Creating More Art in Less Time: 5 Time-Saving Tips For Increasing Creativity

Many years ago when I was taking classes in pastel painting, the instructor surprised us with a “limited time, limited palette” session. We could choose ten colors to work with, and I think the timeframe was 20 minutes (not very long for a painting). I was sure I would flop, but to my surprise I did the best work of my life. If I remember correctly, there was enough time for four 20-minute sessions, and I ended up with four beautiful paintings. I think it’s because the ticking clock forced me to get out of my own way. No time to intellectualize or agonize over my next step, had to work on instinct and quick eye work. It was very scary and kind of exhilarating at the same time.

Thanks for sharing your tips from your experience. Recently I just started exploring mixed media and collaging in particular. I have a small journal I use and find myself overwhelmed where to start and these tips to get yourself organized and a timer I think it will help not be so focused at what to do but get you moving. “Let’s just make art!” Also, I come back to your channel because in addition to great art your laughter is wonderful and just automatically brings happiness. 😊

For most of my life my creative space wasnt welcome. Thank God my husband now hates the mess i make, but he recognizes its important to me and has made every effort to allow me that creative space. The area i need big help now is the organizing part. I get too distracted or inspired to work.

Thank you for showing the simple way you sort colors! Warm(reds, purples, oranges),cool(blues, greens)and neutrals(black, white, bronzes, metallics). And those further broken down to a drawer, a box, and an envelope. I have been going crazy trying to sort my papers by color🤪

Great collages! I really like the idea of making smaller pieces at a time, Im thinking of it as a 'reverse masterboard' 😂 Make smaller pieces than consider using them for a larger one, or not! 😊

Oh yes, I had many years of having to take everything to the dining room table and put it all away again. Yes, it did cause me to put off creating quite a lot. Now I have half an office, and I remind myself of when I didn't have anywhere permanent. It would be nice to have the whole room to myself, but I'm still grateful for what I have.
