Since almost every comment is 2-3 years old, I just have to point out that this series is still doing a lot of good! I don't even use FSX and never have, but I'd say about 95% of the content applies equally well to flying the Cessna 172 in X-Plane 11! The radios are different than in these videos, but that hasn't been an issue for me at all. Great work!

Great video, Easy to follow and made a lot of sense. The only thing I noticed (being a pilot in real life) is that you added flaps before being in the flap range. The white bar to the right of the green bar on the ASI (Airspeed Indicator) is your flaps range. If you deploy flaps before being within that bar it can over-stress the flaps and in extreme cases, it can damage them or break them off. Obviously in a simulator this is not as crucial to note but in real life it is a very serious matter to consider. Aside from that, great tutorial. Thank you! Cheers

You see the red-and-white checkboard radio shack to the right of the runway near touch-down point? That is the glideslope antenna, located at the point where the glideslope hits the ground. The localizer antenna is beyond the end of the runway, along the extended center-line. The glideslope needle flipped just as the plane passed the shack.
@DiCola1195 жыл бұрын
I've been messing this up so much haha. Managing the glide slope and localizer simultaneously feels so delicate of a task. It's hard to correct one without losing track of the other.
@Doofer9115 жыл бұрын
It is tricky and the ILS needles are very sensitive to changes.

quick tip , runway designation is based on the heading of the runway, in this video runway 5 is between 50 and 59 degrees heading (55) , runway 28 would be 280 to 289 heading. its not super accurate but its useful to have an idea of where to eventually be when you're given a runway by approach.
@propwashcowboy66505 жыл бұрын
To answer your question about the PAPI lights and glideslope being a little off is a real world consideration. Approach plates that pilots navigate instrument approaches with will often have a note indicating “VGSL and ILS glidepath not coincident” this just means that the PAPI glidepath and ils glidepath may differ slightly. On an ILS approach in IMC you only go by the PAPI once in visual conditions.
@Doofer9115 жыл бұрын
Ah that's interesting. I was always under the impression that the PAPI lights and ILS guided a plane directly onto the main aim point markers on a runway but that can't be true given what you've said.... very interesting!

Awesome tutorial. Great job! I'm not sure if it was pointed out, but you won't be able to pick up the ILS signal until you're closer to your approach. The signal does not travel far. If you tune the frequency as you take-off, it won't immediately reflect to your destination landing tower.

I notice that on FSX 2006 version that trying to approach a runway that is not more or less a straight in approach from either a waypoint or from the departed airport that the plane most often will not pick up the glideslope. It seems that most of the videos that are on Utube show almost straight in approachs from a far distance. Angled runways from the departed airport don't seen to have good approach setups and cause missed approaches. Any words about this ?

One time I put heading in it flew back to the airport I took off from. The second time it flew over the airport I want to land at. I'm so confused.
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
Are you confident with VOR Navigation? Do you understand the difference between a Radial and it's reciprocal and how those work with a VOR station? If not I would reccommend looking into that, because you'll understand how an ILS works a lot better once you know that kind of Navigation. The time when it flew over the airport, it's possible that you had NAV and not APP selected, or you were above the Glideslope when you activated the Approach Hold.

is it an idea to always fly semi auto when landing when there is a strong wind and you cant get the heading right? By using the heading bug on autopilot you only have to concern yourself about the trim and motor and landing the plane. Ofcourse just before landing you press the AP off. I don't know if people do this, and i am new to flying and simming, so i want to ask you if that is common practise or does everybody land without any AP setting at all, even with strong winds?

Why is that in ILS the vertical indicator slants to the left when the runway is to the right and vice versa? This is opposite to how the indicator works in VOR and I find it confusing.
@Doofer9117 жыл бұрын
At what time does the vertical indicator move in the opposite direction? Just rewatched the video and it behaved normally as far as I could see.
@rossanderson68597 жыл бұрын
Ok it took me a while to figure out what was confusing me, but I figured it out. I was thinking of the VOR too closely to an ADF. The VOR indicator points to the direction your course is from you. I kept thinking it was pointing in the direction of the VOR even when setting a specific bearing. It was just a little mix up that through me off. Thanks for the videos, they've been an incredible help.
