On this episode of Bachelor on a Budget, we make a Frozen vegetable Stir Fry. Frozen Vegetables can have more nutrition than much of the fresh produce you buy at the store, as it is flash frozen. Frozen vegetables require virtually no prep, and can be quite a bit cheaper if buying in bulk. In this recipe, we skip defrosting the frozen veggies first to avoid sogginess.
Recipe:
500 Grams of Frozen Vegetables
2 tbsp of Oyster Sauce
1 Teaspoon of Soy Sauce
2 Cloves of garlic (minced)
1 tbsp ginger (minced)
1 tbsp Coconut oil (Or vegetable oil)
Sliced Green Onions (Optional garnish)
Instructions:
1. Heat up a large wok or pan on high heat. Once very hot, add coconut oil till melted and glistening in the pan.
2. Add Frozen vegetables to wok and gently toss in wok till largest piece is almost cooked all the way through.
3. Add ginger and garlic, and toss to avoid burning. Then add oyster and soy sauce. Garnish with green onions (Optional).

I made this in my instant pot (saute option, high) while watching this video. Had to forgo the oyster sauce (didn’t have any in stock), but added a bit of sesame oil (for flavor, alongside coconut oil) and a generous helping of coconut aminos (soy sauce sub). Tasted great!

If you haven't mentioned it before on another video, the easiest way to peel fresh ginger is with the edge of a regular metal spoon. Scrapes the skin off incredibly fast.

Awesome tips!! I’ve been wasting fresh, untouched veggies from being exhausted after work due to 12-14hr days in the construction industry.... but that will do that to anyone. I have discovered utilising frozen veg + you’re favourite Chinese food for example (Mongolian Pork) for 2-3 nights and just veg for the remainder of the working week gets me 5min meals..... for around $45!!!! ZERO wastage and some veg is better than no veg... right 😋

I know that frozen veggies can be more nutritious but they're so bland in a stir fry compared to fresh. I only use frozen when I'm in a pinch and don't want to go the store. Fresh, even slightly wilted, tastes far superior.

Help! Where did a go wrong here? I hope you can bear through this step by step to help me trouble shoot how this went horribly wrong because even though I thought I followed your directions to a tee from “heat pan up on high heat” before adding 1 tbsp oil (I used vegetable oil), I got the same splatters everywhere of hot oil that I’ve gotten every time I’ve attempted stir frying frozen veggies….except this time, I had studied your video and recipe at length first. There’s two areas I think might’ve caused this. First. I don’t have a wok or deep pan so I had to use a deep large skillet as it was all I had to work with. Unfortunately it was a non stick one (non Teflon I think, it’s a very light Gray unlike my Teflon dark gray scratched up smaller skillets i use to make eggs.) I thought the non stick deep skillet I used might explain why the oil didn’t want to cross the center and coat it (without me using a baster) or possibly didn’t allow it didn’t get hot enough? But how then has my mom successfully used the same non stick skillet i had such terrible results with, make stir fry veggies whenever she’s visiting me? I’d asked her for a deep pan or something to use as a wok like the deep Teflon pan she uses to make stir fry at at her house; hers looks very much like the one you used in the video. These are steps I followed from your video: first I put the skillet on high heat and let it heat up (or so I thought.) Then I added 1 tbsp vegetable oil. When adding oil, I noticed oil didn’t run across & coat the pan. It left an empty circle in center in center and went around the edges no matter how many times I swished it back & forty. I finally used a baster to brush it across. I followed your directions not allow frozen bag to thaw & basically took it out of freezer, cut it open & dumped it in to the oil coated pan. Sadly, it was frozen in a circle and came out kind of like a ball of giant ice encasing tiny cut up noodles and veggies. Perhaps I hadn’t laid it flat in freezer? (I have limited space in there.) As soon as I added the frozen vegetables, hot splashes of oil went everywhere-all over me🤦‍♀️, across the burners, counter, basically everywhere. What a disaster. It’s badyvakly the same result ibe always gotten using frozen vegetable whether there in a circle of ice or thawed a tad bit first. The ice ball wasn’t breaking down at all so I ended up having to dump it out into a big bowl and break it down with a knife before adding it back to the skillet. I’d appreciate any thought on where I went wrong. 🥲😔🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Don't have THAT much heat... don't have that much oil... and heat up and then remove the pan and check with one piece of vegetable and wait till the oil is cold enough to put in the rest of the vegetables and the heat up on the still hot stove stirring often untill it's not that wet, then probably lower the heat again after the vegetables get hot... I don't really get this about the high heat.. everyhting is relative? But I guess you have used trial and error and found this out by now. 🙂

for those who are lazy, you can get an oven proof dish poor in the frozen ingredients, put in pre heated oven at around 200-210 for 5 mins, take out then add all the rest with a table spoon of preffered oil stir about and then a few tablespoons of water or vinegar etc ! only 2 short trips to the kitchen and then one to plate it when its cooked, depeneding if you have meat too can vary etc ;-)

I wonder if putting the frozen vegetables in the pan without oil first wouldn't make things better. Let the water in the vegetables evaporate a bit, and then add the oil and the seasonings. Might end up with less mushy vegetables.
@MarlonDoll
@MarlonDoll 7 жыл бұрын
+gnostie interesting theory! I think the surface area of the hot oil helps it evaporate faster. As water evaporates pretty quickly in hot oil. But if it cools it down too much, then it would get soggy. But we can test!! But I think a really hot wok that retains heat, oil, and smaller portion will do the trick. Too much frozen veg in a small pan will cool it down to quick.
@gnostie
@gnostie 7 жыл бұрын
I think you are spot on with this observation. I do my frozen veg in foil, in my Foreman grill, and it's true that when the vegetables are more or less comfortably spaced, the result is better. I never get soggy veg either way, and I have never used oil so far. I'll try a bit of oil when I get my next batch of frozen veg and report back.
