When visiting me Out in California, my Uncle told a man showing off his fancy BMW, all the features and that it was 80k. My Uncle Larry simply said , “ Well, not to brag ( a Midwesterner would NEVER!) but I got a quarter MILLION dollar combine, and I only drive it three weeks a year.” I laughed so hard. I have a 9500 that’s converted to edible bean duty, but it’s been a work horse for literally decades on our farm. The darn thing just never breaks down, it is such a great machine. I thought I was flying the space shuttle when I got that thing. Are you able to get low enough with that rigid auger header. I had to get a flex Draper, I was always missing that lowest pod on every plant. It adds up. You are farming just right for you. It is so important to show all different levels of scale. Farming is “all the above”, their is no wrong answer, JUST FARM! We drastically need more family farms! I’m a little surprised they would dock you for .5%. They mix and match loads pretty easily, it’s not like they would have to actually dry them. Just the regular handling would pull .5 off of them. I’ll start picking 16% beans, and by the high point of the day, they are down to 11.5,then they start getting tougher in to the night, and wetter. We grew organic blacks this year that did 55 bushels at $30/bushel. Only 400 acres though. We love organic dry beans for export. They come in under 20 bushels, but they will do $1000/acre. Factor in the ancient grains we get off the same ground, that’s 2500/acre. We’re not talking market garden returns, my wife blows me out of the water per acre with her 80 acre gold mine, but it’s still really good when you factor in being able to do 1000 plus acres with a lot less labor.

Okay, Grandpa, you gave me a little chuckle. I hope you won't mind, there is no offense intended. I'm PA Dutch too. I have a book on the Reading Railroad, and in it they had a comment about having to replace and resize the cabs on the Reading steam engines to accommodate the "well-upholstered PA Dutch farmers" they were hiring for engineers and firemen. They said it was a hazard having such a tight squeeze around the boiler. I'm thinking John Deere could take a page from the Reading Railroad... My mom used to make stuffed pork chops too. Maybe that is why we are both "well-upholstered."
