My grandfather had something similar. I don’t know if this is correct, but he said it was used by shop clerks… ink well, pen well, wax sealing supplies, etc. in the holes on top and the day’s bill of sales slipped in below. My grandmother had appropriated it for her sewing room and kept scissors, etc., in it.

The holey wood box is to hold your fresh eggs so they don't roll around and break each other. If you look closely at the cook's work table in the Downton Abbey series, you'll see a much longer one in the center of the table, ready for her to grab them for the dishes she made. Home-grown eggs do not require refrigeration, as their natural coating seals out air. Commercially raised eggs get washed, and so they must be refrigerated to retard the oxidation process.

And what about the space below the holes?
@pbonniejean

@@billieboybuddha4238 I think its just a riser, to put the eggs high enough to be easily in reach of a busy cook on a cluttered work station.

I love this content because it kind of reminds me of my grandparents. They were farmers and made everything from scratch. They sneered at "towny air bread" as they called it and made fresh loaves every second day or so. They had one Jersey cow for milk and cream and when we turned up we would get the home made bread with of course home made jam and clotted cream and wow, was it good. Dinners where a joint of beef or lamb and quite often corned beef silverside. The next day's lunch would be salad and bread and cheese and the left over meats from the day before. The table always looked like a fabulous feast no matter which meal it was. I remember eating bowl after bowl of just beetroot as my grandmother was preserving it. Strange thing for a kid to eat but was so good I couldn't stop. I must have been about 9 years old at the time. They lived the same way in the 80's as they had in the 40's and it was a joy to see.

Colored Easter Eggs - I think that wooden box with the holes is used to dry dyed Easter Eggs. And the open space beneath the holes is to catch the colored drips. I know its not Eastertime yet but I'm pretty sure that is what that wooden box is for.

I made a long comment about this too. Czech kraslice for instance require multiple applications of colored wax. The shells are first emptied, so are very delicate and they need places to rest in between various applications. The box part underneath would be great for storing stylus, wax, candles, etc. Images of artists doing this today show them using egg cartons but those weren't invented until fairly recently.

I have learned a couple of new recipies and how to make a simple wood stool so far by watching the both of you. I will state again I have only found your channel just over a week ago. As to the wood being needed we mainly use wood to heat the house. Before my health went to pot I did most of the wood caring , cutting and splitting.. I thank God I was using a chain saw then eventually a wood splitter as I aged.

Dear Youngsters hello. This time of the year is hard for me because it is my birthday and also my Sweet husband was killed in action at the start of WW2 and a week after I was told he was gone I gave birth to a baby boy, he passed on Valentines day. So Feb is hard for me. Wonderful memories but sad too. War is terrible, and the loss of one's family is even more horrible. Please all cherish your loved ones because we don't know how long we may have them sometimes they are with us just a few minutes and then gone forever. 👵🙏

That wooden box with the egg shaped holes... I got to wondering if that has something to do with painting eggs, Easter eggs. To me it looks like an artist's box with paints, inks or tools to be kept under the top part. Initially I wondered if it had to do with candling eggs, shining light through them to see if there are embryos, except it would be dangerous to have a candle in the box part. I Googled images of various egg painting techniques and didn't get many images of the actual equipment used. I am of East European ancestry and I know there are a number of different ways to make very complex Easter eggs. The Ukrainian pysanky are created in a series of dye baths but the patterns are created by applying heated wax with a stylus. I think the little box might be fantastic for some of this work. There are other techniques from other regions which also have to do with applying colored wax for decorations. The box area of the artifact in question would be excellent for storing wax, styluses and other tools. The holes in top would allow the artist to decorate a number of eggs at one time. Czech "kraslice" is done with blown eggs -- contents blown out through holes at ends of eggs -- thus the shells are very delicate. Wax and inks are used to make kraslice and it would be great to have a safe way to protect the eggs as they are being decorated. Another possibility for the box is china painting in the Victorian era. If you Google Easter egg decoration, there is quite a selection of porcelain eggs that were painted in Victorian times. In short, I am thinking of techniques that might require drying times (ink, dye, china paint) or elaborate work that decorates one side of the egg and then the other. The kraslice technique can use different colors of wax so the eggs would need to be shelved between colors. Pictures of some modern work shows artists using modern egg cartons to store their work. Well, DUH! Except, when were egg cartons invented?

Very interesting info my dear & i'm of the same thoughts as you there. I too, have some Eastern European, Central European, Baltic & Russian ancestry, so i know much, regarding Easter egg painting/decorations. I spent some years in Eastern Europe, the Baltics & Russia, I also did some googling and i've found very similar info too. Take care.

Could the wooden box be an inkwell holder & underneath stores the paper? I have seen several wooden inkwell holders & they have similar characteristics as the one you have… love your videos (as usual)

Good job to Ron’s Dad for doing such a nice job on the spoons. I think anything someone makes of their own design is very special, indeed!

That is a perfect Valentine's dinner! The food looks delicious! Thanks for such a fine description of an 1800 dinner. Love both your channels and always look forward to what you will do next.

Ok guys clearly the mystery box is a taco storage shelf. You just fold up your tacos and let them rest in there.

You know.... It could be from an ice cream shop, they could set your ice cream cones in there at the register while you pay for them. And maybe have napkins in the bottom. Just a guess. Thanks

Mushrooms and steak go so well together. Yum! Those all look so good! I really want to try making the cakes though.
