Academically, I used to be proficient in all things academics when it came to grammar school and highschool but when it came to college my whole life turned around. What did he mean by "needing to classify yourself as white"? I'm a bit confused since obviously you can't falsify that sort of thing. Does anyone know what he meant?
@moohendischi3 жыл бұрын
So Its a bit weird. People of middle eastern descent (Arabs and Persians) don’t have their own category and must classify as ‘white’ despite not being Caucasian. The only exception I can think of are Sudanese, reason being they are considered Arab due to being Arabic speakers but due to them being darker in color it doesn’t make sense to classify white.

yes! most public out of state schools accept very few out of state students so odds-wise it is much harder to get in. MSAR is a great way to find out which public schools are friendly to out of students because they are not all created equally, but some actually take none

Luigi's Med Journey ditto!!! In an old AAMC report, it shows how small the proportion of Filipino physicians is compared to other Asian ethnicities. It sucks that although Filipinos are one of the fastest growing Asian groups in the US, that they are still considered ORM because systems fail to recognize the diversity in the Asian racial experience
@user-zl4ch7ux2n4 жыл бұрын
@@luigismedjourney9879 There are a few schools that consider Filipino URM. At UC San Francisco, Filipino is considered an URM (Source: diversity.ucsf.edu/URM-definition ). I think Utah Med might consider filipino URM as well, but I'm not sure.

It's kind of a nitpick but "MD candidate" isn't really a thing; it's used for degrees where you have to write some sort of thesis like a PhD candidate would. I get that people use it to highlight the "MD" part but technically speaking it's a bastardization of PhD terminology. Great episode though.
@what_do_you_want8983 жыл бұрын
People use that phrase all the time. ‘medical student’ can be interpreted of lots of things. ‘MD’ candidate is the professional way of stating your tittle.

Rayan I appreciate this video! Not that impressed with the invited speaker. Interesting how She said that she emigrated alone, but when she received her accepted phone call she was with her grandmother at a medical visit in the USA! So...hard to believe that she immigrated alone! ... She explains that the Iranian education system is inadequate and that she immigrated for better education ...and then she mentioned that her BSc was way easier than the Iranian school. Also mentioned that she had support from her family ...oh I thoughts that she immigrated by herself...I immigrated by myself and I can pick up on those that really did the real thing!
@KMartha224 жыл бұрын
I think that the bit about how she is disadvantaged explains all of your concerns.
@makhloufbannoud6444 жыл бұрын
Maybe she immigrated alone without her (Mom/Dad .... ) but had other family meme era here that supported her a little. Also when she said her family supported her maybe emotionally or maybe they followed her few years after. I’m not saying that you’re wrong but maybe she’s using her story to her advantage and not saying everything which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion.

if she is asian? would she get accepted?
@user-zl4ch7ux2n4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Persians are not considered URM. Also the myth that Asian and White students can't get in with lower stats needs to stop. This is a gpa mcat grid showing acceptance rates: schools.studentdoctor.net/data/factstablea24-3.pdf . Even though the chances are lower for non-URM groups, this grid shows 2,240 Asian students getting accepted to MD schools with a 29 or lower on the old mcat (which is equivalent to a 506 or lower on the new MCAT).
@boxerpete42614 жыл бұрын
A. Blacks and Hispanics with scores of X will get into colleges, med school, and law school easier than Asians and Whites
@boxerpete42614 жыл бұрын
Prove me wrong
@user-zl4ch7ux2n4 жыл бұрын
@@boxerpete4261 That's true, but I never made that argument. I don't think you understand how normal distributions and averages work. The bell curves for asian and white stats are shifted to the right against the black and hispanic ones, but that's not the same to saying it's impossible to get in with low stats as a white or asian person. It's just less likely. There are thousands of whites and asians that get accepted to medical schools with well below average MCATs but there are way more whites and asians that get into medical school with competitive MCATs.
@user-zl4ch7ux2n4 жыл бұрын
@@boxerpete4261 If you paid attention, you would have noticed that she is from Iran which is in the continent of Asia. Averages don't equal cutoffs. Each race has a bell curve and on average it's harder for Asian and White students. However, bell curves have people who fall below the average and who are above the average. I made the point that there are a lot of Asian and White students who get in with lower numbers. It's just lower probability. I literally said in my first comment "Even though the chances are lower for non-URM groups" (which means Asians and Whites).
