From 1999: Roger Welsch on a golf course in Nebraska's Sandhills

Humorist, author and longtime "Sunday Morning" contributor Roger Welsch, whose "Postcards from Nebraska" were a long-cherished feature on our show, has died at age 85. In this report that originally aired on June 13, 1999, Welsch paid a visit to Mullen, and the Sand Hills Golf Club, a world-class golf course constructed in the middle of nowhere, that follows the natural contours and biology of the Sandhills.

So good to see some long familiar faces, but hard to accept the reality that this great segment would be considered by many viewers to have aired many years ago. To me, as my folks & their folks before them would say, it “seems like it was just yesterday”.

I was taking my elderly parents to south dakota to see my sister in the 1990s. I was going to go through the Sandhills, until i talked to the attendant at a rest area in Nebraska, i told her i was going to drive through the Sandhills, she got emotional and said don't do it, its too desolate. I stayed on the main interstate.
