We are confident enough in FSD v12 to take it to NYC! How well do you think FSD did taking on the wildly varying traffic conditions of NYC?

Without doubt, the best example I have seen of putting FSD to the test. For me, these are the conditions that FSD has to prove itself, not on wide open roads which are well signposted and have minimal traffic and people. If Robotaxi is going to happen, these are the conditions FSD needs to face and succeed in, because it will be in the city's that Robotaxis will mostly be deployed. I drive in London, and you have to make decisions that I believe FSD would struggle with. As you could see when entering NYC, people walking into the road and not obeying the right of way. What will a car with FSD do? Probably sit there until there is a clear path. When you're driving, you may have to nudge forward just to remind the pedestrian that you are there. If everyone obeys the signs, it makes it easier for FSD. Problem is, they don't.

Exactly; and that is just the beginning; eventually FSD will have to be trained to thrive in places like Bombay, Pattaya, Teheran, etc.

It gets frrustrsting only seeing an American FSD perspective. That isn't this channels or these commentators fault. It's necessarily going to be American biased. It's just unfortunate we aren't all on the same page in different markets. UK and European roads are a big test.

@@joemcdonough7509 I agree that NYC is the ultimate driving challenge, but it's only because the tough stuff happens more often there. The same difficult driving scenarios happen in any big city during busy hours, just not as often as NYC per hour driven. Of course S.F. and L.A. have lots of psycho drivers. L.A. even has a racing culture on its many urban highways. What Waymo has learned in testing all over the U.S., including NYC and Boston, currently in Wash D.C., is that all driving is a combination of San Francisco and Phoenix, meaing crazy city people with awful traffic and bad infrastructure plus chaotic emergencies and tons of pedestrians and two-wheel vehicles, and suburban driving that has its own unique challenges like lots of parking lots, but a lot fewer problems per mile driven.

Glad I found your channel today!! I've been trying FSD for the 1st time myself the past few days, in 2 major cities: Boston and NYC, and drove from former to latter. Basically, it is 'not ready for prime time' in either of those 2 cities in any kind of dense traffic. I've had to intervene quite a few times as it did, or tried to do, some sketchy things or didn't know what to do!!! Going on the highway is a different experience however - mostly smooth sailing with really no interventions. And that's where I think the value really is, as it cuts down on driving fatigue (once you get over the nervousness of AI as your pilot). Regarding city driving, perhaps it's the street planning and construction, as well as the evolution of human driving, that needs to improve, for this to work. And speaking of the human element - it plays a large part in close traffic/ city driving, ie. eye contact and waving someone ahead, or seeing that they're not looking at where they're going, etc. These are things that are not currently possible with FSD, at least yet.....

8:34 The more convenient driving becomes, thanks to FSD, the more people will be motivated to drive, until the equilibrium of inconvenience is re-established. The real issue has been designing cities for car dependency rather than for people. Cities around the world, particularly in Europe, are improving quality of life, pollution, health, and safety by making alternative modes more attractive. The autonomous car will always have a place, but perhaps not the dominant one you imagine in decades to come around city centres.

Great video. I disagree with you that they should have started with NYC. It's a fairly common and good practice to tackle simpler version of a problem in engineering (and I'm fairly confident in most fields) in order to minimize risk, increase probability of success at each stage and shorten iteration period. The latter allows for faster feedback cycle which is super important when exploring a new territory.
@BlackTesla

That's a fair point, but for a system that is trained on video of traffic conditions. Collecting data in the most complex scenarios makes it much easier to handle simple situations. FSD didn't need to iterate as many times as it did to the public. If Tesla went from Navigate on Autopilot to FSD v12 imagine how much more impressive it would've been for all and again having that complex data even if captured in shadow mode just makes the car more capable.

In the tunnel entrance scenario , I think it would have figured out that it needed to shift leftward, but you were concerned that it might get stuck and took over rather than giving it the opportunity figuring it out and I understand that considering that you had traffic behind you. However, that scenario is one that is ripe for training using synthetic data scenarios rather than real world ones. Tesla could easily generate a bunch of driving scenarios in their simulated environment and then populated with various types of traffic cone diversions so that the car can learn to navigate them and then add that to the collective of knowledge. Training also being gathered by real world scenarios to expedite expertise.

Fair perspective. However, there are consequences to actions and if I let the car figure that out the police that were all looking at me might have something to say about it. If it was a closed course and no consequences I would let it do its thing. I think the issue there was that it was required to cross multiple lanes at almost a 90 degree angle which goes against what it knows which is why it was confuses as well imo.

Rollout is based on geography and vehicle config, staring in California. The trial seems to be going out to people who haven't bought and have the newest cars to incetivize them to buy...but that's just what we've seen.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!! If it can’t succeed in NYC/BOSTON/PHILLY traffic and road conditions, FSD won’t succeed. I get all the same errors just going through Tip O’Neil tunnel. And all the variations of road conditions. Like you said. They SHOULD BE IN NYC, PERIOD. LA/Frisco is like a playground track! Major eastern seaboard roads are like a mountain bike trail. And everyday is different. I disengage half a dozen times or more on my 40mile trip into Boston. Again thank you. We need Tesla in a Model S/X in the city creating the baseline. Great video!!

you need 12.3.3 assertive mode!
@BlackTesla
@BlackTesla 2 ай бұрын
Why? Assertive just means more speed based lane changes and a shorter follow distance. In the city the cars are moving faster than the car is going and there are only 2-3 lanes so that would do nothing but put us in danger being closer behind the wild cabs who make abrupt stops all the time. I think people think "assertive aka Mad Max Mode" is going to drive like an NYC taxi, and that's just not the case.

9:00 ish: you are so right, Tesla should aggressively gather driving data in every city, but I wish they’d get more data for suburban and rural areas, too, so FSD could be able to accelerate gently except where required for politeness and safety, and stay at most only a little over the speed limit when configured to CHILL.

5:19 Amen! I wish Elon had waited until it was a little better before the big push. Though it did save me 200USD because I was planning to subscribe to FSD for a month in April, to use while traveling to see the eclipse.

I'm also doing eclipse travel, and I'm making the hard assumption that I will have no opportunity to get any supercharger use on that day because of the crush of all the traffic.

@slowercuber7767 2 ай бұрын
@@concoctionary I came across a traffic study about a year ago that seemed to show very little overall traffic increase for the 2017 eclipse. This was at odds with what I witnessed that day, especially with traffic leaving Nashville going east. I too am concerned about it, so I’ll probably travel to it either very early in the morning or the day before.

Yeah it’s crazy that they’re releasing v12 on a wide trial without ANY tutorial or basic best practices guidance for people who have never used it or even thought about the state of the system.

Typical engineer mindset. They think regular people will be as excited as they are and overlook the “minor” problems. When regular people find any kind of error, they will freak out and never try it again.

Tesla has adopted video tutorials as of late so I suspect they will add them for this. I think they're just so excited they are getting it out there early without considering that part of it.

Abort for system error, which you encountered is if the system's guard detects a malfunction. This may either be some kind of performance issue, where it takes to long to process the data, or it's decisions are out of the set boundaries of sane decisions. Something like the forward collision warning detects a car or an object and FSD decides to gun it, would be such an instance where the system guard would disable fsd and show you red hands.

Good to see one of these FSD videos that isn't just a frictionless drive experience but instead has multiple needs to interrupt and give major driver input. I have yet to experience a comfortable experience of more than 5-6 minutes. And forget turn lanes, mine doesn't see them with the beta.

Looks like the Holland Tunnel (?). I wouldn't DARE use FSD v.12 in NYC anywhere (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx) ... maybe in Queens or Staten Island. Manhattan, Brooklyn MUCH more stressful than DC (which is bad enough).

Aggressive isn't what most people think, it just makes more frequent lane changes and keeps a shorter follow distance. I don't want that in NYC where drivers can slam on brakes at a moments notice 🫣

You speak with apparent authority when exhorting Tesla to stop everything and go collect data in NYC. If what they are doing is not working then how has it improved all across the country including NYC, (see all of Brad Ferguson's cross country vids) It did remarkably well in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Yep, Elon most definitely needs to get his crew into the S3XY Cyberfleet around NYC, to gather training data to feed to their monster cluster. Will be interesting indeed to see how they handle non-verbal communication when things aren’t so clear cut, like Black Van Man there. Big respect for having the courage to venture on in to NYC, BT, and that no wheels or tires were damaged. 👍🙂👏
