E really like your videos . Very Very good , I was checking my previous company FCOM and my actual company FCOM about Ice Shedding, and maybe you are flying in a more conservative company . My previous company FCOM says 70% of N1 for 5s ( CFM Engine ) My actual company Fcom says “ If ground surface conditions and the environment permit, the flight crew should accelerate the engines to minimum 50 % of N1 at intervals not greater than 15 min. There is no requirement to maintain the high trust settings. In addition, this engine acceleration should also be performed just before take-off, with particular attention to engine parameters to ensure normal engine operation.“ that’s the only difference that I noted. Very good videos !

Hello Blackbox! Great video as always! I just have a few questions regarding the use of Wing anit-ice as it is the time of year again to refresh my winter ops knowledge and there are a few things that I am not clear on yet, if you don't mind. It is to my understanding that WAI is not used on the ground, however, is it alright to use WAI on approach all the way to touchdown in severe icing conditions? On a recent flight, ice was accumulating on the icing pin indicator on approach, so I left WAI on all the way to touchdown. During the rollout, I received a Wing A-Ice System Fault on the ECAM which was to be expected but was wondering if that is correct procedure or would one leave WAI off on approach, regardless of icing conditions? My next question is, I understand that WAI is not used for takeoff and that the deicing fluids provide protection until airborne. At what point would you turn on WAI after takeoff, should it be required (after gear up, thrust reduction, flaps zero? etc.) or is there no set rule to when to turn it once airborne? My final question (more of a curiosity) is WAI is not used for takeoff, however, when calculating takeoff performance via the FSLABS AOC PERF REQ menu or through TOPCAT, I can select Engine+Wing Anti-Ice ON. Are there situations where you would turn on WAI for takeoff or does this more have to do with an MEL where a Wing Valve is set to the open position by maintenance? Looking forward to your wisdom. Stay safe! Cheers!

Watched video well. thank you for detail knowledge. however, i've one question. anti-icing condition includes the condition that is below 10 temperature although on the ground. but why aren't we needed to switch on the ENG anti ice? Do we switch on when only fog or rain , snow, low visibility , like bad condition although temperature indicator shows below the 10?
@Blackbox711
@Blackbox711 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. The definition is at or below +10 degrees Celsius and visible moisture. So if there is no rain, fog, clouds, snow, slush etc. then there is no need for anti ice because there is no moisture to freeze.

One question: How do you determine if there is visible moisture with no precipitation, in a moonless black hole-type night? Flash the landing lights? Wave a flashlight over the visual ice probe (or wipers) and check for ice? Just leave it on when you're in the icing/CB zone in a SIGWX chart?
@Blackbox711
@Blackbox711 6 жыл бұрын
There is a internal light in the icing pin indicator. On the overhead panel you will find the Standby Compass light switch which also switches on the light for the icing pin indicator. In real life you can also take the flashlight to check for ice.

Thanks for your wonderful insights! I'm presuming (with all aircraft types) that anti-ice affects performance/economy, otherwise you could just leave them on all the time where there was any risk at all? Do you not find IRL that in winter you are constantly having to switch on and off, and is this not a big distraction?
@Blackbox711
@Blackbox711 5 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you. Yes, the engine and wing anti ice systems extract bleed air from the engine compressor. Hence the engine becomes less efficient. In winter time the anti ice System is used a lot however it becomes second nature to switch the systems on and off and so I never felt it being distracting.

Hi. Not a dumb question at all. The reason is that at such low temperatures all the moisture has crystallized and either dropped to lower flightlevels or is in such low concentrations that it doesn’t cause icing issues on the airframe.

Meanwhile I have been an enthusiastic Simmer for almost 20 years. The same question I always ask myself is whether these are just work steps and rules that have to be worked through, e.g. with regard to "Icing conditions", or whether there are also real consequences if these are not taken into account. My Majestic Dash 8, for example, packs visible ice on the boots, but if I don't activate De-Ice or Anti Ice, it will crash at some point, or become so heavy that it doesn't climb well anymore - or something like that? I've never let it go :-) Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator
