Let me start of this review by reminding you that the NIkon D3200 is a basic beginner camera. I did not set out to compare the files to this camera or that camera. I simply wanted to use the camera for what it is and review it based on it being a very basic beginner model.
With that out of the way I think this is a no questions asked hands down perfect beginner camera for anyone looking to get their first DSLR. The price is not bad at all for what the camera offers you. A new 24 megapixel sensor, fast auto focus, solid HD video and a microphone input. These are qualities that you will find in higher end cameras and this is a sign of where basic cameras are going.
I used this camera locally in Philly, on the beach in Florida and at the BEAN and Wrigley Field in Chicago. I just used the camera, that is what its all about, getting out there and shooting and not over analyzing every single aspect of what a camera does or does not do.
Overal I think this is a SOLID SOLID camera in terms of price and quality. If I needed a third camera angle to capture video when I am recording I would have no problem picking up one of these bad boys.
Who is the Nikon D3200 for? This camera is for anyone from a stay at home mom or dad to someone who has always wanted to get into taking pictures. It is a great starting point and I fully recommend not over thinking the decision when it comes to your first camera and pick one. One recommendation that I always remind beginners about is the importance of buying good lenses. The Kit lens that the camera comes with is fine for snap shots but if your looking to get more out of your camera take a look at the Nikon 35mm 1.8. You may not understand right now the importance of better glass but over time you will see that lenses are more important than cameras.
If you think this camera is for you and you are looking to pick one up please support our friends at AllensCamera.com 215.547.2841. They have supported what I have been doing since day one no questions asked!!!

I just got this camera in a value pack from HSN for $600. Pack included 2 lenses, nikon camera bag, class10 SD card, and the wifi dongle. I was so relieved to see how honest this review was and it really just reaffirmed how good I felt about such a big purchase. Definitely considering getting the 35mm lens to pair with it.

Have used the Nikon D3200 for 4 years now. It has been an excellent camera to learn on. It is as tough as nails, yet delicate enough for quality pictures. With the D3200 you can challenge your creativity using ISO, aperture, and shutter settings.

This camera together with the Tokina 12-24mm f4, the 35mm f1.8, the 55-200mm or 55-300mm and you are golden in terms of lenses. The Tokina is especially awesome, very fun lens! Add a flash, a cheap IR remote, one or two fast SD cards, a good bag, a tripod and maybe a proper camera strap and you have everything you are ever gonna need. I bought all this stuff while I was learning how to take photos and this way it was actually pretty affordable as well! Ya know, learning by doing.

Also with the D3200 you are getting the latest sensor process technologies, as well as a more customer friendly interface...with more in-camera features that allow you to apply specific effects. The higher camera's have this, but more experienced photographers are less likely to use them, thus there's not as much care put in to it as there would be consumers... Just something to consider. I'm personally very impressed with 3200 and 5200 for beginners.

I like the way you said - "Make a choice, select the camera and be happy with it". A lot of us DSLR newbies get ourselves confused about which camera to purchase first and figuring out the specs of various different models will only confuse us more. That being said, it's all about the lenses in the end. Cheers and thanks for making such informative videos!

I have to say, I have used the D3200 for four months in the Olympic National Forest shooting landscapes and wildlife and I have had great results from this camera. It has held up through cold weather and mist. I did take care to keep it as protected from Washington rain possible but it still would get a little wet from time to time. The images are crisp and sharp. There were some issues in low light but overall I love this camera. Now I am upgrading to a D7100.

New to discovering my love for taking photos. I am currently focusing on taking photos of local plays/performances. I mainly work with a local improv troupe and a band which means a lot of low light and action shots and I've been using my Galaxy Nexus phone as my camera. I think it's time to upgrade and I am so glad I found this video. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I found it VERY helpful. I will definitely be watching the users guide when I pick this camera up soon.

I just got a refurbished D5100 and a 35mm prime lens last week (which was Jared's lens rec a year ago) and it is great with the 14-bit color. The colors and the screen tipped my choice in its favor, but the D3200 is lighter, has newer features and captures more detail with the megapixels.

Totally true. I've first hand looked at the D3200 and it's phenomenal for the price point. The extra pixels give you room to crop your compositions if needs be. Just a shame about that back LCD panel makes manual focus during video recording a touch awkward.

Hey, I do own a Nikon D3200 and its great. He asked which BODY is better, D3200 or D5200, and D5200 is a little more advanced in certain aspects, that difference does not worth it right now in terms of money.

I bought this camera used in 2021 (along with the 18-55mm kit lens) to get back into DSLR photography. This camera may be 10 years old now, but it’s a real workhorse. Sometimes I take it along with my Z50 along with a couple of F-mount lenses and the FTZ or just the D3200 in all of it’s versatile glory. Not gonna part with this body any time soon. You can find this camera on sites like KEH or eBay at a really affordable price, along with affordable Nikkor or aftermarket glass.

Jared, You can change the settings in LR4 so that it renders all the 1:1 zooms beforehand so that when you are editing photos, you don't have to sit there and wait for it to load your image. It renders everything when you start up lightroom so you still have to wait then, just not in the middle of editing.

I did! Both and none at the same time! Nikon D3200 looks to be better for shooting photos, the noise looks more acceptable, but Canon has better features for video recording. If you dont mind very much for video go on Nikon. If you do, go on Canon. They are both great cameras and actually gives you almost the same results. In the end you really cant figure out much difference. It depend on how much you want to invest you money.

I think yes. I attend a media university and we use professional cameras there. But I am looking for a DSLR to record some of my own movies (and pictures). It is really handy you can hook up an external microphone. You will going to have to do that eventually if your videos become more professional. Hope this helped a bit.

Nice review, Jared. Clear and pragmatic. I think 24MP is nice but not compelling. The D3100 remains available and is cheaper, and its 14.2 MP is enough. Probably the most compelling reason to get the D3200 is increased versatility due to the external microphone input (only way to get good video audio). Pity it doesn't have a tilting screen.

I'm a bit of a newbie at this too but i got advice from a professional photographer who i'm friends with and he said he started on the 3200 and he said you can get any body, it's the lenses you choose that capture the image quality and picture that you want, look on amazon or on nikon's online site and see which lens gives the type of picture you want.

Very solid information. I just believe the SD card he recommended was decent, why not go for class 10, and look for anything above 60MB with 32GB of storage or higher. They are fairly inexpensive and and we could always use the additional storage. *Then again he did record this in 2012 which the prices and information may have been much more different from now. D3200 gives you more for just a little more money, price/performance ratio is just way higher on the D3200, because you learn a lot when using a dSLR and the D3200 is just so advanced and easy to use at the same time, it's packed full of features you wanna have as a total beginner as wel as a more experienced shooter. Nikon D3200, I'd tap that!

Costco deal. I went that route. If you add up all the extras individually, it exceeds the price tag they're asking. The only thing I am finding though, is that you will rarely ever need the 55-200mm lens, which retails for around $250. I'm actually trying to sell mine... while making a little profit.

I've got a D3200, i've had it for some time, its easy to use, It's better to get a cheap body (but still is a good camera) because you will be spending the most money on the glass, save up for a D3200 and a bit more to purchase a high quality lens, like the Nikkor 50mm lens I purchased one for £40. Also, if you want to take photos stick with the kit lens that comes with D3200 but if your a filmer I recommend prime lenses. Hope this helps, I dont mind answering more questions if you have them.
