The Tenth Technology Predator was wind tunnel tested and came with a front wing in the kit late 1993 / early 1994.

This is a classic example of what cracks me up about racing, People all the time do stuff just because the fast guys do it. They have no idea why the are doing it but if the fast guy does it then it must be the thing to do.

The physics of air movement over an off road buggy/truggy do not scale properly, therefore I would agree with having a front wing on high speed tracks, especially high speed sweepers, however I would never have the wicker. I cut the wicker tab off of all my cars just because of what you said. “It pushes air” I equate that to a parachute slowing the object down. An angle to the the wing less than 45 degrees is more than enough downforce for any rc car. This is why pros will say it gets a bit bittier. The regular Joe racing will never know the difference.

$10 or $11 dollars is pretty cheap for a piece of plastic? Only in the RC world is that considered cheap! In the regular world people would be like wtf?!?!
@VestedUTuber4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the plastic, really. If it was just a piece of ABS or polystyrene, it would definitely not be cheap. But this is polycarbonate, which is not a cheap plastic anywhere.

A note about Formula 1, it's really cool watching a race when the cars have an on-board camera. You can see the car actually squish down more onto the suspension once it gets up to speed. These cars create enough down force at their top speeds that they are capable of driving upside down.

Started back in 1993 when the ran the double x at the 93 worlds in England . The car pushed soo freaking bad. The guys where taking their rear wing and mounted another full size wing or some piece of Lexan mounted it on the front shock tower. Also a company called tenth technology mounted a wing on the front of their 4wd car. They ran that car at the 1996 winter champs in Florida.njustmsome rehashed stuff. I'm a remember when hippie😄

very interesting! I've seen this set up being used a lot and I always wondered if it actually helped the buggy on the track. Thank you man for taking the time to explain your view and thoughts on this set up. Lots of good information, and lots of backed up information as well. Again thank you for that!

Great video. I was wanting to hear an honest review on this new trend. I thought this was the purpose of cab foward bodies. but it makes sense to run the wing. I have a 3racing cactus mid motor with the front brass bulkhead and I feel it gives the same effect but more consistently thru out the track. Plus no additional drag. A bit more weight but my buggy feels more balanced.
@nateemmett44859 жыл бұрын
What's interesting to look at is the small winglet type things and are now appearing on the front fairings of the Moto GP bikes. I think your correct about them being advantageous for a high speed track, however it makes sense to me that it would help for both slick and high bite.
@deusexaethera6 жыл бұрын
The vertical portion of the wing doesn't cause extra drag. What it does is trap a rotating pillow of high-pressure air in the concave space above the wing, and the wind slides over that rotating pillow of high-pressure air pretty smoothly. This is the same reason why driving a pickup truck with the tailgate up doesn't actually decrease fuel economy the way people imagine it would.
@dirtrider88 Жыл бұрын
5:50 yea cause you wouldnt want to do all those things you describe happen on a high grip surface (add steering and hold it down to the track) on a loose surface. i could only imagine if anything you would want more wing on a loose surface. more downforce and more grip

I have never really run a front wing on any of my buggies, but I do run one on my sprint car. I have found that they can help but it is best to not develop your set up having the the front wing. Last week I was running my sprint car and the car handled good all night but on the first lap in the main i got into a crash that destroyed my front wing and I could notice a huge difference in the way the car steered into and through the corner. There are benefits to having a front wing but if your base set up is not right all it will do is mask a problem and you will not be as fast as you could be.

Hey Jason just a little update on the wing on low traction tracks . I tested the wing on my Mod B5m ,and at first I was like that's not going to work lol . but I was impressed ! they really do work awesome . the track conditions are Clay but its really old needs to be refreshed . temps are 50-60 degrees indoor . grip is low-medium grip . Ok now the results ! ! AWESOME Corner entrie and wide sweepers u can really stay on full throttle and carry awesome corner speed . corner exit was pretty good as well . but if you had to ask me would you recommend this to any one else I would say Yes ! . I won't race with out one from now on

I did see something similar to these wings on 4WD buggies a few years ago. Nothing new under the sun I guess. Good vid :)

Sprint car racers have been using a front wing for as long as I can remember. That goes for full scale and RC. Dirt oval uses similar theory as Formula One and Indy cars. I have raced dirt oval and off road for close to 30 years now. A wing will make a difference depending on the speed you are traveling. Try the wing on your car for a few laps and then try it without. If you can feel the difference or the lap time is different, that should give you an idea if it works for you or not. Remember, whether or not it helps you comes down to the track, the car setup and how you drive. Personal preference is up to you. I have done many things that was not in tune with the rest of the flock and have done well.

I wonder if the high position of the front wing robs air and stalls out the rear wing causing the handling imbalances.
@jeffbryner53554 жыл бұрын
If you got to run a front wing you might as well run a sprint car and take you but to dirt oval lol
@Jessgo33-9 жыл бұрын
I think the wings will help the car corner better while keeping its speed up. Take Sprint cars for example, they wings help the cars keep their speed in the corners. Anyway very good video. :)

Front wings have been around for a while. Might be new here in the States, but not new in general. I'd like to see a comparison to a front wing that mounts over the hinge pins vs. this shock tower mount. But I know AE doesn't make a front wing kit so..not sure how that would go.

+stressball yes according to gurney the bennefit of a smal vetical flap is more to the downforce than causing drag.

I think on the straight these will keep you car stable but most tracks are more turns there for it's a waist . I rather loose .001 on a straight then loose .005-6 on turns. Just me .

I have a Mugen mbx7r eco, and many people at my local track,which is medium traction and very large, are running front wings on their 1/8 buggy. Do they make these themselves, or do they use 10th scale front wings?

@SilentlineProduction6 жыл бұрын
I think it will work but that particular shaped wing won’t because of how hi the back of the wing is it probably interferes with the air that meant to hit the back wing. Maybe if that front wing had angle but was more flat it would work better.

Brain storming on this Old video, a nose wing placed in the wrong location can create a wake or eddy that can (not always) make for less down force on the rear wing. Clean air is always ideal for an airfoil. Another thing, more downforce on the front of your car could unhook rear. Try shit out, make tons of test laps. Move the wing around. Im curious to try a custom tall side board wing with little effective surface area on the belly, for a verticle stabilizer effect with out the drag and down force. Also added down force anywhere may warrant a spring increase or a ride height adjust? All this rambling based on years of sprintcar and midget seat time.
@Shane-Singleton9 жыл бұрын
What is this snake oil!!?? ;) There is theoretical merit. But I think it'd be very track situational. Tracks with a lot of turns and less full power straights would be ideal for this, methinks. For the airbrake reasons you mentioned.
