Today is all about planting the summer garden. The sweet potatoes go into the ground, which for us is a sure sign that the hot weather is here and summer is official! I plant sweet bell peppers and hot peppers. Jalapeno is my favorite but this year I also try shishito and sugar rush peach. I plant a dozens of basil plants. Five different varieties fill my gardens. Genovese basil which is a standard culinary basil for making a variety of dishes, including pesto. Red basil, lemon basil, Thai Basil, and Tulsi basil. Tulsi Basil is my favorite because of it's beauty, aroma and medicinal uses. As I harvest my cabbage and broccoli I reflect on how grateful I am for such a fruitful harvest in my first year garden. I give tips on how to grow successful cabbage and broccoli as well as other brassicas.

@@daisygurl3601 the auger I purchased is an 8 inch, 40volt battery operated one. I am hiring a friend to handle ir for me. It weighs 70 lbs and is beyond my weight limit, but the 2 of us together can handle it. It has handle bars on two parallel sides. My friend is a geologist who has worked with some heavy equipment in the oil fields. A dear friend and a brilliant woman. We are helping each other.

Squash plants can climb up a trellis for super easy harvesting. They look pretty on trellises at every stage, and it is amazing to see how well the plants hold their produce no matter how heavy it gets. My daughter weaves the vines as they grow up the trellis, so blossoms and eventually squash appear on both sides. She uses them as a decorative garden feature.

@@BrifromscratchI actually watched a video of a guy who trellised his zucchini by cutting off the leaves as the squash plant grew and he harvested the squash. He said it helped with squash bugs as well to get the plant up off the ground. I thought that was interesting.

Your garden is looking so beautiful. You mentioned that y'all don't eat much okra, but you've also mentioned loving all the freeze dried snacks. So I wanted to offer a suggestion. I slice my okra into rounds and freeze dry, then I'll spritz the dry okra with a little oil and add seasoning of choice (I really like Cajun seasoning). It makes a nice tasty, crunchy snack!

Broccoli leaves are delicious as cooked greens, don't throw them away you would be surprised how good they are, even de-stalked and cut up small and added to salads! My Grandma taught me that, because she grew up during the depression, but I am glad she did, because otherwise I would have missed out on this delicious green! Cooked with Bacon grease or butter, It to me taste like a cross between collard, cabbage, and broccoli!

@Bri From Scratch Hi dear Bri. A great tip for planting plants, especially sweet potatoes, to increase the chances of the sweet potato cuttings succeeding in the soil, it is advisable to put them in a jar of water the day before planting, so that they absorb the water and the cells of the plant are full of water. According to my experience, there is no problem watering immediately after planting, even when it is very hot, on the contrary, it cools the soil around the plants and increases their chances of success. I live in a very hot area most of the year with a short winter and water is the key to success.

I plant all my peppers and my tomatoes with an auger. Super quick. You better put two hands on that drill or you’re gonna twist your wrist. Oops looks like you found that out. Lol 🥰I plant my peppers deeper than you did yours. And I’ve never had an issue with them. Also, I have clay soil. With good compost on the top. There are tons of minerals in that clay soil. I also pinch them. Pinching the center stem creates more branches from the side. Also creating a much more sturdy branch like stem. Two years ago I had so many peppers I didn’t grow any last year. And I plant them deep and I pinch them. It’s been a successful method for me.
