Interesting as bananas probably produce one of the most fruit pounds per square foot than any other fruit "tree". So many flavor varieties and all are way better than store bought. Whats better they produce their own fertilizer with all the pups and leaf growth. Get a machete and the work will be quick and easy to chop and drop.

The problem is all those pounds have to basically be eaten at the same time if you want it fresh. Otherwise it’s great. I usually freeze or give away a ton.

I agree they are Easy to grow, harvest and chop and drop. I add grass clippings the more the better. I harvest when the flower dies off or when I see a little color on the top of the bunch. I hang them inside in cooler dryer air conditioner temps. They start to ripen at the top of the bunch And we cut and separate the hands and bring them to the kitchen. They will last for 10 or more days as we snack on them. Much better tasting and lasts much longer than anything from the grocery store. Plus what we don’t eat we freeze for smoothies and also freeze dry and keep for long term storage.

I’m in the PNW and grow in pots as I have to move indoors for the winter. Growing that way requires frequent watering, but separating the pups has the side benefit of some extra $ as they sell for $15+ each or make nice trade fodder with plant friends.

I have 4 varieties in a corner of the yard, not spread apart like you have. it's easy to keep a moist area. large trees just cut up high and cut again down low, no need to fell a tall one like you mention. store bought is no comparison. just like most other crops. keep at it Paul.
@julieten2774 Жыл бұрын
Yes, bananas can be high maintenance, but a lot of things are. Mango trees need to be kept pruned back so you can pick the mangoes at a nice height off the tree and so it will have a good yield each year. It seems everything needs pruning or kept up so to me it just depends on what you want to do, prune a banana or something else. I grow bananas and personally I don't like how the leaves turn yellow because I think they look messy, so I have to go out and cut the dry and yellow leaves off, but that's just me. When I cut the pups out I give them away. You're lucky your neighbor is okay with you going into his yard and cutting them back.

Just saying about only producing ounce in not true in my case but I don’t know a variety or how it taste. Hopefully this year. I do nothing to the plant but feed it none soap gray water from my kitchen sink. Very low maintenance for me here.

Nice video! Yes, bananas are inexpensive in stores, but you only get one variety (Asian stores may have more)! Here, in Bay Area, Zone 9B, it takes anywhere from 18 to 24 months for banana trees to fruit and many times by the time the fruits ripen, winter begins to set in -- so its a challenge to grow them. But still, they are one of the easiest tropical fruits to grow here.

I LOVE my bananas, I have some dual purpose Thai but yes, that part is a lot of work. I can not grow anything but dwarf varieties due to having to cut them down after they fruit, so strange was just talking to someone on the phone about this issue with wanting Ice Cream bananas, but not wanting to cut them down in my small yard. We might need some of the shade though for our annuals if the heat keeps up. I got a great serrated shovel that I love it is great for digging up the corm when it gets too big, helps so much! Would love a pup off both of your bananas Paul I am in Palm Beach County.

Bananas are currently inexpensive and available in stores, but I believe that is going to change in the next 2-3 years and they will be hard to get and expensive when the world wide food famines start. Next to Avocados, Bananas are one of the most valuable fruits for a food source due to their higher calorie amount than other fruits which are mosty just water.

Yes, I think we should be prepared, especially if we live in South Florida and can easily grow our own bananas and avocados. And you're right about them being highly nutritious.

@@johnbanach3875 I used to live in Central Florida, and it's a blessing for such a great subtropical growing climate. The Downside is it's all easily destroyed with one Hurricane. If I lived there again, I would build an Earthship style tiny house in a mound of dirt with only one open face of greenhouse windows facing south. No A/C would ever be needed, and when the Hurricanes came jist board up the South facing side of the house and your 100% Hurricane proof.

I planted an unknown variety, i haven't tasted before. This baby is so tall lol and for its size, it makes tiny bananas and i don't recall the fruit being that small when I first took a pup . I made the mistake of dividing the pup to a different location before it fruited for the first time. I had to dig it up and cover the location with a cardboard box to deprive it of sunlight. After the initial dig, some would come up and I would repeat the same process. Now none has come up in over a month now and i plan on planting lacatan variety at that same location. One thing is certain, banana is alot work.

To stop Banana plants from spreading out of an area, you can just simply dig a 3 ft deep hole whatever diameter you prefer (3-4 ft diameter is good) and line the edges with pond liner or and old vinyl swimming pool cut to size. Don't put liner on the bottom, only around the sides. Then fill the lined hole with good organic matter rich soil and compost. Banana roots don't grow that deep and they won't grow through the pond liner. Essentially, you're just creating an extremely large pot in the ground that contains the Banana plant roots. Then you can just let them grow into a large Mat of Banana plants without having to thin the new plants and they won't spread to other areas.

First of all, there's no such thing as a banana tree (or a papaya tree). They're not trees. You can look that up. It's not that they're a lot of work, but they do need a little more attention and care than a fruit tree.
