When the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, among the thousands killed was the one man who may have known more about Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda than any other person in America: John O'Neill.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/don....
This 2002 FRONTLINE documentary chronicles John O'Neill's struggle to convince the FBI to pay attention to the threat posed by Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. The former head of the FBI's flagship antiterrorism unit in New York City, O'Neill had investigated the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Africa and the USS Cole in Yemen. For five years, he led the fight to track down and prosecute Al Qaeda operatives throughout the world. But he was a controversial figure inside the buttoned-down world of the FBI. O'Neill's critics contend that his personal failings proved fatal to his FBI career. His supporters, however, believe his main failing was refusing to conform to the standard-issue FBI mold.

I just watched the looming tower this week. Both of my parents had worked in the towers. My mother for American Express, my father for marsh & McLennan. When I was a young kid and my dad’s office was in the towers, I hated it and had nightmares about that space - because his office was on the 98th floor. On 9/11 I was in college in Philly, I was at Wharton when we watched live - a tv was dragged into class - after the crashes but before the buildings fell. That day, my dad was meant to be at a managing directors meeting on the 98th floor, but by then his office was at 1066 AoA where the monument wall is. I was following Chandra levy’s disappearance so while getting ready for class I happened to see the first plane crash live. I didn’t think to check on my dad until I was at class and it was significant enough that we were watching live news. I called his office and was told he was there - for a meeting. From before the towers fell until about 3 pm when I could connect to Manhattan again from Philly I thought he was dead. I mean, the first plan hit the floor he was meant to be on. He couldn’t have lived. But he was late to that meeting. The planes crashed before he was even downtown from Penn station. So he lived. Thank god. But between my two parents, they mourned over 500 people, at least 100 were actual friends. They kinda went nuts after. And then my mom died of cancer just a few years later, so I never got to discuss it with her as an adult, with perspective. ❤ Love to everyone affected directly or indirectly. ❤

@@jennifermcgoldrick6323 Oh, wow!! I’m so, so glad both of your parents survived that day unscathed, at least in the physical sense. I can’t imagine how the abrupt and unexpected loss of that many people effected them. I think I would’ve went a little nuts, too. Especially to lose those that were their friends. Unimaginable. I was 24 years old and living in Minneapolis. I didn’t personally know anyone who was killed that day, but it definitely changed my life. I’ll never fully get over what happened and what those poor people went through. Ever.

Loyalty? I'm sure his wife and secret girlfriend for years would disagree. What's more, if someone is this profoundly dishonest in their own life, it's easy to dismiss them when they are adamant about the truth elsewhere. There's nothing heroic about someone who torpedoes the believability of his own critical work simply by failing to keep it in his pants.

@Madronaxyz 2 жыл бұрын
@@Brianbeesandbikes the fastest way to transfer money from the middle class in the working poor is to spend it on the military. When the middle class has more money, they spend it on things like college education, transportation, housing, that create more middle-class jobs. When the wealthy have more money, they spend it on things that do not make many jobs. Gambling in the stock market makes almost no jobs compared to buying a house. Buying a mink coat creates many fewer jobs then paying for your clothing. Military spending makes more money for the 1% for two reasons: 1. A huge proportion of military spending is spent on developing new technology. When you talk about investing in new technology you were talking about the stock. Almost all the profit from the stock market goes to the 1%. The other way that military spending makes money for the 1% and not money to circulate in the middle class economy, is that the jobs in the military are very poorly paid. (I will also take a moment to note that not only are military jobs poorly-paid, you're likely to die while you are a military employee--in other words, the very worst type of job.)

The Diplomat who kicked him and the rest of the FBI out of Yemen, kept them from properly investigating the attack on the USS Cole, now teaches at an Ivy league college. The govt has clicks, no doubt. ONeil's story also brings to light that the alphabet agencies do NOT work together, they are snobby competitors. The CIA and the FBI had the Intel and manpower to prevent 9-11. The govt has known about the tension between the agencies since 1985, when the traitors were discovered in the FBI, CIA, and NSA, but the traitors were able to stay in the shadows, because the agencies were too prideful to think one of their own could be a traitor, and the others didn't share Intel to expose them. Embarrassing how these agencies have operated. Probably still this way.

Or people who just aren't as smart or creative as the people they supervise, which prevents them from seeing what their reports are trying to tell them. The saying, "Those who can't do, teach," is incorrect. A good teacher is an invaluable resource. However, I do believe in, "Those who can't do, manage." It's a job that people who are just the perfect balance of uselessness always get.

Who got off scott free murders and liars like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Guliani, and a slew of military and news media those paid off who have not one tenth the character that O' Neil had. Where does We The People think the 3.2 trillion dollars that was reported missing by Rumsfeld the night before 9/11 went....the money was to pay off the corruption that Deep Throat spoke about to Bob Woodward who investigated Watergate...... Deep Throat said the corruption goes everywhere. O'Neill was used and then eliminated in the very crime he was investigating..

John would only let this man serve him when he was working and would bring in important figures at times where they would use a back room to meet. He still has his business card to this day. He said even he knew John had been trying to sound the alarm on Osama for years. I then got into this rabbit hole and its sad realizing that the man I met lost a friend at the end of the day. Its not just about a conspiracy or crazy story, real people who lived during that time and knew this man lost a friend, a dad, etc. I love our country but I hate the corruption in our government. John never deserved to die that way and fought for what was right. Rest in peace brother!

All it takes is one man in the right place to change history. I can't imagine what America would be like without a 9/11, where people would have just listened to John O'Neil. However, I do have reason to suspect that the planes just expedited a tragedy that could have happened in the future. Fire Commissioner John O'Hagan pointed out the corners that were cut by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey during construction would make the buildings deathtraps in the case of a major fire. I can genuinely see why the truther movement started, the ridiculous controlled explosion theory, the way the buildings came down was due to engineering faults, and anything dealing with the Rockefellers means they have a lot of hush money and deep connections to suppress information and avoid the courtroom.

This way while fingers get pointed saying the FBI should have known about the threat from the MidEast it reinforces the govt. story that the terrorists caused this. Those buildings came down from a planned demolition with thermite only the military has access too. The steel beam were shipped to china three days later so they couldn't be tested. And it was prearranged for Bush to be up in the air so the chain of command to shoot those planes down couldn't be given. John O'Neil is an American hero imo. No wonder Picard and Bodine didn't want to give interviews. Two peas in the same pod!!! Such a shame these two were in positions of power at this critical time. I personally think John is a genius and the FBI was super lucky that someone as gifted as he was graced their department.I just hope that alot of people watch this video so that they can appreciate what a true patriot looks like. Rest in heavenly peace, friend. 🙏

John P. O'Neill is what I do call a real hero ... He should have won a posthumous medal because of his devotion to his job and his high intelligence vision. Unfortunatelly it looks like ego matters were stronger than protecting people. John's ending is a irony of faith. Rest in Peace Sir.

I think his story was swept under the rug after the events because it was imperative to our cohesion that it appeared as an attack from invaders, not a slip up in chain of command. Is it justifiable? I don't have an answer for that. Cohesion was very important in repairing the nation after the attacks.

Honestly it would've been interesting what would have happened if John wasn't in that building that day and how he would've acted against Al quaeda. He definitely would've gotten back into service in some agency and fight them. I bet then the Afghanistan war wouldn't have been around for twenty years, let alone that it took ten years to get bin Laden. I never heard of him before but I definitely have the upmost respect for this guy. He didn't work for the FBI for money or power. He literally did all of this to help and save people. He probably could've acted against the Attacks. RIP.

If people would've not played politics with the lives of the people of our country, we may have been able to stop 9/11 from ever happening! All the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authotity staff and the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives that day and the thousands of people who have lost their lives since do to the toxic air at Ground Zero would be alive today! My heart aches for them, their families and friends! We must put PEOPLE BEFORE POLITICS so this can never happen again!

His colleague's father was right: all too often, it's the mavericks who have the understanding and insight lacking in those who are more "by the book". Flair and instinct aren't something something taught and are often augmented by sheer hard graft but you either have it or you don't. He did - they didn't - but their petty resentments had the ears of the decision-makers. Brief cases don't go walkabout of their own accord. Their petty gamesmanship caused America to go to war and he and the other people of the Twin Towers were first to pay the price..

In 2001 I worked as a vendor onsite at a major international corporation across the United States from New York City. Just a by-the-way here, this corporation had headquarters in a building that was right next to the twin towers. The evening before the event (on September 10), I had stopped by the cafeteria to grab a bite to take with me as I left for the day. The cafeteria was surrounded on 2 1/2 sides by windows - half-way up the walls to the ceiling. Most of the day employees had gone for the day, and workers were in the process of of hanging some heavy dark navy drapes along all of the windows. I chatted with them and I asked what was going on, as this was something we hadn't seen before. They told that the CEO of the corporation, KC, was coming to this site the following day and wanted the drapes up. Now, he had been there before, and had spoken to the employees but had not done it this way before. But I thought, Okay, whatever. Maybe he will be showing a film. Well, we all know what happened the next day. And the CEO, KC, was in the city by the evening of the 10, which probably makes sense, and he was stuck there, away from home in NY until planes were allowed to fly again. And also, the building that housed the corporate headquarters sustained damage and they were not allowed back in the building until the next spring or summer. The heavy drapes, the CEO visiting almost unannounced, it all may mean nothing, or it may mean something. I suspect we will never know.
