Front Mission 2 - Should You Play This Game?

Front Mission 2 on Nintendo Switch has great core gameplay, but falls short in some other areas. We'll dig into the mech based tactical rpg and discuss what is does well and whether this is a game for you. This version of Front Mission 2 is actually a remake of the game by the same name but previously released only in Japan. This is the second game in the series and the remake of Front Mission 3 is currently in the works, while the first game in the series had its remake released earlier this year under the name Front Mission First.

Its nice that you covered this. this is a game i was looking forward to playing next after BG3. i'm just waiting for the physical copy. would you know the physical copy release date?

All I've seen is that it will have a physical release next year, but I haven't seen an exact date.

I don't agree with everything you said but I think you did a great job on the video. I love the Front Mission series and I've been playing them since I first ran into a fan translation of the SNES rom into english when i was 11 or 12 years old (2001-2002) Thanks for covering this!

Nice video! I have this pet theory that SRPG fans exist along a spectrum: on one end are people who primarily care about intricate and challenging battles (the classic Fire Emblem end), and on the other are people who primarily care about character customization (the Final Fantasy Tactics end). Sounds like this game was perhaps a little too far toward the FFT end of the spectrum?

Sort of, but in a FFT or more traditional character customization game, there are usually some great synergies you can build between characters (at least in the great ones anyway). You don't get the synergies here. Honestly, the more SRPGs I play, the more I'm liking ones with smaller team sizes, but highly customizable units/team and/or intricate and challenging battles. For instance, Redemption Reapers had a small team and challenging battles and Tactics Ogre had highly customizable team builds. Both of these had some great synergy between characters though which I think is the thing I enjoy most. Nothing like setting up the perfect combo or ambush and watching your enemies fall like dominoes lol.

The game devs really nerfed* long range weapons between front mission 1 and 2. All of my long range specialists have fallen behind because it’s hard to meet the criteria for an attack. Maintaining 6 AP usually requires not moving or moving 1-2 spots so unless an enemy approaches and you are in good position you won’t be able to attack. When you get cannon weapons it’s more doable.

Yeah, long range weapons can be hard to use. You really have to keep everyone together and move slow to level up the long range skills.

Cool video, quick and yet detailed no-nonsense overview. I've already set to obtain the game (had quite a great time with original FM3, and FM4, and OK-ish time with 1st Remake), but after this review the game looks even more appealing. Although I'm also set to getting it after the Steam release, due to the first game performing very poorly on Switch (it's old and incapable of anything, Nintendo should've let it die peacefully a couple of years ago and released the next gen), didn't expect anything better from the 2nd game in terms of performance on Switch, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be awesome to play on Steam Deck (and it seems that the patches, that should come in the meantime, are also quite welcomed, heard about the controversial quality of the translation, that developers are aiming to redo and improve)

This footage is from the Switch version which very well may have a lower resolution, but ultimately I think the aim was to capture the look of the original game.
