Real Turkish Delight is delightful , Fry's bears almost relationship to it. Fry's is rose flavoured which is traditional, another common flavour is lemon. Mint cake is traditionally used by hikers, a way to get a hit of sugar.

Normal Turkish delight is rose flavoured jelly, cut into cubes, coated in a mix of cornflour and icing sugar. Fry’s basically takes rose jelly and covers it in chocolate

Brown version is simply made with brown sugar. For the truly hardcore they make a chocolate covered version, just in case the original didn't have enough sugar in it for you. One of these at the bottom allows you to climb any mountain. When Sir Edmund Hilary became the first man up Everest, this is what he took.

The flavour of Turkish delight is rose water usually for the pink variety. The traditional non chocolate type rose is the main flavour and then lemon and orange. There are many flavours available however and some have nut pieces in for example

The striped boiled sweet is a mint humbug and has a caramel centre. The purple one is most likely a Blackcurrant liquorice which has a piece of liquorice at the centre. And Treacle(tree-cul) is a refined sugar. It comes in light and dark and the dark variety is known as molasses in the states.

Traditional Turkish Delight is rose flavoured as is Fry's. Although you're right its not normally coated in chocolate. Traditionally it would be cut into big cubes and dusted with icing/powdered sugar. Other flavours that are common are lemon, pineapple, rasberry, and even coconut.

I have never liked licorice so please put me in the hate column for that one. My number 1 here would be Munchies. Best wishes for your Birthday Nathan and I bet you are both looking to your upcoming Halloween cruise.. Take care guys, best wishes from the South coast of the UK.

Turkish Delight is typically flavoured with rose water. I quite like those bars by Fry's. For a few years, a supermarket in the UK stocked a Polish made TD, which had a very nice texture and flavour (dusted not chocolate coated). The rose flavour was very evident in that.... I believe roses are edible too.

I now live in Turkey and the best Turkish Delight (Lokum) is very small pieces of jelly coated in fine sugar. Kendal Mint Cake is designed to give you an instant energy boost. It carried on many expeditions and has been both to the top of Mount Everest and the Antarctic. The definition of a Cake also includes 'a compact mass' and that is why it is called Mint Cake

The liquorice ones are pronounced Pont-e-fract cakes. They're a local to the town of Pontefract, which was the centre of liquorice growing in Britain from the 16th to 19th centuries. The stamp on them is the castle gate, which has been used since about 1612, I think. Haribo's major UK factory is in Pontefract. Personally, I've always hated liquorice sweets (though I quite like liquorice root). I really like Fry's Turkish Delight (it's rose flavoured), but it's very very different from real Turkish Delight, which is a tougher jelly, and it comes in different flavours like rose, lemon, almond, honey, pistachio... (If you ever get to London, or if they do international shipping, Fortnum and Mason do it in small mixed boxes - It's my treat whenever I go to London.) Kendal mint cake was taken by Edmund Hillary when they climbed Everest for the first time - apparently they sat at the top nibbling mint cake and trying to get to grips with having made it. Shackleton took it with him when they tried to cross Antarctica. It's similar to Scottish tablet. Almost pure sugar. And yes, there's also a brown mint cake, made using brown sugar. It also comes chocolate covered as well (dark or milk). Prawn cocktail crisps are Marie Rose sauce flavour really.

You can't get much more British than thus selection. Treacle and Licorice toffees, humbugs and blackcurrant and licorice boiled sweets are my childhood. We used to have old fashioned sweet shops where everything was weighed. The assistant would stand in front of hundreds of jars of different sweets and as a child I would take forever to decide and drive the shopkeeper crazy. Then there were penny sweets and mixed bags. Different regions of the UK have different names for them.

There is a whole history around Kendal Mint Cake and has become a favourite of walkers and explorers. It was taken on the trans-Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton 1914-1917 and Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay also nibbled on it during the first successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.

Firstly I have to say I am a big fan of Frys Turkish Delight. but it bears little resemblance to real Turkish Delight. The "Real" Turkish Delight has no chocolate. for a start. and the texture is different. I'm not sure how many flavours there are, but the ones I like are the Rose Water flavour and Almond. They are absolutely delicious and you have got to try them....

Turkish Delight & to a lesser extend black liquorice are the Marmite of the confectionery world...wait you have tried Marmite right? Caramac was a pretty big hit in the 80's/90's in Scotland, though dated prior to that. Made by a UK company called Rowntree who had a a good range of UK sweets & chocolates. To be really nerdy, Rowntree got bought out by Nestle, however Rowntree kept a degree of autonomy (and their workers) over their products. Nestle had bought shares in Rowntree over the years, then quickly offered Rowntrees a deal where they offered the management a 1 day only buy-out deal, after finding out that a rival company had been buying up ex-Rowntree shares elsewhere that would have seen Rowntrees taken over and possibly ditched (apart from the recipes). Rowntrees were based in York, a city most people would recommend you visit should you visit our shores one day - for far wider valid historical reasons, not just chocolate bars lol - they have a shop there to tell this ~120 year old confectionery company history Kendal mint cake isn't terrible, however it is not an everyday/one a week/once a month/once a year item 99% of people would buy these days. It's pretty much now sold as a survival food to put in your kit bag when going hiking/camping etc as an energy booster. Pretty much most of us in the UK have probably got some 5+ year old untouched bars in our camping kit lol Anyways, another great vid, even with another two flavours down, you've still only just scraped the surface of the UK's crisp game :^)

@@FromtheHobbitHole You're in for a treat with the Turkish Delight, I love the Fry's with chocolate but it's kind of an acquired taste. You'll appreciate the plain frosted stuff more as you'll get to enjoy the flavour better. I guess the baby wanted a taste too 😁 Ileave really near to Kendal where the mint cake is made it also comes in brown or choc covered and you can also buy it in little silver round foil patty trays as well. As others have said it's aimed at walkers/hikers and climbers to get quick energy. We live very close to the Lake District so there are lots of walkers and climbers. Glad u enjoyed the prawn cocktail flavour crisps but for me the only place for them is the bin 😂 I have a real aversion, they have a strange sweetness that i really dont like. Agree that turkish delight is better without the choc and is a middle eastern/ med thing but sold here too. Mostly in a mix of rose and lemon flavour but it does come in all kinds. 😅 yeahhh…guilty! It probably has to do with the fact that we use/hear the phrase “cocktail shrimp” in reference to the cold shrimp that’s dipped into the sauce. So when we hear/read the flavor of the crisps, our brains first think of the shrimp before thinking of the sauce. Now this is just a theory based on what our brains did when looking at the bag of crisps.

The stuff you buy is always too chewy, they don't know how to make it properly. My mum used to make proper homemade crunchy treacle toffee. You have to boil the mixture longer to make it set crunchy.
