@chriswatson7965
@chriswatson7965 4 жыл бұрын
The Australian team did think it would become infamous, but it was Greg Chappell's decision. He was under a lot of pressure as captain, and made the decision with that in mind. He ended up losing the captaincy anyway, though technically he made himself unavailable for selection. Personally I didn't have a problem with it at the time, and wished for more underarm bowling in general play. I still do today and also regret the rule change that has banned lobbing the ball over the batsman onto the stumps.

I don't get it. Chappell was wrong here, no doubt, but he didn't seem to have any insight. Mills straight up stomped on Greengrass's head causing 18 stiches. So Nz needed 7 runs to win and 6 for a tie. If you hit a ball without any bounce, then it is a 6. However the bowler balled an underarm bowl along the ground which cannot be hit for a six. For some reason back then this was allowed in Cricket, now it isnt

Yup! Loving the early 1980s fashion. Richie Benaud's remarks making me nostalgic for summers of my childhood (even though I'm one of the people who doesn't really understand cricket).

When they returned to the dressing room, Doug Walters was there, who said to Marsh that a six was possible. Bacchus said nah, impossible, so Walters bet him $100 that he, Walters could do it, hit a six off a ball rolled along the ground. Not long after they agreed to meet at what was then known as North Sydney Number 2 oval to make the bet. So there they are on the pitch with three wickets and bails, Marsh at one end and Walters at the other. Marsh rolls the ball along the ground, Walters dashes down the wicket, out of his crease (no LBW possible) catches the ball with the tip of his shoe, the ball jumps up, Walters swings, and it's a big six. Walters wins the $100, he loved a bet, and a beer or ten. Legend.

If the underarm bowl technically wasn’t illegal at that time then why is it frowned upon and deemed disgraceful? Sorry I’m from America so I don’t really know anything about cricket but I’m trying to understand why this was a huge deal. Thanks for any responses to my question in advance.

Sport has to provide an opportunity for either side to win, at least in theory. Australia's last ball denied New Zealand a chance of even drawing the match. If people need to win that badly, play a team of kids or just shoot the opposition.

The match was between New Zealand and Australia in 1981. New Zealand needed six runs on the last ball. Captain Greek Chappell called his younger brother Trevor Chappell who was bowling the last over. Armball should be thrown. When the under arm ball was thrown, the batsman stopped and threw his ball in extreme frustration that it is a deception. The Australian team won the match. He says I have not been able to lead a normal life till today.
