Slick Rick released his first solo album in 1988 titled The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. It hit No.1. on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop charts and was one of the first hip-hop records to go platinum. Rick was preparing to record his sophomore effort, The Ruler’s Back, but three weeks of recording sessions were followed by five years in jail.
In prison, Slick Rick proved himself a model inmate, and in 1994, he was granted work release to record his third album, ‘Behind Bars.’ However, after just six months, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service informed Rick of their plans to deport him. All work-release privileges were ceased, and authorities sent Rick back to prison. He served his time dutifully, though, and even released his third album, the aptly named Behind Bars. @@footballfan8275 Yeah, that's not how our legal system is supposed to work in America. We're supposed to have arrests, trials, and sentencing, not summary executions. Beyond that, only a few crimes merit the death penalty. So, "jaywalking" "resisting arrest" "vandalism" "selling loose cigarettes" etc. aren't capital offenses. It doesn't make sense when the cops kill anybody for those kinds of reasons, whether the people were breaking the law or not. George Floyd wasn't killed in the process of committing a robbery. And even if he was, you don't get to just brutally murder criminals in your custody. It's animalistic to continue to attack a person once they're helpless.

Your dad is a genius! How the hell did he know Slick was from England??!! He grew up in a tiny town in South London called Mitcham. I’m also from Mitcham and have lived here my whole life. Slick Rick is the most famous person to come out of Mitcham and therefore he is a legend in the Mitcham community. He comes back to visit once in a while and makes sure to visit the hood to show love.

I'm so glad you mentioned Dana Dane. Cinderfella is one of my favorites of the genre. Not only was it a clever retelling of a fairytale classic, as a Midwesterner who grew up skating it was fantastic to hear the moment Dane's skateboard turned into a Volvo. It could have been a bike. Lots of kids have bikes. The lyrical choice made me feel more connected to the story and like I understood Dane on a deeper level as a person.

I do too. My dad never gave it a chance before he died and I wish I had been able to listen to it with him. He LOVED music in general. My mom would listen to it when we were in the car for instance with no objection. I still prefer clean rap pretty much!

Unfortunately, growing up in the hood those were the things my parents were concerned with, and the discussion that needed to be had at an early age. 1988 was the peak of drug dealing and gang banging. We were exposed to those things as early as 8 to 11 years old. Most parents didn't know how to effectively teach us how to stay away from that lifestyle so they did what most parents do, tell you scary stories of misfortune. Disclaimer: I am not making any excuses or condoning anything! What I'm stating is my personal experiences growing up in the hood when your peers were trying to pressure you to “be down”! Now that I'm older I can reflect and understand what my family was trying to accomplish. This song was a message to the youth during those times.

Classic album by a true pioneer! Slick Rick’s second album though “The Rulers Back” is impeccable. His rhyme flows and storytelling goes way ahead of it’s time on the second record. I really do enjoy these videos! Keep them coming! Slick Rick to me is underrated. He is known as one of the greatest storytellers in hip hop and he has one of the most timeless flows & deliveries of all time. He flows effortlessly on a track. This particular song is on the album 'The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick which is one of the most classic hip hop albums of all time. Definitely a top 25 hip hop album but you can even argue it being a top 10 greatest hip hop album of all time.

This is such a GREAT idea. Like connecting all of the dots through history. Speaking of samples, I'm only like a third way in (so this may be mentioned later), the piano riff is sampled by a great funk artist, Bob James, which is THE most sampled artist in hip hop from his song "Nautilis". The piano riff is also is also in Ghostface Killah's "Daytona 500" You and dad should maybe consider starting to watch short documentaries/interviews. I watched one with Bob James and the great 9th Wonder where 9th Wonder pays respects.

I from the bronx and slick rick use hangout 2 blocks away from my crib and the story that he told on this song happen 2 blocks from my house on 183st and university Ave. These types of story use to happen all the time in the BRONX. The bronx was wild back in the 80's and 90's.
