@4look4rd its a full frame lens but no matter what lens you put on your d200 you still multiple it by 1.5 on all cropped sensor cameras on nikons end.

@sgav8r Im not upset just wanted to answer the question about being in Sigmas pocket. I have never picked up one of those lenses to use in my own personal bag. I own all Nikon glass for my FX Cameras. This is what I recommend, I recommend the nikon or canon glass if you can afford it or your a pro shooting on FX cameras. If you are just starting out and on a cropped sensor I fully recommend the third party lenses that are 2.8s or better for the savings. They have also gotten much better.

@andy5656 for the split seconds i do it its not a big deal. The issue is if your hanging it from your neck and using the lower end cameras you could possibly have an issue.

I love your long reviews Jared. It's like a mini documentary and it's great to see you cutting out the irrelevant testing and charts that feature in so many reviews by others on the net. When you have time, I'd really like to see you do an in depth review of Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 on a DX body.

@sgav8r thanks for your comment. First off I have answered this many times via e mail and in other places people have asked. I have never used the tamron because tamron has never sent me one. Also I would appreciate you not reading into things and creating assumptions like I am avoiding the question. It seems like your trying to say that because sigma sends me lenses to test out I cant say a bad word. They dont pay me or advertise on my site. They make plenty of lenses I would never use.

yes, it just crops. the focal length will be the equivalent of about 105-300 on an FX sensor. AF-S and everything will still work fine though.

Hi Jared, thanks for considering us users with a cropped sensor. It would be easy to stick with the "Top Shelf" gear that your most accustomed to. I have a Canon 70-200 F4L for my 50D which I will stick to, but I have to admit that the 2.8 aperture is tempting. Keep bringing the great reviews.

I use this lens on a Canon EOS 5D mk ii. I'm quite happy with it, as I enjoy the range and the f2.8 aperture, with its solid build and very good IQ. Of course the Canon L-Series will take you one significant step higher in terms of quality, but this Sigma is already very good. The HSM motor feels a little bit slow compared to a Canon USM. I've set AF microsetting to +2 on a scale that goes from -20 to +20, which means front-focus is minimal.

At 2:18 or so, I believe that was focus, look at the hair at the back of her head, it's in focus, and is sharp. Also, look at the old Tamron. It's very good. Yes, you use the cameras internal focus engine, but the image results are very good. Sharp, smooth, good colors :)

Hi Jared and all people ..i have canon 550D and in comparison to L versions from canon, this sigma is only litle bit behind ..definitely better than kit lenses and ultra zooms like 18-200 and crap. I am very happy with it ..i took some journalistic pictures and newspapers bougt them ..i was shooting birds on fly and the focus worked perfect smooth..definitelly happy that it was my first telephoto lens and it is still doing its job very well!!

I've watched this video 3 times. I had a 80-200 f2.8 AF-D, but sold it because i just picked up a used 70-200. The 80-200 was nice, build quality and optically, however, focusing was noisy and it would hunt heavily at times. For indoors, which i do a lot of, i wouldnt suggest, but outdoors it is amazing. The sigma looks nice, since it has HSM, and its quality is amazing. Stop looking at charts, and shoot. Sharpness isnt the only thing that matters sometimes.

@JaredPolin Hi Jared, Excellent work. I did want to mention that your going to have to revisit your stance on APS sized sensors. With the 24mp sensors coming from Sony (and to be in Nikon bodies soon) in the A77 and Nex7 the lenses that can provide enough resolving power do better than FF. I get less vignetting and higher edge to edge sharpness overall, and I'm in no hurry to pick up a full frame body out of my bag anymore!

@NO0Bstatus The cheaper one doesn't have stabilization, and it's a little bit soft when autofocusing in to 200mm. That shouldn't be a problem. Just zoom in, autofocus, and manually focus a bit more. The expensive one is a better lens, however it's not a completely noticeable difference. Good lens!

I gotta be honest, I think you convinced me. Very informative and covers most of the bases that I would be considering in my inner tumult. Right now it's not a lens that I particularly need while I'm on work travel in DC (few more months), but when I get back to Southern Cali and the national parks that it affords me, it will be the first lens I get. D7000, BTW, until I improve and the D3 gets an upgrade. At $800...heck, maybe I'll get it even before I go back.

I just bought this one and took some test pictures! I'm a bit shaky since i've never had such a heavy lens but I hope I will get some great pictures. I don't know about the macro though, I find it like it's not reaaaally macro. Just a lot of close up, macro for me is VERY close and you could really see the details in all the objects.

@denmyos You should work on holding technique. A lot of people like to press the viewfinder up against their eye to try to steady it some more, or hold the lens barrel differently. Sometimes it's a good idea to find something to lean on, too. It's improvisational, really.

Hi Jared, With all respect to you and your work but I am looking at the photos in your Flickr gallery and I don't see any sharp picture from this lens. Checking the shutter speed you used shows between 1/200 to 1/400 at ISO 5000 - 8000. I know the high ISO is going to give a softer picture but I don't see quality pictures from this lens. The firs time I saw this review I was very exited about the idea to buy it but now that I'm checking the "Original" files the results are not professional.

I am unclear about alout of blogs that say this lens front focuses or is just shy of "tack-on" focus. Are they talking about the first version or this version II? Is the IS version unnecessary, I have reasonably steady hands?

I'm just starting out in Photography, looking to really expand my hobby into a way to make a few bucks and also get access to some nice events and capture amazing images in the process. I started out with a Nikon D3300, upgraded to a 5500 with the 18-50mm kit lens. First lens purchased was a Nikon 50mm 1.8, second lens was a Rokinon 8mm Fisheye that I love to get versatile with and now I'm thinking about picking up this Sigma 70-200 2.8. Would you say I'm going in the right direction equipment wise for portrait, sports and concert photography?

For portraits or sports or events, an f2.8 lens like this is a better choice than an f4 or 5.6 even if those zoom to 300., especially on a crop dslr where 200 is already pretty long. Better performance in low light, and better out of focus backgrounds.

HI Jared, Ok, I know you touched upon the subject in the video, and others have left comments, but why exactly do you think the Sigma is a better buy than the nikon 80-700 afd? Obviously with it's HSM and the nikon being an af-d, the focussing speed will be much better with the sigma. Also the sigma has image stabilisation. But what about image quality? From what I've read, it seems that the 80-700 is sharper... Thanks
