What a journey! I had so many thoughts during this: "Why would you cover up that gorgeous wood?" "The dye looks cool, what's the fail there?" "Oh I see, that finish is not stable at all!" I'm glad you went back to the original wood, it looks really good with the black base.

The paint technique looked cool…it looked like blown art glass. And the natural wood looks great with the black base. I’m guessing you used a primer before the color application. If it had shellac in it, the tannins shouldn’t have leached out. I think this technique is worth another try. I like where this is headed if you’re willing to try it again. Best of luck to you!

I made wood turning when I was 14-15 YO, and what I see here gives me the taste to return to that, and I am 73 by now. What a nice lobby. Like others above, it was a nice try with white epoxy and color spots, but the grain of this special piece of wood is unlikely. Bravo.

What you thought was a fail was very pretty, but I much prefer the natural wood grains. My dad and my late husband both did so much wood working, and I loved watching them, helping when I could. I have several pieces of their handiwork in my home, and love it. My dad worked mostly with pine, but husband worked with oak, cedar, and black walnut from our property. It's all deeply loved

I love spalted wood and thought you were nuts covering it up. Sorry your dye failed but am very glad you got it back to spalt. I just did a spalted urn and cut an 1/2” inset in the lid and put my badge and wings in it then poured resin over the whole thing. It is really solid.

i have to say i do indeed prefer wood over paint. i sometimes see woodturners apply a "colored" finish... such as yellowish or similar, where i find the natural grain color is beautiful enough. but, that being said, other finishes don't necessarily take away from the beauty of the wood.
