The Alphonso mango variety is around 500 years old at least. It was originally called Apoos mango. The name was then changed to alphonso during the reign of the Portuguese viceroy of India Alphonse de Albuquerque who was very fond of the Apoos mango, and would ship batches of them to other dignitaries and kings around the world. The variety is still also known as Apoos mango among locals in India.

Wrong information. Alphonso mango was brought to India from Brazil by a Portuguese named Alphonso. Indian locals found it easier to call Alphonso as Apoos. There was no Alphonso or Apoos in India before his arrival. They are one and the same. No name changing happened.

Thanks Paul and Alex for taking the time to make this exceptional video. Very interesting, the history of these Indian mangoes growing in Florida. The only Indian mango I have is Mallika. I was seriously considering top working it at one time, was getting so frustrated trying to figure out when to pick it but when you get it right, it is up there with the top mangoes. I think it's better than Lemon Meringue and other citrusy mangoes, it just has alot going on very complex. If you have one, give it a chance. The tree is consistent producer in my yard.

Indian mango is also grown in the Philippines, is usually smaller, about the size of a small to medium apple , 30 yrs ago my friend went on vacation to Florida, broght home several boxes of big mangoes, I'm sure it was the Alphonso variety, it was the size of a small papaya. South Africa also grows the Alphonso variety, they are big and very sweet. Another variety of mangoes is Philippine Carabao mango( kinalabaw) it is the most popular mango in that country, it is shaped long and yellow when ripe and ready to eat, we now get this type in Canada from Mexico, it is called Atulfo Mango.❤love🥭
@miket.9450

I respectfully beg to differ, Atulfo is nothing like the Carabao Mango, the ones in the Philippines are larger, juicier, less fiber and way sweeter plus you do not have to wait for it to ripen close to being wrinkly like atulfo, for it to taste sweet & eat...tho' atulfo is said to be from a Ph mango it's not even close. The Carabao-PH mango is on the Guinness book as the sweetest mango in the world not sure if another one already surpassed it 🤓

In a away its good that Americans and indeed the rest of the world havent caught the taste of Alphono yet else we Indians would never be able to afford these already expensive fruits. There are people who eagerly await the arrival of thse mangoes every year in April - June which is the season. Apparently Alphono mangoes need proximity to the sea to develop well. As you mentioned, its the soil and weather that makes a big difference to the Alphonso production. Am truly impressed by your knowledge of the mangoes. More than even most Indians would know. Also, people could try different practices in their farming or personal growings, which for examples are, Electroculture, slow drip feeding water, wormycastings, adding vocanic ash into soil, use compost tea etc etc, please do you research and readup and look upon these techniques! Thanks, good luck 👍 😊😊

In commercial status, Any name can be given to any product especially if the name is artistic. Alphonso, Alfonso, Atalso or Ataulfo from India ,Philippines or Haiti, or Mexico Those are the SECRET OF THE TRADE. You can taste the difference Indian mango you ate in Mumbai is vastly different from the one you bought from Walmart. You control the temp, age and maturity of the fruit.

You should try Chausa mango. They grow huge. An Individual mangoes sometimes grow upto 2 kilos, it was named after the sher shah suri from the suri dynasty who overthrew the Mughal empire in 16th century. Chaunsa is from a names "chaunsa" village in Eastern India. The soils of India is black soil in the Deccan plateau.
@TheHayyer
@TheHayyer Жыл бұрын
What Pakistanis call Chausa or Chaunsa is not a huge mango, rarely more than 3 to a kilo, usually 4. What Pakistanis call a Chaunsa is probably the Fazli, which is huge and is the last variety in our season. Chaunsa is best in Central UP, deteriorating as it grows Westward.

Can we grow Imam Pasand in South Florida. Also Malgova
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms Жыл бұрын
Yes Imam Passand fruits fairly well in Florida but the fruit tend to develop unsightly cracks here. Malgova we haven’t found in Florida yet unfortunately. They tried to introduce it 135 years ago but the tree froze below the graft and came back as something else that we still call “Mulgoba” but it isn’t the same mango.

kesar means Saffron, the names resonates with the bright orange color of the pulp, and exotic, aromatic flavor like saffron. You can smell the flavors in kesar. Although Alphonso (Aapus) is the King, kesar is Queen! more Indian flavor and bright color.

Fantastic video. I wanted a true Indian mango that did well here, so I went with Kesar. I was torn between Kesar, Sonpari and Imam Pasand/Alampur Baneshan. Any reason why these other two weren’t in the video? I think Sonpari and Imam Pasand are considered good performers in Florida.

I love mangoes so much that I named by movie company as YellowMango Entertainment....the thing with Alphonso mango is that it does not even grow successfully in non native parts of India. Even Basmati rice which is mainly grow in Punjab is not cultivated very much in south india. Maybe we need genetic engineering to make it grow outside of india. The most common mango in south india is called Baiganpalli or Benesaan and this is the rockstar of mangos and you must have this in states!

Native name for Alphanso is "HAAPHUS" alphanso has a distinctive sharp "S" like shape on one side and a semi circle.on the other, has very thin skin and no fibre strands in the pulp. The pulp of ripe alphonso is dark orange and no where near yellow if its slighly yellow then its not alphanso. Alphanso is indeed without doubt THE KING of all fruits
