After the 1988 publication of the novel "The Satanic Verses," which Muslim fundamentalists were convinced insulted Islam, the Ayatollah Khomeini issued an order than author Salman Rushdie be executed. He lived for nine years under threat of being killed. In this interview originally broadcast on "CBS Sunday Morning" on September 29, 2002, Rushdie talked with correspondent Martha Teichner about the battle over freedom of thought in Islam and the "enriching jumble" of his past that has inspired his books; his 1999 move to New York City; and the problem of becoming "famous for the wrong thing."

@@peace-now Actually, this kind of attack is not permissible in Islam. I don’t speak on behalf of the decisions passed by the Shia elite in Iran, but they are not considered to be any authority for the vast majority of the Islamic world because they are Shia, so no Muslim is obliged to carry out this Fatwa. Furthermore, in Islam a person cant take the law into their own hands and do something like this, no matter how justified they may seem. I dislike Salman Rushdie and his works, but they need to be dealt with intellectually, not with a knife. This attack only makes Islam and Muslims as a whole seem like a bloodthirsty nation that kills any critic, while in reality this is not true.

@Megha Shukla The reason why the killing of Salman Rushdie seems barbaric is that on the surface you only see the killing of someone who is a writer, but the Muslims see the killing of someone who has insulted God and their Prophet. It from your God that you were indifferent to insulting God in the book of Satanic Verses (it is enough to read the translation of the Quran to find out who is telling the truth and who is lying!) It's honestly not surprising that behind the scenes you don't know much, you don't know much. The American government does not consider the killing of Palestinian children to be brutal! Terror does not consider brutality! But killing someone who insulted God is brutal, it's very interesting! This is what my fellow Muslims should do when someone insults our great Nabi (SAW)? I believe that when someone insults our Nabi (SAW) it is nothing but a test from Allah'tala. Allah is testing us to ensure we maintain our composure, our restraint, our patience, our tolerance against those who degrade the image of our beloved Prophet (SAW). Whenever we detect an insult, we should approach those who have no respect for our Nabi (SAW) and embrace them with compassion and humility. We must do this to show how amazing Islam is - in that we persevere in the face of hate and criticism. We must love and respect those who hate our Prophet. These are the teachings. When these evil people see what Muslims are, and what Islam teaches they will immediately abandon their own belief and accept Islam. Our beautiful deen will grow faster than ever before. Alhmadulliah. Allah will be pleased as we've passed the test and we will all enter Jannah inshAllah. What is happening now is a failed test. After every insult our Muslim brothers and sisters go on a witch hunt against those who insult, with assaults, killings, bombings, stabbings, death threats, violence, anarchy and general mayhem. Even those who silently support these radical Muslims are failing the test. Those who were thinking of embracing Islam will now turn their backs on the greatest religion of Peace because of these extremists. This makes Allah'tala very angry and you will bring his curse upon you. Once you fail the test there is no coming back. Jahanam is your final resting place.

I was thinking this way till I finally lost interest in the religion. If you study Islam well, you will see that there is no morality in it ,no empathy and forgiveness, the Hadiths and Quran both have violent instructions. There is a lot of things you guys don't know until you find out that there is element of lies in Islam.. besides most of the things seen as insults are true just that most Muslims don't know that's what is in Islam sources...the satanic verses incidence is true reported by ibn Abbas(prophet cousin) and ibn taymiyya and others ,,the prophet married 6 year old and had sex at 9 years which is a fact in Islam sources...child marriage is supported by Quran 65:4 talking about divorcing women who haven't menstruated because they're too prepubescent..you can check ibn kathir tafsir to see what the verse clearly says...no one insults islam more than its own sources

Given Islam publicly stated agenda to impose it's barbaric theocratic legal system globally & a doctrine that inherently devalues human life(as demonstrated by this adherent of Islam) the West would do well to ban Islam

@@darkenergy8140 may I ask you some question to help clarify what is believed by adherents of Islam, but most importantly how what is believed informs what behaviour is permissible & of course I wish evaluate the value Islam ascribes to humans? Of course in the spirit of reciprocity feel free to ask me anything, I will answer. But please refrain from dialogue that doesn't contribute value, i.e. attempts to offend, denigrate each other as it wastes your time & mine, beside I am not offendable, so of course you can say anything you like with the exception under law of speech that incites or threatens violence.

the real reason he got stabbed was Hadi Matar got indoctrinated by religious doctrine and was willing to give up his life's freedom. the idea of religions to think there perfected is only religious propaganda and no where near the truth and it is the members who must pay the price for this erroneous belief

He wrote a book. I don't believe it was even meant to be offensive. The vicious response reflects badly on Islam. I'm not saying that all of Islam is like that, but at least a part of it is.

People would not celebrate him if he had written an antisemitic book. Has anything good come from him? Why was he knighted by the queen? At the same time, laws have to be followed and justice needs to come from courts, not from our own hands.
