Brother, that is looking fantastic. Its way straighter than factory dude. Once you have more paint on the small gaps will close up even more.

Thanks Mr n Mrs Jeff. Don't feel bad about the bonnet. I was thinking previously, all the bangin' and tappin' - how close are we to the original contour. Turned out alright tho. I actually did an early 240 up for the pre-wife. (late 80's) Mate and I put a LOT of bog in it. Was an ex rally car. Had really rusted flares on the front guards - which were filled with bog. Guess what!! That lasted years!!! and more!!! Wouldn't do it again but. Gave me respect for the ol' bog tho. Also we had no grill, stroll thru the wreckers - lo and behold, a Ford XY grill is bloody close. Bit of cutting and fitted/looked good. Luv yer work and enthusiasm Jeff. Keep it up

Fit the tension rod to the hinges first, these will stop the movement up and down and may move the final height of the bonnet slightly so set it with these on. Also means you don't have to use the bonnet stay unless its windy.

They sold you a left hand hood just move the hood prop flange from the other(old) hood to the new one ...ps if you grind the bolts down near the hood they wont scratch your paint..you also made the right decision on the old hood if in doubt throw it out..saves time..thanks Jeff..

I was thinking the old bonnet was looking pretty good after all the work but certainly it is hard to beat a new panel. A carbon one would certainly be hard to make fit correctly since you cant bend it, great work!

HI Jeff, Quick question about your welder set up. I see your new welder is just a cheap mig from bunnings (hope you got a snag with it). How does it work? Would it be suitable for welding panel patches into chassis? What other accesories did you fit it with? Just asking as I have a Tig but am looking for a cheap mig to weld patch panels and if this is good for one of the best home built car channels on youtube then it will be good enough for me. Thanks in advance.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I have already got a Beetle vid in the bank (filmed yesterday) and this welder is much better than my old one at welding on the panels. My old one had only 6 temp settings, where this has a dial which gives much more flexibility. Also it weighs half of what the old one does, and it 'sparks' at a much higher rate than my old one. I am quite happy with it.

The two rods that go from side to side between the bonnet hinges
@365hillclimb
@365hillclimb 6 жыл бұрын
The two tension rods are torsion beams (like the front of a non-super Beetle) or anti-roll bars just behind the headlights. They twist around a central pivot point so they lock UP and DOWN and that's really it. For reference, you can see them on my Datsun back when there was more Datsun attached: c1.staticflickr.com/1/701/23223325680_5f7d5c1f0f_k.jpg

I couldn't have been more curious to see how that new hood was going to fit. You're repeatedly kicking yourself for getting the hood...you're being way too hard on yourself Jeff. That's hardly "giving up"! Give yourself a break man! I'm curious if the place you got the hood from sells other new steel body parts like fenders, cowls, valances?
@HomeBuiltByJeff

Yep, they have a whole bunch of parts now. They are finalising full replacement doors, rubbers, a whole heap of stuff. It is great to see companies doing the R&D to bring us these parts.

Good to know! So awesome for the S30 market that Australia is in the game because you guys fill the holes or otherwise correct what we don't do well over here. That looks like a nice and proper hood. I'm going to keep my eyes on this co. especially once I get a 2nd car. I realize I need two cars to work on, that way I can have one up and running a much higher % of the time. I'll never kick myself for putting a new hood on myself lol. Your time on the old hood wasn't a loss because you got mad experience from it. I suppose I was wrong about what I said, that being hard on yourself shows your passion and how you get these solid results.

@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
A MIG is the best place to start. It is almost like a hot glue gun. I would recommend one with gas as you can now buy a bottle and then just pay a reasonable fee to swap it when empty(if you are in Aus you can do it now at Bunnings). The simplest is gasless, but with gas makes cleaner welds.
