Thanks, Jared. I'm an experienced Nikon shooter, but you've filled me in on things I've missed since picking one of these up. It just goes to reinforce that you should always read the manual and see tutorials for every new camera in case there are differences between the new models and the old one. Diving in and playing with the menus can be a good start, but it only gets you so far.

I've owned three cameras. One was a Yashica made in the 1970's, the second one was a Sears K1000 which was basically a newer version of that Yashica with the Sears brand stamped on it. My next camera was this one, the Nikon D3200. This was like upgrading from a rowboat to the star ship Enterprise. I've had it for two years and I'm still trying to figure out some things. The auto focus was hard to get used to. My favorite part is the 25 megapixels and I'm pretty happy with the kit lenses that some people have criticized. Last week I took a photograph of a postage stamp and printed it out poster size with little loss of image. This morning I photographed a roseate spoonbill mid flight and it came out so clear. Not only is the entire bird in the frame but I was able to crop down to the eyeball and have if fill an 8 x 10. My father had an old 35mm slr from the 1940's. His mother had an old Kodak camera she got in 1910 and her great grandfather built his camera from scratch after Daguerre taught him how in France. I have all of them. I have taken photos with all and seeing the evolution to the present is amazing. Each camera has become my new favorite and the D3200 was a quantum leap ahead compared to the old film cameras. I know there are some old school photographers out there that insist that film is the only way but I think they are idiots. The photos I take now are a million times better than what I used to take. The best part is the camera + lenses have been paid for many times over in all the film I'm not buying and more importantly am no longer paying to be developed.

Using this camera for about a year now it has rarely let me down. One of the best series that Nikon released for video if you had not known! Even though you can get great shots with the kit lens I purchased a fixed Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 that takes excellent stills on this rig and is a little bit easier to work with in low light. Awesome for the semi-pro or hobbyist photographer! Thanks for the review Jared, I copied your setup when I first obtained the camera and it has worked great!

I cannot stress enough, do not use the green auto mode, the ISO used here is horrible high most times and turns out noisy grainy pics. I took a couple in the evening with the flash on on auto mode, and when I checked the picture later it was so grainy and noisy, I then checked the picture file, right clicked on it and went to properties, then under the details tab you can scrool down and see the settings that was used, such as the numbers used for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. And when I saw the ISO that it had used I was shocked, ISO 3200 :o Why in the world would it use ISO 3200 for such a picture taken with the flash on, no wonder the photos turned out grainy and full of noise. If you are not comfortable shooting in full manual mode then at least shoot in program (P) mode, that gives you the option to set your ISO as you want, I have mine set to 100 and with the auto iso control turned on and set to max ISO 400, this way it will try to shoot at ISO 100 but if it need a little more light it can go a little higher, but only up to 400 :) Higher than that is to noisy for me, I know they say it is a matter of having the right exposure settings and then you should be able to go higher with the ISO without getting noise, but I just don't like it..
@deleteme7534
@deleteme7534 7 жыл бұрын
excellent comment! i've always thought my ISO was set at 100 because thats what it shows on the LCD. But when i checked the EXIF data, I was shocked at how high the number was. Then in the settings I discovered the Auto ISO Max ISO/Min Shutter Speed settings. Which still makes me wonder why the heck they let the display on the LCD say ISO 100, was really decieving so I'm glad I looked at the metadata! Anyways, I know this is an old comment but it was helpful for a struggling noob like me, so thank you!

The center weighted metering also looks at the whole scene, it "averages"it , but for the final reading, it will attribute more weight for the center area. In one of the auto modes will, of course, automatically compensate the variables to meet the camera 18% gray view of the world. In manual mode only shows how far the reading is far from this "gray tone world". A thing that works for me is almost only using matrix metering in one of the auto modes and pay attention where I put the focus point, because that, in the Nikon world, tells the camera to judge the whole scene but make it taking into account primarily the subject/area where I put that focus point. Almost like an auto spot metering. In Manual mode, I turn off Iso Auto, and use basically spot metering or center weighted depending on how "dynamic" the scene is. Coupled with the Zone system, perfect exposure all the time. So rewarding.

While I have not figured out how yet, it is my understanding that you can connect the D3200 to a laptop and then take photos and they photos are saved to a file on the laptop instead of the card in which case you would want that card lock button off so you can do that. It's only for when the camera isn't connected to a computer and there is no card that you would want to lock it. In fact I am planning to figure this out for videos so I can save video files directly to a flash card connected to my laptop. At least that is what I am going to try doing. This is very convenient in some studio situations so you can see the image on a larger screen instead of a view finder. A friend of mine has another model he does this with and views all images on a 30" monitor which functions as an external view finder.

Finally got my hands on this camera after years of using point and shoots. I was overwhelmed and started my google search and there, your "fro" popped up 🤣 I have watched this video several times already and feel excited about taking pics. Can't wait to play and expand my knowledge through your expertise. You're awesome! And greatly appreciated man.

This was so helpful in helping me to understand my new camera. I have read through my manual but can barely make heads or tells. Now having it explained with a hands on person giving me visuals at the same time I have more confeidence in going forward with my photography experiences. Thank you so much Jared.

Thank you so much for making this video. I picked up this camera as a coping skill to help deal with my PTSD and I admit I was a little intimidated by the camera when I first purchased it. This video you have made on this camera is clear and concise and made using this camera a quite a bit easier for me. Thanks for the explanations and suggestions, they were very much appreciated.Thank you.
