Conquering one challenge now onto the next! The world is closing... What do we do? Where do we go?
www.sailingnandji.com/
This video was filmed in March as the global covid-19 pandemic took off. We left Thailand on the last day of our visas and at this stage the Malaysian border remained open. India and Sri Lanka had closed and Indonesia was threatening to do so. It was important we reach Langkawi as quick as we can so we would not be stuck at sea...

/ nandji
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are up early with the sunrise and head out under sail, close reaching the final 15 nautical miles to Langkawi, Malaysia. Countries were beginning to drastically implement new laws and regulations and us sailors are the most vulnerable. We are hoping to reach a safe harbour before Malaysia shuts the border and we are not exiled at sea. This were changing daily but everything was very new back then and were hopeful that this would not be for long. We continued on with our plans to prepare to leave to Indonesia and we rushed around collecting packages and preparing Nandji for the Indian Ocean. The ladies provision the boat ready for 6 months of sailing and we are waiting on our visas for Indo to be ready and then we are off!
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

Good on you, for trying to stay a step ahead of the virus. Great to know the duty-free status for receiving items. The provisioning is crazy. I'm holding my breath, and crossing my fingers waiting to see how this goes. If it goes sideways, at least you are in a pretty part of the world. Look forward to every episode.

I was pleasantly surprised to be awake this late and get a notification. Knowing videos are a bit behind real time, if that is where you guys ended up being "stuck," I wouldn't complain. Looks amazing and the provision prices.... WOW! Just one of those buggies would be hundreds of dollars in the US. Hopefully there is good fishing as well. Yeah, I'm one of those weird people who actually watches the whole video before posting a REAL comment 😂❤️🤙

I know that in SA, ALL Borders are closed and Richards Bay roadsteads are clearly visible from my flat. There has been absolutely NO traffic by sea now for a long time. With borders being closed, there is NO movement either in or out of a harbour. It would be a tragedy for you to sail across the Indian Ocean, only to be refused entry to the yacht club in Richards Bay. In addition, the local Game Reserves are not currently admitting anyone and this looks unlikely for the rest of this year! I met the owners of Brick House who sailed out of Richards Bay early this year. They managed to gain admittance to Hout Bay Yacht Club on the southern tip of the country. They needed to be hauled out at the Royal Cape Yacht Club but there, they both were infected with Covid and after 22 days in ICU, Patrick passed away.

We have been paying close attention to countries regulations across the Indian Ocean and this year we have cancelled any hope of making the crossing. We are still in high hopes of sailing your way but for now it is safest to stay put. It was horrible news learning of Patrick’s passing, we learnt a lot from him and his videos. Cheers for the update, stay safe, stay sane and keep the froth
