Great vid, but you can actually arm the approach on the autopilot well before intercepting the localizer course and glide slope. I usually do it when I’m about 30 nm from the airport. That’s also the distance that the gps switches from the enroute sensitivity to the approach sensitivity when conducting gps approaches. Also, just for information purposes, you can find the radio frequencies of all the approaches using the gps. That way you don’t have to pause the sim to look for the frequencies on the map.
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I realised this after, I usually just hit it when the diamond starts dropping
@davidtonks69253 жыл бұрын
Great video Jack. The only things I would have added is that the point at which the autopilot is usually switched off is at 'Minimums', which is listed in the airport information - it's the altitude at which the pilot must go around if he/she has not sighted the runway. The other important point is that the glideslope should be intercepted from below, usually about 2,000 to 3,000 feet. It's a hoot doing ILS approaches at night - one of my favorite flights is flying an F-111 out of Amberley (RAAF Base, Queensland Australia) and flying on autopilot to Oakey (Army Aviation Base), doing an ILS touch and go, and returning to Amberley for an ILS landing - all on autopilot, just magic stuff.

I definitely need to use this for my approach and landings in an airliner because I have a hard time trying to keep it in line with the runway, and I’m always having to bank so severely to try and keep in line, and during my approach when the plane isn’t aiming to the runway centreline and then when I kick the rudder to the L+R it just keeps veering back away from the centreline, it just doesn’t hold it’s heading to the runway

Normally you would disengage the autopilot much earlier, and not 100ft off the ground. Or you could do a full auto landing. But you wouldn't disengage the autopilot so late. Of course this is an option, but it does result in rather hard landings.

Questions: I have been flying the Lear 45 lately using the GPS to get me to he airport and it's working great I usually use autoland, having already pre-programed the ILS runway freq. My questions: When exactly do I switch from the " GPS " button to the " NAV " button , as sometimes pressing it too late I overfly the runway and pressing too early causes my plane to get lost... When should I press the " APP " button What is my best alt. for intercepting the a runway localizer
@Andrew-le7ib4 жыл бұрын
I am not 100% sure about everyhing but you should always enable the plane to ILS at 3000ft
@JacksFSVideos4 жыл бұрын
If you're using ATC, they'll tell you when you're cleared to intercept the ILS. Otherwise, you should usally do it after you've enterered the airport's tower area (dark blue dotted line on GPS). Like in the tutorial, you should hit the APP button as the diamond meets the middle of the PFD (better to do it earlier than later, but spot on is best). As for altitutude, again ATC will always tell you your final altitude before interception, otherwise between 2,000 and 3,000 feet usually. Hope this helps!

@Egobyte834 жыл бұрын
@@JacksFSVideos Ok, I think I was a little too premature in my joy here. ^^ Now I can't seem to get the plane down. I do exactly what you say, got the frequency and heading for the ILS down, put it in the autopilot, I activate the approach vectors in the GPS, switch to NAV, press the approach button, but the plane just stays at the same altitude which is programmed into the autopilot; it doesn't descend on it's own. EDIT: I noticed that when I pressed the approach button, sometimes the altitude LED would not turn off, hence the altitude was still being governed by the autopilot and wouldn't bring the plane down from the set altitude. When it did switch off, that's when the plane started descending. Is there a minimum distance where you need to have done all of these steps for the approach to execute it's function dorrectly? I have saved the flight at 10 nautical miles out, which might be what makes the plane resistant to descent if there is such a criteria in effect.

Thanks for that refresher course! I've been meaning to look that up because I haven't used the ILS in a long while, (been flying helicopters and small, light, vintage, aircraft). However, I noticed that you waited until the diamond dropped to the intersect/capture point before you pushed the APP button. In fact, I always activated the APP button when I was roughly, 8 miles from the runway. As long as your ground altitude is below the top glideslope boundary (usually 2000' to 2500' AGL, and you're less than 2 degrees in pitch or yaw to the localizer, the plane will pickup the glideslope at that intersecting point and the diamond will drop until it reaches the intersection point. Doing it that way left me free to concern myself with other preparations. However, am I using a technically incorrect procedure? Thanks again, Rich
@JacksFSVideos4 жыл бұрын
No it's perfectly fine to activate the APP switch before it reaches the centre, just as long as it's not after. The correct procedure is to usually wait until the diamond begins to fall as it confirms the aircraft has locked onto the ILS correctly :)

Hey Jack, been playing flight sim for some years and I used to do ILS landings however it’s been ages since I played. I thought you had to fly to the vor and pick up the ILS signal before activating it, after activation the plane would turn and line up with the runway. Seen the auto pilot and GPS setup too but everything gets a little confusing when you combine it all. Forgetting the GPS I learnt previously by watching a video that showed fly to the airport and head to the vor program the radio with the frequency and set the course once passing the vor activate ILS and the plane will head down to the run way. This seemed more simple then trying to combine 3 videos unfortunately I can’t find the more straight forward video now for reference

Thank you for this video, I've been trying to figure out on my own how to do an ILS landing with the autopilot, and just about always have to go around and land manually. I do have one question, is there a particular height above ground on short final you look for each time to know when to turn off the autopilot and autothrottle? Or if it depends on what kind of plane, is there a particular one you looked for here in your 737? In FSX I normally fly the 737 for shorter flights and 747 for long haul.
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
There's no specific height, but would be almost always below 100 feet above GL. Just depends on whether conditions, pilot decision-making and aircraft etc.
@rfresh10115 жыл бұрын
pilotguy707 you can turn off the auto pilot at around 500 feet and then land the plane manually...there is no set altitude to turn it off so you can use 500 or 800 or 1000.

And I've been landing manually all this time thinking "Oh an autopilot ILS landing will be to difficult!". Sure seems a lot better than having to initiate combat maneuvers to land at JFK successfully in a 747. I'll update this and tell you how it went when I land my 737 at San Diego. Edit: landing at San Diego went horrible. Whether it was failed ILS approach on me, or the buildings 5 feet below my tail. A landing in LA also went meh, a landing in Tokyo went meh, but I just successfully and beautifully landed a 737 at Portland with ILS at night, gotta admit it’s pretty nice not having to combat maneuver a 737.

i watched your video and did it step by step, and it worked wonderfully.....once...since then the altitude refuses to work on the default 737, but the ils will hold the runway, the diamond never falls which causes me to have to perform a dive maneuver in the last 7 miles before touchdown.....so this feature is very broken, and only works at a handful of airports.........i feel like i was a better pilot before i learned how to use this. also if you look at this feature through a landing rate monitor you're better off manuallly handling your altitude anyways, this method of grabbing the glide slope slams you into the runway at like -400fpm, i can do the same thing manually handling my altitude in and land at -13fpm, in the default 737.

It sometimes takes a bit of practise to amster an ILS landing procedure, maybe try the written version at jfv.tv/flightpath

I’ve noticed on the fsx default 747 cockpit there is no course selector switch on the mode control panel. How do you select ‘course’ on the 747?

You don't need to hit the APP Approach button that late when the glides lope diamond is in the middle. What happens is its alot less smooth and has to spend time homing in on the glideslope. Engaging it as it comes alive is alot smoother.

There is an ideal altitude to intercept the ILS. It's typically ~2000 or less from the runway elevation. Try to look up the ILS charts if you want the altitudes exactly. Or learn how to program the FMC
