This is extremely helpful, I have struggled with nomenclature all year and I just found this video the night before my final. I wish I had found this channel earlier but I will for sure recommend it to upcoming students in chemistry.

That's part of knowing your periodic table. Check out my video on the periodic table for a complete explanation. Anything to the left of the semi-metals is a metal and anything to the right of the semi-metals is a nonmetal. The general rule is that the more to the left the more metallic.

For the practice ones, I don't know where the numbers for the polyatomics are coming from. Where is the -2 coming from for CO3?

Polyatomic ions have charges that come from how the atoms bond. Usually, you just memorize these ions at this level. bit.ly/2RaWe6L

The three -2 oxygens create a total charge of -6. So, there must be two +3 irons for a total of +6. The charge of the metal must balance the charge of the non-metal to zero in an ionic compound. Watch the video again you will note the charges are balancing out.

I learn more from channels like this than from my lectures. This was great. I still have one question. Cu_2S is written as Copper(I) Sulfide because the Cu_2 has to balance out with the 2- charge of Sulfur?
