From Registered Nurse to Master of Health Informatics

I have my BSN. Worked as a nurse ( L&D, Nursery/NICU) for 20 years. I start my masters program in August for HCDA!! Excited yet nervous. This video helped me so much. Nice seeing a fellow nurse that has completed this degree!! Thank you. I wish I could get some advice. 🙏🏻😁❤️

Is there a reason why health informatics was chosen over nursing informatics? I am trying to understand the difference between both of them and which one offers more job opportunities. I do not see many nursing informatics positions.

@@adeoluolagbaiye5207 there’s no real difference, nursing informatics can only be taken if you’re a registered nurse. Health Informatics is technically for those who may not have a healthcare background and is a bit more focused on business and IT. Nursing Informatics will include nursing classes that will get you a MSN. In the workforce there isn’t much difference. Nurse Informatics may get paid a little bit more; but that’s because they have nursing licenses. If you already have a nursing license as an RN,BSN- then it doesn’t matter.

Mam, I have completed my masters in Medical Microbiology and I don't have a computer science background so, will I be able to go for health informatics and what am be my chances?

Hi Reshma! You do not need a computer science background to be successful in the MHI program. The students in our masters programs come from more than 100 different undergraduate backgrounds. Michelle says this in the video: "I come from a background of - it's not computer science at all - I mean, from a nurse to being able to do Python a little bit? I mean that's - it's one challenge I was really happy to overcome." A good place to get some experience with python ahead of time would be one of our free "Python for Everybody" courses on the Coursera platform.
