Great overview! Love my Rytm Mk2, but the Uno Drum is kind of a sleeper, imo. Pretty simple to use & just sounds great!

Good choices, but interesting that you left out the Volca Beats and Drums and Behringer's 808 and 909 offerings. ACTUALLY analog, unlike Roland's. All also very affordable.

Well done. Great info presented here. I still have my DR-880 (and I love it) I do One-man Live-gigs with it = with the Bass synth, and a Boss GT-6 guitar effects processor on board. I also use ( 2 ) FS-6 controllers. oNe LovE from NYC

i just couldn't part with Tempest although I got AR Mk2 that beats it most of the direct duels (I prefer distortion and compressor on Tempest). Basically two machines of similar calibre, and while Tempest is 6 voice blank slate poly Evolver (I have Mopho and Evolver and really Tempest is - that, with some envelope shortcuts). AR is more slick and has effects plus insane Elektron Sequencer. With Tempest, I had tons of MIDI issues and sequencer is rudimentary at best, comparing it to Elektron. However - Tempest was one of the sound design courses I took without knowing - because you really, really get DEEP into synthesizing your drums. Tempest also uses two sample slots, but you cannot upload your samples, even with the latest Firmware. Nevertheless, I love these two and actually will do vs video soon. While I have TR-8, Volca drums and beats (so thats 5 drum machines and I didnt even mention Oktatrack and Maschine) I would like to get Pulsar 23 and Erica Synths LXR2, that one sounds siiick.

Currently I don't own any drum machine, but I have a BS2 and an octatrack and I try to learn drum synthesis. Should I stay with this config plus samplepacks or a drum machine is nessesary and will offer something extra?

I am a programmer… and a keyboardist… musicianship comes hard!! I could program a drum machine but its the last thing I want to waste time on… I have synthesizers with more sound creation challenges I prefer to work on. Sorry, but I like presets! I like small… I like a few pads, I like less sound modulation control because it wastes my practice time… which one should I choose? (I like rich sounds.. I hate metronomes!!)

I always loved the sound of Tempest but is it through that Tempest doesn’t work well with audio interfaces? 😳😢

That tempest sounds about as hard as when I tried creating my own drum samples for my circuit using my bass station 2 with pages of notes must have taken me about 3-5 days to get something l liked. I have a drumbrute now, because like you said don't like spending all day sitting with a mouse because I do that for my day job.

It’s not the easiest but it’s great when it all comes together. Drum brute is a safer option for getting things down.

Sold my DB. I can't stand those hi hats, both on original and Impact. Tempest is - one session you dedicate for sound design, the other for arranging. You literally have to build your kits from scratch. But, again, you learn drum synthesis this way. It is a great tool and probably my second favourite after AR.

Hi I am a singer guitarist/ live performer I currently use a Roland SPD one to manually kick out four in the floor patterns live . Im wanting to free up my foot for more looping and looking for a piece of gear that I can load kick samples or use good quality adjustable pre loaded drums Ideally have tap tempo on a midi switch and kick velocity from light to hard hits in an expression pedal to adjust on the fly live As this is a bit out of my “guitarist”knowledge base and there are sooo many sampler/ sequencers out there any advice you could give if this is possible and the best unit to use other that bringing a laptop to gigs would be much appreciated!!

Interesting video, except your cheapest drum machine is not cheap and it excludes beginners and newcomers to electronic hardware.... I can buy a 16-step, 32 pattern Analog Drum Machine plus a 16-step, 32 pattern Analog Bass Line Synth for €210 (AUD$ 340) And I did.
