I read this book on a whim and ended up DEVOURING it within a few days! I was not expecting to like it as much as I did and it was very easy to read. It definitely had some parts that came across more YA but I think it redeemed itself with the action parts! I agree about Hawke being controlling and Poppy becoming more submissive. I am hoping the second book we see her get that spunk back. I have started the second book but did not finish it yet. So far it is pretty good! Great Review!😁

Yes!!! This book was definitely easy to fly through... I never wanted to put it down. I really want to learn more about the world and everything in it so I'll definitely be reading the next book whenever I get around to actually buying it lol 😅

I read it, I prefer Maas. I agree with you I didnt like how Poppy was by the end of the book

You're going to read ALL the books? Hmm... You're going to be very busy. Having the "learning everything about whatever you touch" superpower would be very useful for that desire though. I like the idea that this explores responsibility vs agency. What you ought to do vs what you want to do. How being born into a certain situation can place limitations on you. That sounds like a pretty cool journey to go on especially with it following someone who's supposed to be this sweet, innocent pure individual that finds their own way to live. It's a shame that the power dynamic switches at the end though. Like you said hopefully it will resolve itself in later books but it seems a shame to give the character this arc of gaining their own agency and power only to have it subverted at the end. How do I feel about sex scenes? Since I have to read everything in audiobook format I'm not a huge fan of them. I don't particularly find people's voices "sexy" so a lot of the time full on sex scenes are either just boring or kinda awkward. I can't think of a book that i've read that's had explicit sex that I enjoyed BECAUSE of the sex.

You bring up a good point about audio books and sex scenes... I can't imagine having to listen to that and someone reading "pretending" to be sexy... I would probably start laughing which would totally take me out of the story. I already giggle internally most of the time... my inner 5 year old finds those things very awkward and funny 😁
