I appreciate your evolution from more modern "backpacking" to a more rustic and fundamental approach to being in nature. Love the pack.

I am 61 years old, I live in a wilderness area that goes Arctic half the year. I have backpacked all my life, and I was a bush-crafter but didn't know it! Because of my age, even though I am in good shape, I have to go as light as possible. Sometimes I head out for a week at a time, two days away from the car. So when a pack setup impresses me, it has some gravitas. I do the BWCA, the UP and n WI. Have fun! G

That is a very nice load. However, I would never underestimate the importance of a light source, a fire is not good enough, that headlamp whether you use it or not is well worth the extra weight.

enjoyed the video. one thing I'd like to say is there is a lot of name brand and high end equipment here and for the novice "brushcrafter" I would like to remind them not to get caught up with name brands and high end equipment. get what you can afford and make it work yes the higher end items will last longer but I often find people especially beginners get caught up in brands... otherwise great set up.

love the looks of the pack. I've always favored the "traditional" or "bushcraft" look and feel. Did you have a rifle/shotgun tied to the bag in the opening segment? Curious if there's an opening in the side pocket, to use it like a sleeve. thanks!

nice video, nice pack. I've had my eyes on this for awhile, but the one thing I do like about today's contemporary packs (besides lightweigt), is the ability to do multipoint adjustments while walking. I re-adjust often and that is one of the downfalls with traditional bushcraft packs. but it is a beauty! btw, think you got a big enough roll of duct tape there? :) thanks for the review!

Military ALICE packs really are awesome and practical, the large has to be used with the load bearing frame, but still comfortable even with 30-40 lb readout, the medium alice pack is also a good choice, a little smaller than the large and can be used with/without the same frame as is used with the large. Depending on how much weight you plan on packing in the medium, both being military issue surplus, very tough and water resistant nylon material, available in od green and some medium are available in woodland camo pattern.

@AdirondackBadger7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying. Is the load out in this video 25 lbs or were those revamps after you published this?
@URBANSHTF7 жыл бұрын
After this video. I stopped carrying the axe (which I love but I'm not felling trees) and large tarp and a few other items that I rarely use on longer trips. The saw and knife seem to do the job in regards to wood processing and I replaced the large nylon tarp with plastic painters sheet. It's still a work in progress but well worth it.

11OCT18 I bought the Royale Junior pack about a year ago, after purchasing the Royale and the Royale Mini. Nearly $1200 all told for these three packs. As I was prepping the Junior for serious use the canvas flap tore under my fingers just opening the flap. When I called to arrange a return I got the run-around. At no time did this company say anything remotely resembling, "Oh, sorry to hear that. Send it in and we'll get you sorted." I had to ship the pack to them at my cost, and although I was assured I would be reimbursed for the shipping costs, I was not compensated for the return shipping. Not only did Frostriver decline to repair what was obviously rotten canvas, they also blamed me for the damage, saying that because I modified the pack by removing the Frostriver leather patch on the flap and removing the stitching from the map pocket inside on the flap, I caused the tear. As if removing some thread affected the quality of the canvas. Frostriver also thought it intelligent to close their letter of refusal with the following gem: "apologies that we will not see eye-to-eye on this, but we just may not be the right fit for you." This pearl was signed "sincerely" by Stephanie Anderson. At what price-point can you reliably trust you are purchasing a quality item backed by a good warranty? I have made many purchases from Frostriver other than packs. How can you trust a company that refuses to repair or replace poor materials and workmanship? I had yet to even take the Junior into the field, in fact never got it out of the house. Now I'm glad I never got the chance as I have no idea what might fail next. I will never make another purchase from this terrible company again. Poor customer service is one issue, but poorly crafted gear and a refusal to have any honor whatsoever is a whole different thing. Add to that Ms Anderson’s attempt to blame the consumer and excuse poor quality and the result is the loss of customers. Steer well clear of this company. Your hard-earned money is much better spent with a company that recognizes the value of repeat customers and the difficulty many have in financing Frostriver purchases. They appear to offer quality and good warranties, but the truth is they offer neither. I have no alternative vendor to recommend, but literally anyone else would be better. Go with a company that appreciates your custom, not one like Frostriver only interested in fleecing the very people keeping their lights on.

Not for me. I've been a bushcrafter for fifty years, and one thing I learned early on is that bushcraft has a lot of complete nonsense associated with it. Rucksacks versus backpacks is part of this nonsense. Nostalgia is no excuse for a bad back that may haunt you for life. Trust me, Daniel Boone would have tossed every last bit of his equipment in the trash had someone offered him modern equipment in trade. Especially had someone offered him an external frame backpack that transferred all the weight of his gear from his neck and back to his legs. Anyone who wants to carry outdated gear that's four times as heavy as it should be, and that just gives aches and pains for what should be a pleasurable experience, is free to do so, but I'll keep bushcrafting with modern gear, and stay comfortable.
@RM-nj3dz5 жыл бұрын
James Ritchie how does modern bags transfer all the weight to the legs. Go purchase an anatomy text book and read it, study it. Your comment is a load of horse shit. Having any type of load on the upper body is always stabilized by our Erector spinae. This large muscular and tendinous mass runs the length of our spines and is the main spinal stabilizer. With that written I’ll state this again-any load placed, carried or picked up will activate the erector spinae. If your back hurts with this style of bag then you probably need to strengthen your erector spinae and rectus abdominis. Stretch your hip flexors and stop being an overweight-Fatass..
@HandsomestCrusader5 жыл бұрын
Robert MacIntyre see i thought something was off with his comment the first time I saw this video and read that a month or so ago. Supposedly with modern framed backpacks, specifically with the waist belt, most of the weight is transferred from your shoulders and on to your waist/legs. A number of people try to simulate a frame by stuffing one of those small plastic trash cans into the pack. But what I don’t understand is how this backpack doesn’t distribute the weight since it has both a sternum strap and waist belt like modern packs do and older packs don’t. I’m not a scientist or doctor, so I definitely need to look more into this kind of stuff. But if these kinds of packs really do ruin your back I wouldn’t think they would be in business too long or this design would be sought after
