12:16 this is incorrect. Or maybe he worded it unclearly. If your advance is £1 million and you earn £1 million, that entire amount goes to the label-you get £0. You only start receiving royalties once the advance is fully recouped. To make £200,000 from a 1million pound advance you’d need to earn £2 million. As the first million is basically a loan you pay back and then the second million is where u get your 20% split which gives you 200k. The label won’t pay you royalties if you still owe them.

Your example doesn't include the interest on the loan which starts running the day you get the advance. So if you release music 3 years after signing, you need to make more. And we haven't even mentioned taxes. These people don't make money.

You're incorrect, sorry. Krept said "if the label spends £1 million", not if you get an advance. But either way you are wrong. If you are given an advance of £1 million, you have made £1 million - it is on the label to have your record(s) make more than that, then give you royalties above the advance. But there is no way you can use pseudo-accounting to bring it down to £0. If the label gives you £1 million, and you fulfill your end of the contract, you have £1 million, it's that simple. Also, if the label spends £1 million to make the record (not including payments to the artist), that's on them, and means that they need your record(s) to make £1.25 million, with an 80/20 split, in order to break even. Let's not spread financial illiteracy please.
