The thing is Frollo didn’t love or have feelings for Esmeralda, he was just lusting immensely for her and blaming it on her “witchcraft” (classic patriarchy) because he views himself as a pure and holy man who wouldn’t sin, the hooded figures in “hellfire” are saying “mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” which is a praying for when you ask for forgiveness of sin, it means in latin “through my fault, through my most grievous fault”, he refuses to accept that he’s corrupt and sinful and the hooded figures around him are his obsession with trying to justify it and being holy accusing him of sinning, his own lunacy and madness (that is seen again during his death scene when he sees the devil roaring at him as he falls to his death, bringing him to hell) Frollo is definitely one of my favorite villains Hellfire plays right after Heaven’s Light to contrast the different effect Esmeralda had on Quasimodo and Frollo Frollo looks tired the next day because it’s implied that he spent the last night... Well... Having some impure thoughts I also love Esmeralda’s God Help the Outcasts because she “isn’t supposed to be praying because she’s a gipsy” but she’s the most selfless of all the people praying there, while all the Christians at the church are praying for material and personal gain, all she asks for is help to all of the people who are also oppressed and doing even worse than her She is shown walking in the opposite direction of the other praying people to simbolize that contrast Also, the parts that make me cry the most are : “Yes I know I'm just an outcast I shouldn't speak to you Still I see your face and wonder Were you once an outcast too?” (Esmeralda, you have no idea...) “God help the outcasts Or nobody will” And also : “I thought we all were the Children of God” Esmeralda is incredible and should honestly be a Disney Princess because she’s an amazing model for young girls

I know you wanted Quasimodo to let Frollo fall at the end. But remember the beginning of the movie. Frollo almost killed him the exact same way, letting him fall into the well as a baby. This scene shows the difference between them. Frollo, who thought himself a pure good man, WANTED to let an innocent child fall into his death, but he was stopped. Quasimodo, who believed his whole life that he was a monster, had the chance to let Frollo fall, the very man who killed his mother and countless others. Basically his life depended on it. And still, he decided not to. This scene is the strongest answer to the question at the beginning: "Who is the monster and who is the man?"

The original story is even better and they made it more faithful in the Disney stage musical. It’s more tragic though so I think they decided to tame it a little for this movie. It didn’t spoil things at all though. This is one of my top Disney films.

Honestly I didn’t care for the Victor Hugo novel that much and I found it kinda boring. Esmeralda and Quasimodo aren’t that likeable in the book and American stage show so when they died I wasn’t sad whatsoever. I also think Frollo in the book and stage show is the show was kinda lame and I’m sick of sympathetic villains in general. Frollo in the movie did believe what he did was right but that doesn’t mean you have to make him sympathetic. Frollo is just the wrong Disney villain to make sympathetic. Scar from The Lion King has more potential to work as a sympathetic villain than Frollo does. I also think Frollo works better as a judge/corrupt politician rather because they have power. Priests have no power whatsoever. While I like Patrick Page’s performance but I didn’t like the portrayal. Disney made a Berlin stage musical that ran from 1999-2002 and I think it’s better than the movie, show and Hugo novel combined. Esmeralda does die in the this version but given that she’s more likable in this version her death is far more impactful. They did keep the Gargoyles, but they toned their humor and made them imaginary. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGblIBshreed5Y

Yikes. Esmeralda was only a teenager while Frollo was in his 50s? That is pure pedophilia right there.
@shroom68873 жыл бұрын
Yupp, it was really disturbing. They threw Esmeralda in jail, tortured her, Frollo almost assaulted her. Also she was forced to admit that she was a witch, otherwise her feet would've been crushed with rocks. All in all, the book was dark as hell, but I still enjoyed reading it, and I'm glad that the movie had a happier ending. I would suggest giving it a read tho, it's really good despite the disturbing parts.

FINALLY!!! I’m so HAPPY!! BTW what Frollo felt was not love. It was lust. Love is when you genuinely care about someone, while lust is just being selfish carnally.

11:15 omg now that you mentioned it, i wonder why the priest never told quasimodo that frollo killed his mom?? Like he did saw the whole thing! 🤔 Also 11:30 holy crap, Hellfire is such an intense disney villain song! It always gives me chills! Like the music in this movie always gives me chills but with Frollo's song, it gives me chills but in a scared way. Frollo is literally the most brutal and realistic disney villain ever 😨
@persephonene74213 жыл бұрын
It was the priest's whole idea for Frollo to care for Quasi to make up for killing her. So telling Quasimodo would ruin that.

The Hell Fire song gives me chills every damn time. That is some seriously dark and powerful imagery going on there. Victim blaming, lust, power, it's dark stuff. This movie has some of the most gorgeous animation too. Incredible songs, great humor... a very underrated film.

2 facts about these characters: Ezmeralda is 16 years old and Frollo is around 50 years old. Also in the original book, She was afraid of Quasimodo for the way he looked and yet he loved her still. Frollo managed to kill her and years later when someone dig up her grave, he noticed another skeletton hugging her. That was Quasimodo. He could not handle life without her, so he crawled inside her grave and hugged her until he died.
@persephonene74213 жыл бұрын
She's 16 in the book. There's no way this movie one is 16 and hooking up w 30-something yr old lookin Phoebus. I think she looks early 20s but thats just me. Also, book Frollo was only 36 but had premature aging gray look.

At minute 11:20 or just after, you wonder why the priest has not told Quasimodo about his Mom - its pretty simple, pretty sure the Priest has no idea that Frolo lied to Quasimodo.

The stage production of this musical is phenomenal! The added songs are great and they made it better in so many ways (Believe it or not) though, the ending is much darker. But I think the more grounded and realistic take makes up for it. And they removed the annoying gargoyles, and made them the narrator through song instead. I cried the whole show through 😅 Mostly because the choir and music in general was that good! 🙏😍 But this one is also really good, I just personally prefer the stage production.
@MovieEnforcer Жыл бұрын
Honestly I found the American stage production to be overrated. Mainly because I didn’t like the Victor Hugo novel all that much. Esmeralda and Quasimodo weren’t that likable in the book or the American stage production so when they died I wasn’t sad not in the slightest and the chorus got on my nerves and I hated how they narrated every single thing. Disney did stage show in Berlin back in the late 1990s/early 2000s and I think is even better than the movie. This is one is a bit closer to the movie but does borrow elements from the Victor Hugo novel and is much darker in tone. Esmeralda’s death is handled so much better this than it was in the novel. I actually cried this time because she was a likable character just like she was in the movie. Given that she’s not the likable the American stage musical I just didn’t care that she died. They did keep the Gargoyles from the movie but they’re imaginary and they don’t have the over the top personality like the do in the movie. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGblIBshreed5Y

I guess it's under who should be revealing the truth to Quazi. Most would say it's the caretaker's responsibility to reveal the child's past to them. I'm sure he had asked and Quazi said he knew, he prob just wasnt aware that it wasnt the truth.

This is my all time favourite Disney film! It's stunning and moving in so many ways. The irony is, when I was growing up, I owned this on VHS (and still do today), and loathed this film. I thought it was boring, but over time as went on to rewatch it as teenager, i became to admire everything that really makes this film, as one of the best of the Renascence of Disney Animation. Or for me, its the best animated movie from the Hose of mouse

I love how everytime everyone mistakes "Hellfire" as Frollo falling in love with Esmeralda. Why would it go from him saying he's in love to then saying he has sinned and will be punished for it? There's only one explanation: it's not love, it's lust!

One of Disney's darkest animated films since The Black Cauldron of 1985. They tie in terms of not just their dark nature, but with so many adult themes and situations. It still surprises me that Hunchback managed to still catch a G rating versus the PG rating The Black Cauldron got. And Disney at the time feared that's what cost them as analysts believed it lost their target audience which were young kids (i.e. a PG-rated animated film doesn't sell).

Fun fact Frollo was a lot less villainous in the novel this film was based on he genuinely cared for Quasimodo and willingly took him in after his mother abandoned him and only becomes the villain halfway through after he starts lusting for Esmeralda
@MovieEnforcer Жыл бұрын
That’s what makes him kinda of lame in the book. Yeah I wasn’t a big fan of the book and I found it kinda boring. Quasimodo and Esmeralda aren’t that likable in the book so when they died I didn’t feel sad whatsoever. I also think Frollo is much scarier as a judge because he has more power. In the book given that he was a priest he has no power and is a less credible threat.

One of my favourites! I didn't appreciate the dark tone of this movie until I was older. Tony Jay's performance is just legendary! Also, just for the benefit of this comment section (since I haven't seen it mentioned yet), the term for Esmerelda and her people, "g****", has been categorized as a racist slur in recent years. (It probably HAS been a slur since before this movie, but wasn't largely known until recently!) The accepted alternative is Romani! Always love your reactions! So so glad you get to experience these movies for the first time, and that you're sharing these experiences with us! Can't wait for the next one!
