This represents the best of "Sunday Morning" -- a well written, well researched, well-shot, perfectly bookended piece that runs the exact length it should. Storytelling at its finest by the perfect correspondent to tell such a tale.

Bill Geist was the one and only storyteller worth watching on Sunday Morning. Unique looks and voice made you love him as well.

Back in the early 90s, when I was in my early twenties, I became fascinated with Route 66. Living in California made it easy to find some of those old roads that used to be designated US 66. Amboy is a bypassed town that was interesting to see. When I moved out of California in the early 2000s, I moved to Joplin, Missouri. Another Route 66 town.

My father Bill Swan made a lot of iconic fiberglass statues which are placed along Route 66 my favorite statue he made was the Ford Mustang horse which is what the emblem was copied from he has made several others which can be seen in A short Amazon ebook for only 14.99 called "The man behind the mufflerman ".

Looked on Google maps and street view, the El Vado was closed up and fenced in up until last year, when a developer came in and remodeled the whole place, the original parking lot is a huge courtyard, the garage spaces were converted into more rooms it looks like.

I'm orginally from Joisey(NJ)and I met my husband of all things on Xbox.He was born and raised in Oklaholma. We've been married for a little over 2 years. On our 2nd wedding annversary, we decided to get our kicks on Route 66. We visited 2 Route 66 museums. One in Clinton,Ok. and the other in El Reno. We definitely had blasts from the past. We loved it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_66 It was officially decommissioned June 26, 1985. Many of the stretches of pavement that were part of Route 66 do still exist. Several of the cities and states do have guide signage or other markings to point the way or describe certain important or interesting points. TX just had legislation pass to make its part of Route 66 a route with "historic corridor" status; new brown/white signs are being made that local officials can acquire to mark the routing. Occasionally, there are certain bypassed sections that have been overgrown like in the video, or lead off into what is now fenced or otherwise private property. Some parts were included with an interstate (some that "replaced" the Route included I-15, I-40, I-44, and I-55) as a service/frontage road. At times, you will see an old portion of the Route that is blocked or otherwise stops, mainly due to something that was built since it was originally constructed. The former Amarillo Air Force Base (now Rick Husband-Amarillo Intl. Airport) was built on top of Route 66's early routing east of town; you can see the east (goo.gl/maps/Nvhoq2zBF2A2) and west (goo.gl/maps/CMkbmStUreQ2) spots online where it stops. The construction of the base there led to one of the few Route 66 bypasses in TX before I-40 was built.

It's not an official US highway anymore but about 80% of it is still driveable. I drove it myself from Chicago to LA this past April and loved it.

@@JeffDeWitt " 80% of it is still driveable?" I would say thats a REAL stretch since most of it is actually UNDER I-40. I have driven a lot of it in NM, AZ and CA and by far the best stretch is between Ash Fork, AZ and Needles, CA. particualrly between Kingman and Topock.
