When Maxwell first came out in the 90's, he was hot and his voice was really at its prime and so silky. A little over ten years ago, he had to undergo airway reconstruction surgery which affected his full singing ability, but he still sings beautifully. He gave a shoutout to Millennials for reviving his career with that song, "Pretty Wings" off of the album, blackSummersnight. Maxwell is one of my favorite R&B singers. You should definitely listen to the studio versions of the songs.

As a long-time lisitener of Maxwell and familiar subscriber to your channel, this is one artist that you cannot skip. His Tiny Desk was a reference to his music and for people who already know and love him, for you to really appreciate his music (and I believe you will, you should listen to his works separately). I recommend Ascenscion and/or this Woman's Work. Honestly his whole first album is such a transcendent dream of true neo-soul. Big time Maxwell fan and I think you will be too
@you_can_call_me_T4 ай бұрын
I kind of disagree about Tiny Desk being a good way to be introduced to artists. I think a couple of these songs you would've LOVED if you'd heard the studio version first, like "Bad Habit." Some of the best elements of the song weren't captured in this scaled down version, but those of us who already know it can get into it because we know the song and because of the nostalgia attached for us. But i would've loved for you to have heard the actual version first. I think Tiny Desks are best appreciated by people who already love the artist/music.

I agree. I've been introduced to some artists through Tiny Desk and enjoyed it, but their studio-recorded music doesn't sound the same. Typically for me it has been a bit disappointing hearing the studio versions after the Tiny Desk versions due to the sometimes overproduced nature of studio recordings.
@you_can_call_me_T4 ай бұрын
@@jamedraa8472 Oh man 😆 Sometimes it's like they instinctively talk over the best/key parts of a song lol. I know that not everyone enjoys music in the same manner, but I personally feel that a piece of good music should be taken in as a complete work of art, at least the first time you hear it. Talking over it is like seeing a painting for the first time but with pieces of tape covering certain parts. I would love to see them, at least every now and then, listen to a whole song completely uninterrupted, then listen a second time, sharing their thoughts.
@you_can_call_me_T4 ай бұрын
@@ijustneedmyself I can definitely see that. I think another factor is that some of these Tiny Desk artists have decades in the industry and there are a few whose vocals just aren't the same anymore and they adjust their songs to fit their current abilities. His falsetto was off here, and you could tell it was something overall going on with his voice by the rasp when he was speaking. Of course you would have to have heard him speak before to know that lol. This Woman's Work is one of his most popular songs and it's almost entirely him singing in falsetto. Between that and how emotional the subject matter of the song is, it's no wonder he didn't perform it here. I saw him live at the Kennedy Center in DC last October and his singing voice still sounded perfect. My girlfriend thought he was lip syncing until he started ad libbing. Just listen to 'A Woman's Work'! Again, many artistes aspire to this level of talent. I did not know about his vocal surgery, but this would explain why his falsetto sounds a little different, but still amazing! 3. Tiny Desk is recorded in Washington D.C. When the band was playing Da Butt from the '80s & he commented about the crowd liking Go-go music. It's a subgenre of funk & originated in D.C.

Maxwell’s falsetto is actually very unique. It has changed over the years due to vocal cord complications. You should go back & listen to his raw vocals on MT Unplugged or any of his albums before 2007. He’s a treasure.

Maxwell has a very distinct voice. He was pivotal in neosoul/rnb back in the day. His falsetto isn't as clear as it was but to get a true appreciation of his vocals, you have to hear his records. Woman's Work and Pretty Wings you would really enjoy the studio versions. He did MTV Unplugged live and it was awesome.

Idk if you guys are familiar with Go-go music it originated from black musicians in DC. The bass/snare/drum beat added with the last song was go-go if yall delved deeper into that sound i think you would really enjoy it

I think he premiered Pretty Wings right after MJ died('09). He surprised everyone when he came out, and all of his was cut off and he dedicated the song to MJ.❤❤❤

He spelled “R-O-C-K with you D.C.” since the NPR tiny desk office is in DC. And Maxwell was one of the artists that popularized the “Neo-soul r&b” sound in the late 90s & early 2000s. Maxwell’s known for his falsetto & his vibrancy. Maaan when he performs live he puts in a show. He will sing & dance freely all night. It’s crazy to think he’s in his 50s

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, Maxwell touched on Go-Go music which is specific to DC and I guess the entire DMV area. Love that detail.
