This is helpful, but what I'd love more insight on is specifically unlocking low ranges in fry scream. For some reason I can't do it without it sounding super breathy and losing the distortion. It also starts hurting at times, meaning I'm probably not getting it right yet. I think a video on low fry screams would be really helpful- have you done something like this somewhere?

Yes, I've recorded two tutorials on this topic. One is more "classical" fry scream and another is about something that can be described as a fryish hybrid, but still closer to fry scream than false chord. A mistake that a lot of people make, is that they try to lower the sound way too much, instead of lengthening their vocal tract more and more, gradually. It's about learning how to make fry scream with a slightly lowered, and then dropped larynx, more "O-shaped" mouth, lifted soft palate. It usually needs to be done gradually because aiming for the darkest sound color possible when voice isn't ready for it, messes up the placement and the sound becomes breathy, whispery or constricted and fry disappears. You will find more info in the mentioned videos. The titles are something like low scream tutorial and how to lower your fry scream. You will find them easily. I would place the links but I play a gig soon.

Do you think you could do a video on warming up. Like what warmups do you use when you are first starting to use your false chords for that morning/afternoon. I have trouble warming up my false chords even with really relaxing my throat and my true chords will slip in. I feel like I should have some sort of warmup with the false chords without using my true folds before I jump into pushing more with my diaphragm

Usually kargyraa throat singing helps in this case. There's a kargyraa playlist on the channel - you will find there also tutorials about using it for practicing false chord. Here's a warm-up video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKfIhp6grb-meK8 At 12:08 there are some exercises that I use for warming up my false chord. Here's a growl tutorial with the exercises that can be also used as a part of a warm up by those who have already learned how to growl and just look for a warm up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHOraXewetqNh9U Usually the exercises serving for learning how to scream with a specific technique, later become a part of a warm up.

I love that you have a lot of tutorials for fry screaming, I will definitely try this method out. The machine sound is vocal fry, right?
@sibilaextremevocal
@sibilaextremevocal 2 ай бұрын
I explain it in the video - it's more like a mix of soft, light voice and vocal fry. A "regular" vocal fry, from what I've tested my self and with my students, makes the vocal folds connect too firmly, which in the end leads to constrictions, instead of the fry noise or fry scream.

@@sibilaextremevocalYes I see now, my bad, just for my curiosity, do you know which cartilages are involved with this method? It sounds very unique and cool
@sibilaextremevocal
@sibilaextremevocal 2 ай бұрын
I have no idea what cartilages are involved, if any, sorry. The creaky "broken machine" sound can be described also as a very soft, light subharmonic singing, because if I produce a bit firmer, louder version of this sound, a pitch appears and it's low (around B1, I guess). I'm getting some weird fry noise, but it doesnt sound as compressed or, crackly or whatever you want to call it, but it's much louder than just normal fry.
@sibilaextremevocal
@sibilaextremevocal 2 ай бұрын
It doesn't need to be louder, at least it's not the aim, and if it occurs it's more like a side effect. The sound should gently crack and get gradually more compressed, partially by the work of the larynx, and partially because of increasing the engagement of breath support. If the sound seems to be just a louder version of a regular vocal fry, then it's probably not the sound that you are looking for, but it's hard to tell without hearing your attempts.

Dosłownie 3 rzeczy mi powiedzieli żebym poprawił i to wystarczyło.

hey! been watching your videos for a while. I do vocals for a band but i’ve realized for some reason I can only do false chord during practices because fry screams become impossible after i’ve done false chord. also if i do just fry screams for a long session then they also become difficult after a while. Have you heard about people having difficulty doing a fry scream after false chord screaming? Or have you experienced this yourself?
@sibilaextremevocal
@sibilaextremevocal 2 ай бұрын
Hello! I heard about it many times and I went through it my self too :D Usually, it's because: 1. The false chord placement isn't precise enough and the true vocal folds are too active and they can get tired, especially if the produced sounds are very loud, forceful or breathy, 2. The air pressure is too high, for instance because of too high volume, 3. Breath support doesn't work 100% efficiently and whether the abdomen is too stiff or the core muscles don't engage enough, there's a lack of balance. Sometimes it's also related to the fry scream itself - if the technique is far from perfect, it may be much harder to produce the right sounds, especially after a long practice or practicing something as intense as false chord. In some cases, also after practicing high and very high singing in a forceful way, fry scream seems to be much more difficult to produce or it feels as if it has disappeared. I went through all of that my self and I heard similar things from my students or some people that send me their recordings on email, Facebook, etc., and usually it's related to the things that I've mentioned, and once they are fixed, it's easier for them to achieve a consistent, sustainable and comfortable sound.

It would be good to take a look at the whole technique and make sure that the technical foundation works properly. I've practiced with vocalists that in some cases were screaming for years, sounded great, but it turned out that for instance their support isn't working 100% correct, they tighten their jaw or other body parts too much, they use too breathy or hard onset, or placement of their screams were sometimes "slipping away" and we needed to improve their precision. Once we identified the issues and started to woek on them, everything was becoming more consistent, comfortable and they didn't have to change the way how their vocals sounded (I mean that they didn't need to start sounding like a different person, they did the same thing as always but in more precise, effective way). I will also use my self as an example here. I practice vocals since 12 years, went a lot of times through various singing coursebooks, took quite a few lessons and spent thousands of hours on vocal activity, but during a Complete Vocal Technique course that I signed up this year, the instructor noticed that I don't pay enough attention to what is happening with my lower ribs area when I sing higher notes, and because of that I flex the navel area too hard, too early which makes my throat much tighter than I need to hit a note, which wears out my voice faster. I also modified a few vowels, opened my mouth more, added some twang and all of a sudden I could nail the song in comfortable way, although it was still quite demanding, especially coordinating properly all of the things that I've mentioned. I know the vowel modification, twang, breath support, opening mouth in a way that can remind of biting something, but for some reason it turned out that they didn't work 100% correctly, and a couple of small tweaks helped me to feel and sound better while singing higher notes.
