People who killed themselves in the 18th & 19th centuries couldn’t be buried in Catholic cemeteries either. I recently visited a non-denominational cemetery of the 1800s & a woman who committed suicide was able to be buried in her family’s plot but her name could not be inscribed on the tombstone with the rest of her family.

Oh I saw this and could decipher the diary easily as I've taken palaeography courses and British old money. The abbreviated rec'd is "received" so the snatcher received 2 lbs sterling. And the other amount L (lb I don't have the symbol on my phone) was 1 lb. 1 shilling and 0 pense. Love to read old writing and the transcriptions. Great work transcribing that!

Another great chew and chat😊 That yummy onion soup is on my list when the cool weather makes it to louisiana. The house is awesome, so happy for yall! I do costuming as a hobby and yes, that extra boning in your stays makes a diff. Each bone adds up, making u thicker but makes look thinner.. its crazy. Lol. Stomachers are period for that type of gown, so that would help. I don't know how much seam allowance the dressmaker left, but Your friend might be able to let out the seams a smidge each side of the bodice and you wouldn't notice any adjustment. Also, depending on the construction of the cape back, there should be seams that could be let out without any notice of adjustment. Anyways, hope it all gets worked out for the wedding. Love yall❤❤

Greetings from UK. Pre1970s currency was pounds , shillings and pence. 12 pence to a shillling. 20 shillings to a pound. A gold Guinea was 21 shillings. So 3 3 4 is three pounds 3 shillings and 4 pence. Recd is received. Barthlw is bartholomew. Geo is George etc. The bodies in Hampstead cemetery were covered with an iron grill to prevent body snatching. Keep up with the great videos.

In Tom Sawyer, there's a scene of a body-snatching, involving the local doctor, Injun Joe, and Muff Potter. Muff and the doctor got into a fight, and Injun Joe stabs the doctor to death. Tom and Huck are watching, and take off. Muff Potter is jailed for Injun Joe's crime, because Muff's an alcoholic and Injun Joe took advantage of that. When Muff comes to, Injun Joe tells him Muff had killed the doctor. Later Injun Joe is trapped in the cave, which is sealed off. When Tom tells the authorities that Injun Joe is in there, the townsfolk rush to the cave to try to rescue Joe and bring him to justice, only to find him dead of starvation. Muff was freed from jail.

Suicide was only decriminalised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in the 1960s. I don't think it was ever a criminal offence in Scotland.....But there are still countries in the world where if you survive a suicide attempt, you will be prosecuted and possibly incarcerated. My late partner took his own life many years ago (in Scotland) the Mass was the coldest most impersonal service I've ever had to attend. Sadly, while not an offence, there are still many priests who have little to no sympathy; and see it as an offence against God.

I do wonder if the measurements were taken correctly- mainly by someone else (not self done) and over stays. But since Justine has worn historical dress for so long, I assume she knows and would have done this right. It’s really odd, because a dressmaker of that calibre should absolutely have made certain it would fit! I’d also return it if it wasn’t right!
