Although, keep in mind, we were getting a little tired of the straw-man sniffy-fey Gov. Ratcliffe "I hate good people!" villains in increasingly corny and melodramatic post-Lion King 90's movies, and bad-Frollo-good-Gypsies may have finally pushed it over the edge. When audiences suddenly and inexplicably raged at '97's "Hercules" the next year, and tried to ride it out of town on a rail, what we may have seen was a delayed reaction. (Yes. They actually hated Hades.)

Hellfire is probably the most shocking song they ever had in any of their animated movies. I mean it's litteraly an old man lusting for a young woman and saying that he want her dead and burning in hell if she dare to reject him. They wouldn't do anything like this nowadays that's for sure.

I know the ending pissed a lot of people off but I think it was the only responsible way to end it. Frollo saw Esmeralda as a demon, Quasi saw her as an angel, and Pheobus saw her has a woman. If there absolutely had to be a romantic angle, Pheobus made sense.
@imaran1303
@imaran1303 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, Quasimodo and Frollo both put Esmeralda on a pedestal. One sees her as a pure angel, coming down from heaven. And even then, his motivations for liking her were flimsy too, it is believable, but a real relationship does not grow out of something like that. Quasi even sings it in his own song, she is beautiful yes, but what made him love her is simply the reason that she was the only woman to ever show kindness to him. It is a beautiful pedestal to stand on... but it still dehumanizes you in a way, turning you into a saint when you are just like him, a flawed human. Frollo also put Esmeralda on a pedestal, a demon, a sinful woman who only he could purify, a witch who he needs to bring on the right path... or kill to prevent her from leading other men astray as she has done with him. Frollo was worse, but both did wrong. Esmeralda was neither a angel nor a witch. She is not responsible for Quasimodo falling for her simply because she treated him like a human being. Nor is she responsible for giving Frollo a boner and him not knowing how to handle this complex emotion that the church branded as evil called 'Lust'. Pheobus was the only one who treated Esmeralda like a woman. He lusted after her, sure. But he never blamed her for his own lust and never expected a relationship out of her. Pheobus sits in the healthy center of the both extremes that are Quasimodo and Frollo.
@imaran1303

@Dark Shadow Storm And in the book, Frollo was a Archdeacon not a Judge, we aren't comparing book to movie, it was obvious that Disney wasn't going to translate the book 1 to 1. They didn't do it with Hercules, they didn't with Pocahontas, expecting a different outcome here was stupid.
@imaran1303
@imaran1303 3 жыл бұрын
@Dark Shadow Storm They could have, but they didn't. They instead chose to give Phoebus that role and made him a better guy to fit the mold. And also made a pretty decent message that worshipping a person is not guaranteed to give you their affection. A message that quite a few people could learn from.
@imaran1303
@imaran1303 3 жыл бұрын
@Dark Shadow Storm But it still puts her on a pedestal, which is a wrong thing to do. One can make many arguments, maybe that it really wasn't love what motivated him, just gratitude, which he conflates with love because he never was treated like this, like a human being, even by the person he considered his 'father'. One can argue that he DID love her because he was willing to set aside his own emotions to know he lost and wish the best to her and Pheobus. And maybe in the books Pheobus was similar to Frollo, but definitely not in the movie. Pheobus was attracted by her beauty, yes. But he respected her. He did not think her wicked or anything like that, nor did he force himself on her, he simply tried to help her. So, unless you meant that the book Pheobus was close to Frollo, claiming that Pheobus was similar to Frollo is objectively wrong.

Hercules was nominated for Best Song with "Go the Distance," but not for Best Score, and didn't win. Now there's the rule that only one song per movie can be nominated; I guess the Academy was sick and tired of Disney winning best score and song Oscars for so long. The original story is even darker. Disney lightened ip up a lot. In the book, Follo has Esmeralda hanged for a crime he committed and laughs while she dies. Quasimodo sees him laugh and throws him off the cathedral roof. Later he goes to Esmeralda's tomb and lays beside her until he starves to death. 18 months later, someone opens the tomb and finds them both, laying together. When they try to take them apart, they crumble to pieces.

The novel is so far from this version of the movie I don’t see how it matters. *Everyone* dies. Esmeralda, Quasimodo, a poet character who’s an author self-insert, Esmeralda’s surprise mom, Clopin. Frollo. Phoebus lives, but he’s actually a womanizing Gaston type who never even actually cared for her and abandoned her for another woman once she was trapped at the cathedral. The theme isn’t even about fighting oppression, it’s literally that human lives and efforts are futile and short, and that we should just take care to preserve the great monuments that last, like the Notre Dame. (Victor Hugo mostly wrote his book to save the Notre Dame from being torn down back then.) Point is, this book is a completely different story with totally different themes and morals. It isn’t as relevant as people seem to think.

@@evaflorentia3998 No, you’re right, I do absolutely believe that the book is relevant to the history of the franchise and how its later versions developed since then. I just don’t like how so many people seem to think that since the book ended one way, then the “true story” of the movie has everyone die and fail. It’s like, no, you don’t need to make yourselves miserable. The book’s a totally different story! The _movie’s_ “real story” is just what happened on screen! If you choose to ditch the happy ending, then you’ll have to ditch everything about the rebellion against oppression and fighting for social justice too, because that wasn’t really a theme of the original book either, but no one seems to say that that’s fake. That’s all. I just like reminding people, one may be based off the other, but for all intents and purposes, they’re different stories. Not just the same thing. There’s a difference, you know?

@@starlalikesbroadway3268 Yeah there is a sequel and no, don't watch it, the music sucks, the villain sucks, the animation is way less good than the original, definitely one of the lower tier Disney sequel cartoon movies out there. I didn't like Quasimodo not getting Esmerelda as a child but as an adult I now love it. It's a powerful message that you don't need to get the girl and still you can be fulfilled in life. Besides it's other fails the Hunchback sequel give Quasimodo a girl to win, I liked that as a kid, but now I don't and everything else surrounding that main theme also being bad, it wasn't good. The animation has many more references to the Bible. Quasimodo breaking free of his chains is a tribute to Samson who did something similar. Esmeralda's costume, on the other hand, is red and purple during the performance, wearing Wh*re of Babylon from the Apocalypse in purple and scarlet (probably that's why Frollo saw Satan in her).

I am so happy so many more people are reacting to this underrated masterpiece. The book is darker but this is my favourite Disney movie now when I am older and understand more about the world and how well for example Frollo is such a realistic character. I loved your reaction and I began to cry when I saw tears in your eyes! You are just such a pure person! I love how the movie ended with Quasimodo getting the acceptance from the people of Paris that meant more to him then any romantic love and that he got Esmeralda and Phoebus as friends for life now. My shot analysis on the three mens ''love'' for Esmeralda in the Disney movie! Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda were pure and he saw her as an angel but in the end he let her go since as you said the friendship meant more. Frollo's obession for her turned him mad and he was very sexually repressed and used the power he had to try to own her and he saw her as a temptress and an object he needed to posses. Phoebus loved her for who she was and that is why he was the one to end up with her, he fell inlove with her as a real person and she in turn fell inlove with him!

This is Disney's darkest movie, but it's a glittery candy-fest compared to the original novel. Victor Hugo was a very dark man. He was obsessed with killing off everyone in sight in his novels. George R.R. Martin probably takes notes from him. Also, one of my favorite things about this movie is that Esmerelda and Quasimodo aren't love interests. She loves him, but as her best friend, not as a lover, like she loves Phoebus. And Quasi never tries to convince her to be with him, never guilts her into being with him because she's nice to him or anything, and he eventually moves on from her and decides to just be happy as her best friend.

(This information about Hellfire isn't mine): First of all, Frollo doesn't speak or sing to God, or Christ, but to Virgin Mary. Why? Because, in the first scene that Clopin sings about, when the archdeacon points out the statues, Frollo focuses above all in Virgin Mary. Then, a thunder resonantes, and for a very short time (and almost invisible), Virgin Mary opens his eyes and stares at him like saying "You've done a bad thing". Secondlu, the dark blue colour simbolizes good, and Heaven. The red colour, Hell. That is why you see a big Cross above the chimney, but the fire's red light doesn't reach it, it's dark blue. Also, Frollo wants to be "pious" as those cardinals dressed in red, who are judging him. But, as his actions aren't pious, in the end, when he positions himself against the wall, forming a very little cross ( which is very little compared to the shadows of the good cardinals and Saints that ascend to the blue side ) he stays in the red side. The scene when the soldier appears to tell Frollo that Esmeralda is gone. That solider is surrounded by dark blue colour. He's an angel who comes to give him an ultimatum: "leave her and come with me, or continue and you're doomed.
@evenmoor
@evenmoor 3 жыл бұрын
Frollo also addresses Mary specifically because of the association with the cathedral - Notre Dame, which means "Our Lady" (i.e., Mary). In the prologue, the Archdeacon tells Frollo, "But you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes, the very eyes of Notre Dame," visually indicating the cathedral but clearly referencing the *actual* Notre Dame, Mary. Hellfire also features the chorus singing the Confiteor, which a confession of sins that serves as a direct counterpoint to Frollo's denial of guilt for his lustful feelings. Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti - I confess to Almighty God Beatae Mariae semper virgini - to the Blessed Mary ever-virgin Beatae Michaeli archangelo - to Blessed Michael the Archangel Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis - to the holy apostles, all the saints Et tibi pater - and to you, Father Quia peccavi nimis - that I have sinned Cogitatione - in thought Verbo et opere - in word and in deed Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa - through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault Kyrie eleison - Lord, have mercy When it comes to forgiveness, however, there must be more than merely a confession of sins but true repentance. If you make no effort to amend your ways, you're a hypocrite, which is one of Frollo's issues here ("And he saw corruption everywhere / Except within"). Frollo cements his sin with the lines: "God have mercy on her / God have mercy on me / But she will be mine or / She will burn" showing he is clearly aware that he is the one at fault here, but he chooses to go forward with his evil acts anyway.

Frankly, I really miss this style of animated storytelling that wasn't afraid to lean waaay more heavily into serious tones and emotion. Most Disney renaissance movies did this well, in addition to many of their older classics, plus Don Bluth movies like Secret of NIMH and Land Before Time and Dreamworks' early stuff like Prince of Egypt. As a kid, feeling more genuine fear and sadness in these films felt cathartic, and even necessary. Maybe because the joy in the happy ending felt all the more earned.

I'll never stop watching these masterpieces just because they're not as popular or deemed for children. Hellfire is definitely one of the darker moments of any animated Disney movie I can think of but it's so good. It's kind of surprising the song even made it into the final cut of the movie but I'm so glad it did.

I think you came to an important realization that many people seem to miss: that Esmeralda's happiness is important to Quasimodo. Maybe because you really seemed to really get Quasi, his personality and what was important to him, even at the first watch.

30:58 That's molten lead used to repair the bells. The reason it doesn't destroy everything is that lead has a low melting point, so it isn't actually as hot as it looks. Though you _would_ get horribly injured if it hit you. The reason that happens is pretty simple. Gargoyles are basically just fancy rainspouts, the lead goes into the water lines and then falls out of the statue's mouth. They were made like that to look good and fit with the styles of the buldings, and because they were believed to scare off evil spirits.

Frollo is my favourite Disney villain of all time, with my favourite song of all time, and Tony Jay just brings the sheer evil in him to life. It's all so insane and mad, but you buy every second of his performance. He convinces you Frollo actually believes what he's saying

I could go on for hours about this movie, it is so visceral. There's just so much symbolism. I'm so glad you're happy with the ending! One of the things I see people complain about is the fact that Quasi doesn't end up with Esmeralda in the end, and they just stay friends. But I honestly think that's part of the point, and part of why the story is so great?? Esmeralda cares for Quasi but she's not interested in him like that, and by the end of the movie Quasi understands and accepts that and cherishes her friendship, the complete opposite of Frollo, who tried to kill her when he realized he couldn't have her. That and even though Quasi and Esmeralda didn't end up together, he still got everything he ever really wanted in the end; a life free of the bell tower, and the acceptance of the people

I can't believe you were never going to originally watch animated movies because your reactions weren't of the norm as you said compared to other reactors. Because you are more focused on the characters and get so wrapped up in their emotional story you don't make jokes or sarcastic funny comments. That's so weird because that is actually why I started watching your reactions because you don't makes tons of jokes but instead are actually taken away by the characters and their journey. Because your reactions are so genuine, honest, and emotionally raw is why I started watching your reactions in particular to begin with. I actually was going to comment about this in your Treasure Planet reaction but thought it would be mean to other reactors who do this. So I didn't say anything about it. Man. The one thing you were afraid of doing because it wasn't conventual was the one reason why I started watching you to begin with. I love reactors who makes funny jokes and all...but after a while it feels tiring. I just want a reactor to care about the characters that I love and enjoy so much. I want a reactor to be actually happy, sad, and scared for the characters without it being fake or just for show for the audience. YOU have actually done this. Your smile is wonderful cause it's real. You pay attention and it shows how invested you are with the story and this shows you actually care about what you are watching. It makes me care about watching your reactions and I end up enjoying watching you react to the story your reacting to. I'm glad you decided to watch animated films. It's really refreshing to see a reactor show real and raw emotion without holding anything back.

I always liked the detail in the lunch scene of Quasimodo putting out a fancy silver goblet and plate set for Frollo but a wooden set for himself. You know Frollo brought him those to keep in the tower, but instead of bringing two matching sets, he deliberately gave Quasimodo something inferior to use as a subtle, everyday reminder that Quasimodo is a lesser being. It's so insidious.

I swear to you, my friend, I was delighted by your reaction. This is one of Disney's toughest movies, although it is also true that it comes from a very heavy source material. And of course, Frollo is one of the most despicable villains ever put to screen, the interesting thing about the film is how it poses the dilemma of what makes you a man and what makes you a monster. And now, if you stop to think about the issues it deals with ... genocide, lust, racism, intolerance ... Not your typical children's movie! Still, it is a true masterpiece.

Fun fact in the novel this movie is based on Frollo was a lot less villainous than he was here he genuinely cared for Quasimodo (also naming him after a day and not his deformity) and willingly took him in after his mother abandoned him (and making him stay in the bell tower was actually to protect him from what people would think of him) in fact he only became the villain halfway through after he started lusting for Esmeralda

This is a pretty great movie one of my Disney top 3 infact, love the music, the story telling and the twists. Esmeralda in my opinion was a great female character, she knew her strengths and weaknesses, and never backed down or caved to the pressure of changing herself, she accepted who she is and is completely fine with that, and she passes on those lessons to Quasi by treating him like a human being.

I really love the "who is the monster and who is the man?" spin on the story Disney did. And yeah, it's a visually really beautiful film at times. Plus a killer soundtrack and great voice performances? If it weren't for the gargoyles, this would be near perfect for what a Disney adaptation could be.

The opening leading up to the title of this movie is such perfection. Circle of Life might be more "epic" but this being more of a real life situation (corrupt official using his power to oppress minority groups vs animals doing human things) makes it so much more emotional.
