FIREPLACE and more SPACE in the DUGOUT ! Extending the dugout shelter.
Finishing the walls and the roof.
It´s been a while since the last Bushcraft video. Good news is: there are a few coming soon, so don´t forget to subscribe! :)
As many of you commented, the shelter has been pretty small. During my very first Overnighter (check out our Instagram @justrandompfusch to see some footage ;) ) I also realized that the loft may be cozy, but quite impractical in terms of getting in and out. So after some planning I decided to do a massive extension. I dug out a whole lot towards the right to expand the base and also lowered the bed. Since I also wanted to have some kind of fireplace I build one of the new walls out of sandstone and integrated one.
Stay tuned for our first dual overnighter, where we cook up some food over the fire and work on the shelter.
Hope you enjoy watching, feel free to write any constructive criticism, thoughts and ideas in the comments :)

Son I am proud of you. You dug it, changed your mind dug some more, and did it again. Your young you can change your mind as many times as you want. At least you wasn't setting on your but playing videos, you were making them. You showed great smarts, the way you work with rocks and building the walls showed you understand how stuff is built. The thumbs down I don't understand, if they don't like this type of thing, then why are they watching. The most of us really enjoyed it. Please make me some more.

I don't get it, I've seen so many of these dugout, ww1 trench style dwellings on youtube and everyone just loves them. When it rains what's to stop the mud and water from running through the walls and seeping up through the floor no matter what you put down. Everyone just sees these things in the nice dry summer. I've been in construction my whole life and you have to deal with the water by waterproofing the outside of the walls ( at least a chunk of plastic) and build your floor on something that will allow the water to flow underneath, like gravel or sand. A skirt drain would come in darn handy too. It doesn't take a lot of water to make your summer home into winter nightmare.

I am certain you already know that you should have placed a water proof plastic tarp barrier to line the outside log walls. By not doing so the water will penetrate the stones or earth packed down against your log wall. Hence you will have reduced the integrity of your log walls Thus you will also reduce the r value of the wall.I do love your presentation and all the hard work you have put in. I wish I was able to be there with you helping with the construction. Please continue making videos. God bless.

You are doing quite well for yourself on that shelter! I hope that in the end of construction, that it is everything that you've wanted it to be! It's allot of hard work for sure! The project is very unique and should serve you for the years to come. If you were to create a small trench/water troth, 1/2 meter out away from your outer walls to help carry any water that could possibly try and infiltrate down into the walls; well then you should be in great shape! But then, you could also create a sloped overhang on the frontal entrance way; such as to detour any incoming rainfall too! Overall Kiddo, you are doing a great job! I'm proud of Yah!! Had I'd known that you were going to take on a project like this one, I would have a really hot tip for you that would surely blown your mind that involves the use of tree leaves to make your shelter insulated, and yet as they decompose; the leaves will actually provide you with heat to offset high usage of having to use large amounts of firewood.

In the balkans in the old days that's how they was leveling the ground to build their homes, usually the village was on the side of a hill, or deep in a ravin and most houses were technically from the back side baried to the ground, although they were using clay or stone to build them 😉 Also some believe that this is the most ancient way - at least in Europe to build a shelter since maybe even pre historic

To me, you have to finish this to make sense of it, wattle and daub between the logs, and put in clear tarp windows or similar, or its not much better than a tent, except I like how hidden it is and the fireplace space. Or else wouldn't just a super-shelter do? After all that hard graft I think it deserves a really heavy duty tarp, not a carry in your pack tarp too. Great job tho. Thanks for taking time to film the process.

Your welcome, thanks for your comment. I already installed a much better heavy duty tarp, it just didn't fit in the video. I don't like the look of plastic windows, I like it natural. And to me it was just a great challenge and experience building this, wouldn't have had that setting up a tent

Awesome work. I was going to suggest a matock (sp?) Pick axe? Then I saw all the rock at your disposal. Hard work buddy. You dont seem the type to play video games often. I did wonder if you considered to dig down inside what is established.
@JustRandomPfusch
@JustRandomPfusch 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. Pickaxe for sure would have been useful. But I didn't want to carry so many heavy tools. Digging further down wouldn't be a good idea imo, I think it would seep full of water. Could give it a try though, never really thought about it.

Have you considered digging a little trench around it? Just so potential waterfloods of heavy rain flow AROUND it. It looks like there is a little hill nearby or sloped terrain.
@JustRandomPfusch

Yes your right, there is a slight slope and I also considered a trench. So far the shelter is holding up well without, but I think I'll do it someday

JRP Thanks for sharing all your hard work in the forest. You are using a practical design that blends well with the surrounding environment. It was too bad you had to re-do so much of your work in the expansion. Was it a lack of resources that prevented an another solution for a larger area to the right of the main door?? Best success on your wilderness hideaway and I look forward to future videos to be posted.

Thank you :) I'm not sure if I got your question right. Do you mean why I didn't make it as big as it is from the beginning or why I didn't make it even bigger during the expansion?

@@JustRandomPfusch Thanks for the reply. I understand when building a shelter like this that the first version is made to meet a need, but needs change. When you constructed your new expansion to provide for new needs, instead of undoing work you had previously done, could you have just added the space you needed and only had to remodel an entrance to the new space?? I can email you a simple layout drawing of what I was thinking or I can write a Blog post and share a link.

I'm basically building the same thing. But I am dug in about 7 feet on 3 walls. 5 feet on the 4th wall dirt bags the rest of the way on up. Gonna seal walls in with white concrete paint roof will be covered in dirt flat rock floors and small rocket stove with a copper coil for hot water and solar for electricity. And the view I'll have people where I am from pay a million or more for there house. Plus I have plenty of room to add on later on. Plus do an small A frame on top of it later for a kitchen and bath plus sitting room to see my million dollar view

Personal skills and experience gathering. Keep some supplies food water and wood handy. Your shelter there ought to be good for riding out a blizzard comfortably. If you keep it dry inside.
