Nice video and you have good knowledge of deiceing and if I ever deiced a plane from behind the wing I would get fired. GSX doesn't portray how it's done in the real world shame really. From a deicer Manchester Airport 👍

Hi. Great to hear from a deicing expert. True, GSX isn't doing deicing according to real life procedures, but it is the only addon I know of which actually simulates this. Since winter time is around the corner, all the best wishes! Regards

Let's say that the temperature is 8 °C and it's only raining and there is no snow. Should I anti-ice the wing or only switch on the engine anti-ice and just leave the wing if there's no visible contamination.

There is no need for deicing the wing if no contamination on the wing or no precipitation that might cause a contamination. The on board wing anti ice can’t be used on the ground. So that means you would only use Engine anti ice on the ground.

Hi Blackbox, do you know if the implications of not de-icing are simulated? In fsx, let alone de-icing on the ground you can pretty much forget about the wing/engine anti ice switches and you'd be fine. Perhaps a new video showing the effects of wet/contaminated runway and discussing the use of anti ice in air? Thanks for the great video!

Hi. Yes, ice shedding should be done with parking brake of because if the runway is slippery, the aircraft mights move even with parking brake set.

Hi there, under such conditions, would you usually also switch on eng/wing anti ice on for taxi? I recall the airbus after Start checklist has the item "anti ice - as required"', does that only refer to the deicing vehicles or also to those aircraft proprietary systems?

Hi. Great Question! On Ground you would turn on the Engine Anti Ice when the Outside Air Temperature is 10°C and below and visible moisture is present (i.e., clouds, fog with visibility of 1 mile or less, rain, snow, sleet or ice crystals) or when operating on ramps, taxiways, or runways where surface snow, standing water, or slush may be ingested by the engines or freeze on engines, nacelles, or engine sensor probes. Regarding the Wing Anti Ice: when the WAI p/b is switched ‘ON’ on the ground, the WAI test sequence is initiated and the valves open only for 30 seconds. After that the valve is closed again and the WAI System is not available on ground. Now Wing Anti Ice should not be used on ground, since if there is wing contamination you would have the aircraft deiced with deicing fluid. After Takeoff you should turn on the WAI System only after Thrust Reduction altitude. The bleed demand for the WAI is pretty big and has huge performance penalties. Regards

Hi. Vielen Dank. Typ 1 wird auf mindestens 60°C aufgeheizt und normalerweise zum Entfernen von Frost, Eis und Schnee benutzt. Wenn kein Niederschlag vorhanden ist, reicht meistens diese Behandlung. Dies hängt aber stark von den Wetterbedingung ab. Typ 2 bis 4 werden hingegen eher zum Schutz vor neuer Vereisung/Kontaminierung durch Schnee und Frost benutzt und haben je nach Typ und Mischungsverhältnis eine recht lange Schutzzeit..VG

Some airlines do it straight after engine start and some do it during taxi.

Hi. That can take place at the gate with engines off or at a remote deicing position with engines running.

Blackbox711 so is it going to be abit delay to start the engine because the apu bleed to on for at least 5 min after deicing?

Depends if the Tail of the aircraft has been deiced. If it has been, then yes you would wait 5 Minutes to make sure the excess liquid flows of the aircraft and is not ingested into the apu air intake.

If you have for example 1 Engine running, would you also wait 5 minutes to switch on the bleed air for that engine? Or is the volume of air moved by a main engine big enough, so Anti-Icing fluid is not a factor? Really nice video!

Hi Raven. No you can switch on the engine bleed air straight away after deicing because of the location of the engine inlet. The deicing fluid will not get into the compressor that way. It is however a good idea to do a packless (i.e. packs off) takeoff. Because at high power settings the engine could "suck" up some remaining fluid from the runway when other aircraft just performed a takeoff after being deiced. Regards
