@@mr.shutterz5348 yes. I use that recording mode all the time. It’s also the highest bit rate I’ve seen on a Sony alpha camera at 520 Mb. Interestingly, I can record for about an hour plus without overheating. So I assume Jared must have had the screen collapsed because he overheated at 20 minutes.

@@feederbrian9457 I was shocked when it overheated about 22 minutes in. I know it’s 8K but our Sonys usually don’t overheat. Screen wasn’t collapsed, it was open the entire time as you see in the BTS angle of the filming of the camera throughout the video. It’s also on a tripod head that’s very breathable. We always turn our hvac off when recording and it was a colder day out so it was only (roughly) 67-68 F degrees in the studio. We ended up blasting a fan on it and let it cool down and filmed the rest of the video about 15 minutes later

As far as record times, after doing this for quite some time, I’ve noticed that overheating limits/times are vastly different user to user, environment to environment, camera to camera, when it comes to Sony. There have been so many times we filmed for over an hour while the other reviewer barely got 30 minutes before overheating with same settings…

Jared you got the pre-shooting on Canon wrong. It's not half a second, it's based on your frame rate. It's 20/15 frames (R1/R5 Mark II) no matter what. So if you're shooting 40fps on R1 will be 0.5sec. but if you're shooting at 20fps it will be 1 full second and so on.

Got the A9iii in May...and still happy about that after this presentation. I also prefer speed to megapixels as I don't crop much. As for the price, I'm just happy for anyone upgrading that the price didn't go up. Preshot buffering is a gottahave for wildlife photography.

I agree. Megapixels just don’t matter. I have the R1 and I’m not sad about the megapixels. It can still be cropped with no issue. Autofocus and speed is what matter most to me though.

I don’t think this huge in leap in price compared to a Z8 is justified. Yes it may have a better AF (not as good it seems as the R5II) and a precapture in RAW, but still…no video RAW, no 8k 60, Overheating !! 😂… Sony segmentation is bad. Than could not lower the price because of the A7R5 and A7SIII, which are like…. Outdated cameras. Nikon went all in with the Z8, Canon has to follow with the R5II stacked sensor, but Sony won’t do much.

Nikon's AF is really not far off of this camera. It's telling that a LOT of people are using Z9's on wildlife specific forums over the A1 for the TC prime telephotos. If the autofocus was so inferior why on earth would that be the case? Reality is they both have pros/cons depending on the subject because subject recognition isn't perfect on either of them.

But I use a Z8 and the AF can failed even for wildlife, I had issues with lions in low contrast situation. So it is definitely not perfect. Look at the Olympics games, it’s telling a LOT also but not about the Z9, there was more A1/A9Iii and R1/R5 II.

Sony Landscape Togs will probably still go for the A7R5. Sony Sports shooters will probably still go for the A9iii. Sony video shooters might still go for A7Siii, the A9iii (for its global shutter), or one of the FX line. Sony wildlife Photographers are probably the ones who have the biggest dilemma - they was resolution for cropping, so A1 mk2, but also want the high speed of the A9iii, think they are the ones who it’s going to be difficult for.

I have a Z8 and while it would be nice to have RAW pre-capture, it's not like I can't just hold down the shutter for as long as I want and get the same effect. There's no shutter to wear out and the buffer is basically forever in HE compressed RAW. Culling isn't that big of a deal, just scroll through like you would a KZbin video and flag the shot you wanted, only import those after your done and format the card. There I just saved myself 3000 dollars. I'm assuming you can do the exact same thing on the A1 in a compressed RAW format and not run out the buffer.

@@Lofote "AI Chip" - I have an A7R V and that means absolutely nothing. The AF is inconsistent at best. The screen is nice but not worth 2k extra. Few pros use ethernet. There is zero reason to buy this if you already own the A1, and zero incentive to adopt Sony over Nikon or Canon. A flagship should be the standard bearer for the brand and this isn't it. No global shutter, no new sensor, same ISO handling. I'm a die-hard Sony fanboy but even I'm struggling with this.

I think many comparison posts are on the whole excellent, but also what must be factored in is the TCO (total cost of ownership).. Body comparison, lens comparison (look at how much extra canon charge for their lenses over the likes of sony and the weight differences when luging the gear around).. I'm still on Canon DSLR (5D MKIII) but in a quandary on changing to Sony or stay with Canon for mirrorless (especially if going to change to full native gear)....A few years ago priced up between the manufacturers, more so between Canon and Sony models and with a +£4000 saving switching to Sony (Body and lenses) was certainly a big draw for someone who is a hobbyist and the kit will be held for a long time

I have the A1 for quite a while. Was expecting it to have adjustable flicker mode to avoid banding. Which currently has but recently someone with a Canon showed me how the Canon auto adjusted to the lights while with the A1 I had to guess the setting.

For a flagship camera and with that price, it should have a 4” higher res OLED screen. Tri-CPU for fast processing and calculations. This should have been able to do 60MP @ 60fps, options for 45MP @ 90fps & 24MP @ 120fps. Also 8K @ 60p & 4K @ 240p Video to stand out. 30FPS shooting with Mechanical Shutter. Unlimited buffer, faster start time and the best AF.

Might be a good time to purchase a reduced in price A1 if you mostly shoot action stills, Im in the process of moving from Nikon (D5) to Sony and have recently purchased the original a9 with the 70-200 f2.8 GM-2 plus 135mm GM and to be honest its superb for what I mainly shoot (motocross) and the a9 is so cheap to buy now. I'm about to sell the rest of my Nikon gear and get another Sony body but still unsure what to get, might just get another a9 or a9ii.....

Also had a few occasions when needing a repair on my Nikon kit the wait for parts was crazy, 9 months for a focus blade for at the time a lens that was still a current model luckily I had a back up. For me it was time for a change and i'm really enjoying using the Sony gear, absolutely no regrets ....

Completely agree with your assessment. This camera is too expensive for what it offers when you compare its specs and value to the competition. Four years ago the price was the same, but it was revolutionary compared to where the industry was at the time so you could make the case for the cost being justified. This camera is purely iterative. When it comes to the A1II vs a9III, the a9iii is simply a more compelling camera in nearly every way due to the global shutter. It truly changes the way you can shoot. I was waiting for this announcement before deciding, but I'm going for an a9III.

Congrats Sony fans, seems like a really good camera. Not sure about color science...although Jared bakes his images. (just my opinion, don't come for me!) The AF for Sony and Canon are indeed top notch, which leaves Nikon to really deliver superior af to match. It will be a challenge for Nikon I'm sure but Nikon will need to dig deep. Still waiting for my new PRO APSC from Nikon!

Check out Gerald Undone’s review. After praising the good things, he goes nuclear on Sony. The comments by Sony shooters are brutal. A lot of very unhappy shooters in Sonyland.

As I understood it, it's compatible with the new 4.0 CF Express type A cards? That would double the speed we were used to with the A1.

It’s compatible as in it will accept the 4.0 card but just like the old days when people would buy uhs-II sd cards and put them in their uhs-1 camera, you’re going to be limited to the cfexpress 2.0 slot speeds. This camera does not have 4.0 slots like we stated in the video

Each time when we mention sony's 30 fps we say Canon R1 shoots 40 fps (24mpx), but no one remembers a9 iii 120 fps (24mpx).

i would've day 1 purchased the A93 if it had received a bump in resolution to 30 mpx. maybe i'll get it used in a few years. sony is hit and miss with those incremental updates. like honestly my a9m2 is not that much better than the mk1, i only got the mk2 because i totally used the mk1 to death.

The big question I have is what about original A1? Is it going to be discontinued? Or will its price drop to 4000$ range to compete with Z8 and R5II? There is a glaring hole in 4000$ high resolution stacked sensor camera option from Sony. If they would drop the original A1 to compete in that segment, it would in isolation be still the worst option (because of lack of precapture), but at least it would be some competition...

Jared, I’m watching your video of the camera focus montage and in the bottom center [ M.M. -0.7 ] and it changes 0.0 to +0.3 at times. Have you set the Manual Metering to -0.7 and the camera sometimes jumps up based on the lighting overexposure in Manual ISO?

Coming from a Canon 6D Mark II as a wildlife photographer, I was planning on getting the a1 but now I can confidently say I’ll get the a1 ii + 200-600mm. Unless someone can convince me to stick with canon with the R5ii. I’ve been eyeing Sony and think the switch will make sense for me. Is the price difference between the R5ii and the a1 ii worth it though?

The a1ii can back up two fast memory cards at the same time, while the r5ii only has one fast memory card. Although they both appear to be 30 raw per second, the sustained high speed of the r5ii is not as good as the a1ii, and the a1ii real time tracking seems to be easier to use than the r5ii.

The auto focus seeming to be easier to use is not correct. The r5 2 focus is better.

I would highly suggest testing the AF out before purchase. AF works well in bright light within a short distance even though I am shooting with G prime lenses. Low light or busy background completely disables it. If it wasn’t the investment into lenses, I’d be back to Canon (and still thinking hard on it). Wish I had tested the camera before purchase.
