Its really nice acsept that the wax doesn't last very long there's no frame. I found it to be a little rough to carry compared to a framed pack but it is well built and looks great.

i find myself not being able to carry large packs because i always try to fill them and end up bringing WAY MORE gear then i actually need then end up regretting it because my pack is so heavy lol if im just doing a scout i just stick to the Duluth scout pack, forces me to cut my kit down to the essentials! awesome pack though and awesome video! thanks for sharing this with us!

Got to say, I prefer my 1964 Swiss army “salt and pepper” backpack made from cotton and nettle fibre, the nettle fibre giving it its speckled green colour. Leather straps are made by local Saddlers, and are stamped with their names. It may not have all the bells and whistles, like axe loops, but I could always fit my own, although I probably won’t on the one I have now as I’d like to keep it original. It has a thick leather (as is all the leather) bucket bottom, and the canvas is really,really thick. There’s no way anything is going to tear it! I also have the matching bread bag that fits over the top of the lid. If you find one in good condition to begin with, treat the leather, it will be an heirloom pack. What i’d really like to do, is get another and swap out the steel buckle and fittings for brass, plus fit extra leather straps for axe etc, to my own design. A nice pack can be bought for around £150, in my humble opinion, it has 10 times more “cool factor” than an overpriced modern “instagram” pack, and, despite the straps not being cushioned and it not having a hip belt, it’s amazingly comfortable. Check them out!😁

I have a diy made waxed canvas bag that I've been using daily for almost a year. Approx 15oz canvas and sewed strips of puzzle eva foam from dollar store into shoulder straps. Mixed 50/50 paraffin/beeswax, used old grounds donated from local coffee shop to get kaki and then used shibori pole dye technique with brown hair dye to get tiger stripe. Sewed thin micro rubber soling material into base to make waterproof bottom. Been doing lots of studying on next pack. I believe most cues on the frost river and duluth packs come from the old boy scout yucca packs made from diamond company. There is a minor change or two but side compression and top side flaps as well top cover flaps all same design. If someone can't afford should just buy a used scout pack off eBay and give it a try. Find myself wanting to load this pack with tons of groceries and supplies from run into city so will be making custom frame to accomodate the design. Like your review and thanks for your time and effort on it. Best regards, Mike

A thought: When you pack the thermarest, which is arguably the lightest piece of gear close to your back and taking up a lot of space there and you have the haversack next and the water and axe which is arguably some of the heaviest stuff way out front - you kind of are moving the weight away from your core with mostly just the wool carpet and poles and ground cloth to counterbalance a bit, but even so it’s still out there - I would think that would create a bit of an outward pull and imbalance and put more stress on your shoulders and torso muscles? Nice kit!
@mynineridesshotgun11 жыл бұрын
Hi Goose, I have only taken it a couple miles at a time and it has been pretty good. It is in no way as comfortable as a modern pack but it isn't bad. The padding on the shoulder straps works and the sternum and waist straps add support. The pack is narrow in design so that you can bushwhack without getting hung up on branches. One thing to watch out for is keeping the weight close to your body -- pack it taller rather than fatter. Thanks! -Chris

Nice looking pack, it's interesting to see the heavy vintage style and then see you pull out all modern kit that would go inside any heavy campers pack. That must weigh 45lb

Very nice pack!! Its holds more than I would have ever guessed! Im glad you showed this video with everything you were able to carry in it with room to spare! You got me interested in that pack. Its a little on the heavy side for its size at 7 lbs. but I understand due to the canvas. Im sure it will hold up for years to come. Also those are made in the USA and that's a huge plus to me!! Thx for sharing!

Thanks man. It's been a great pack so far. I'm not sure of how many liters it is. The main storage area is 23"x15"x8" plus the front pockets, small side pockets with straps, the pockets behind the front pockets, and the map pocket.... so there's a good deal of space. Frost River has good customer service so you may get some more info if you contact them through their website. -Chris

I've heard conflicting reports on the size. I would suggest trying to find a couple load outs like mine and comparing the stuff that I and others pack in them vs the gear that you have. Also, when I was deciding on whether or not to buy mine, I looked at the dimensions on their website and made a replica out of paper grocery bags and tape so that I could see how big it was. Hope this helps. -Chris

Thanks man! You definitely will not get the same level of comfort as a high speed low drag bag with fully contoured straps and extra padding. That said, the model pack that I have here does have some good padding and as long as you balance the weight out intelligently, it's pretty comfortable. Using the sleep pad up against your back as I have shown definitely helps -- prevents it from being lumpy.

I have not tried using the trash can. I have though about getting a pack basket mostly because I would use the basket as a stand alone with the option of putting it in the pack. That is a awesome setup you have. I have been wanting to snag me a good waxed canvas bucket style bag to add to my gear. How would you rate the comfort compared to a internal frame pack?
@SolidusVictorium12 жыл бұрын
From the FR website "I.R. Dimensions 23″h x 15″w x 8″d, actual volume 2760 c.i. Expanded volume, 4968 c.i." In liters that would be approx.: 45 L, 81 L respectively. If you're wondering what actual and expanded means, actual volume is determined purely by the dimensions of the bag (23"x15"x8"=2760ci), The approx. expanded volume is what you can actually fit into the pack. It's greater than the actual because the pack isn't a definite shape and can expand a little, etc. Had to email FR for that.

If you don’t need a lift time pack your right you don’t need it. But it’s 100 cheaper than the comparable Duluth pack. If you want. A pack to last a year or 2 of regular use 100 is okay but if you want one to last you 10 plus of 3-4 months of hard use it’s not anymore expensive.
