on them as a start? I will only be paying about £70-100 for all three as not sure what I am really doing yet. Think the lens and nd will be a good start

Motters Motters Make sure you are turning off Af and OS when taking long exposures.

Guess I am the newest post. But I love this lens how portable and sharp it is for its price . I bought it 2 years ago and love it for landscapes and inside shots. Also my good is fine .

If you have to choose between a used in good shape Nikon 17-55mm F2.8G\AF-S DX IF-ED and the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC HSM. Which one I can find better image quality and be more sharp though the whole zoom range. Not for Video.

Can I use a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 on my Nikon Z6? It is possible to shoot on autofocus as well?

I just bought a 17-50 2.8 and the lens hood is super tight. Almost too tight! But, after a few weeks I'm sure it'll wear in to be perfect. Fun review J!
