From Yeezy to Supreme, Hypebeast Culture Explained | Suddenly Obsessed Marathon

Some people will spend stunning amounts of money on products like the Yeezy Red October and the Hermes Himalayan Birkin. Drop culture, social media and extremely limited production are creating a thriving resale market. The growing economy around reselling is opening doors for companies like Stock X, a billion-dollar online marketplace looking to change the way we buy and sell everything from streetwear to electronics. This marathon episode of Suddenly Obsessed takes an inside look at the some of the most exclusive brands in the world and the people who spend a fortune buying them.
In 2019, a diamond-encrusted Birkin handbag made of crocodile, from the French luxury brand Hermes, sold for half a million dollars. The Birkin consistently shatters sales records at auction, selling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. But experts say the bag cost just $2,000 at its inception in 1984. Here’s what happened in between, elevating the Birkin from an expertly-crafted leather accessory to the ultimate status symbol and collector’s item.
Apparel brand Supreme started as a small and edgy New York City skateboard shop in 1994, and with word of mouth marketing and a product-scarcity strategy, it has grown into a global brand with a cult following and a billion-dollar valuation.
Kanye West grabbed the fashion world’s attention when he debuted sneakers designed in collaboration with Nike in 2009. Retailing at over $200, the shoes were released in extremely limited quantities and sold out instantaneously. They now resell in the thousands of dollars. The success of the shoes finally put West on the map in the fashion industry. For years his designs were met with ridicule. But recently, some of that excitement has turned to skepticism. Certain Yeezy models cost a lot less on the resale market than they used to. And resale prices are a tell-tale sign of a product’s clout, especially for Hypebeasts.
StockX is an online marketplace for luxury sneakers, handbags and apparel like Retro Jordans, a Hermes Birkin Himalayan crocodile bag in matte, or a Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. You can even find extremely rare Pokemon cards like a Charizard-Holo 1999 base set 1st edition. In November 2018, StockX sold its most expensive item ever: a 70,000-dollar Louis Vuitton x Supreme Malle Courier Trunk. By June of 2019, the Detroit-based company reportedly reached a $1 billion valuation. In half a decade, StockX went from a simple price guide for sneakers to a reselling empire and it has its sights on disrupting the retail market.

Somewhat I understand them as a former sneakerhead. I still remember the feeling of getting the shoes you wanted to buy for years. When I quit socia media (for different reasons) I realized I'm just fooling myself, the main point of collecting these expensive but almost useless items are for clout. For attention, pride, greed. Conspicuous consumption, the fact that 90% of my online friends can't afford the shoes I was able to buy before, it felt really good. Fast forward, without my social media no one pays attention anymore. I had 86pairs, 42pairs of them are hyped (Yeezys, Jordan 1, human nature etc..) I sold each and every shoes I owned it took me a year and half. Worst part is, I only get 60% of the money I spent for it because it lost its hype. So yeah, it was a bad habit and will never buy another expensive shoes again. I have one pair for everything Vans Tripple White for 60bucks.

You're obviously just a hypebeast trying to justify paying $500 for shoes. Your arguments are lacking bruh. Me buying a shoe that i know provides that quality and the tech for a fair price isnt about branding, its about buying smart. You guys pay for the hype. I think flexing and clout are the main problems of hypebeast culture. Lots of people have a hobby of collect things like figurines, cards, comics, baseballs, etc., but usually in those hobbies people don't intentionally buy things that they dont like because of hype or to go out and flex on people. Hypebeast culture WANTS you to buy things you don't want, and buy things that are expensive because of hype and not quality. I think people should focus more on what THEY like, rather than being told by friends, famous people, or corporations what to like, because those kinds of purchases ultimately end in regret.

@Chanel Simone Homegirl "humans" is now a term that gets thrown around way too loosely nowadays. Also, what you're seeing here is just another reason why more and more people are becoming misanthropes and are giving up on life. I don't hate humanity (since it's pointless) but I do know that we're truly living in demonic, inhuman times right now. #EnjoyTheDecline

@@nikoenciso01 good for you that you actually got to wear them while MJ played in them. Like I said, I couldn't afford them then. I wasn't the type of kid who'd bug my parents to buy me one either. So I buy them now coz I could, even if they are like mere representations of what MJ worn. I'm very picky, though. i don't buy those collabs at all. Never liked em & couldn't understand the hype. I stick with the OG colorways, and get only those with good craftsmanship. It's why I am yet to own an AJ13 even if I want one, because the materials are just bad. At least some 11s & 12s are made of very good leather.
