7 yr old video that i just stumbled on. I have been playing FS9 since 2004 and i knew how to program the gps but i never knew the autopilot would follow it. I mainly fly VFR but i am getting ready to go flight school so i am trying to fly actual arrivals. Like the real world pilot said this is a 5* video. Straight to the point. No lame ass music or going off and talking about stuff that does not pertain to the video. I definitely have to go watch his other videos on the GPS. I know this is this is FSX but the GPS on FS9 and X are virtually identical.

Thank you so much for this extremely helpful and clear guide! Can this method somehow be integrated into an IFR flight plan? I have landed, am now sitting at the gate, have just chosen the next destination via GPS as per the first half of your video, but now I want IFR to guide me there (altitude, heading, ATC centres, etc.), rather than relying manually on GPS. Is there is way to integrate this or is the Flight Planner function the only way (which then auto-loads the GPS anyway)? Thanks a lot!

@mattwoodford1820 Жыл бұрын
Anyone know if there is a way to manage the descent using GPS? I'm thinking more for runways without ILS where there is no glideslope to follow? Is there anything in the GPS that you can use to create a glideslope or do you kinda have to guess it using VS and making tweaks to match the PAPI's (which is how I'm bodging it at the moment) can GPS manage the climb/descent rate or is that outside of the scope of the FSX GPS?
@ThomasDeWolf-tt6xd4 жыл бұрын
i have a quick question. when I choose vectors to land the gps gives me a really odd trajectory, it has lots of turns and often it doesn't line up at all. do you know how I can maybe get a better approach without me circling around the airport 5 times?
@JacksFSVideos4 жыл бұрын
The first vectors should simply be a straight line (unless you go past it). Have you tried it at different airports?
@ThomasDeWolf-tt6xd4 жыл бұрын
@@JacksFSVideos I have tried at multiple airports and very often its a straight line and then it lots of turns. so I shouldn't follow the complete trajectory? at 108 mile ranch (British Colombia) it just doesn't line me up at all. It's the exact same as normal FSX, Shift+3 (but some aircraft can be different or not even have a GPS). I do explain the difference in the video, but Load is just getting it ready, but the aircraft wouldn't be able to follow it yet, nor would you be able to even see the line on the GPS, then all you would do is hit activate to see the line etc. as Activate is getting to that bit straight away :)

@JacksFSVideos7 жыл бұрын
Activating the Approach is for when you've saved the approach earlier and you're now going to activate it. You would then need to Activate-Vectors-To-Final as well.
@jamesb19883 жыл бұрын
Ugh, Im so confused. So if you were at crusing altitude when you did this activating the approach would be an instant nightmare as the plane descends at a sickening rate while making an almost 90 degree turn to land on the runway properly. If you weren't at crusing altitude/speed, how did you learn when to begin descent in flight and what speed you should be at when you activate the Approach Hold? I'm so frustrated that I flew for an hour and a half under the impression that the approach hold/auto pilot would automatically line me up properly with the airport runway that I was landing on, instead all that happened was it flew me straight into the ground with the runway at a 45 degree angle difference from my direction. I don't understand what I did wrong... like 15 minutes out I checked the heading of the runway and the ILS frequency and loaded those numbers into my Course dial (in auto pilot box, the knob all the way to the left with orange cross lit up on it) and the Nav 1 frequency COM (and yes it was active). Boeing 737-800, if anybody cares. I don't know why everyone makes Approach Hold sound like it automatically lines you up with the runway of whatever Airport you have selected in your flight plan and all you have to do is just manually set it down at the end. Because that is NOT what happens..

I have tried flying from Gatwick to Heathrow using the GPS and the ILS approach as shown on your video but for some reason the plane does not exactly follow the final-to-vecors route even thought it has been activatrd and can be seen on the GPS as a majenta line followed by the white runway; instead it goes over it. The other routes I have tried using the same method seem to work fine. Could it be that the turn required to land at Heathrow from Gatwick is too sharp? Help woukd be appreciated.
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
I imagine it's because you'd have to turn the aircraft around and make it to the runway at Heathrow in the same direction you took-off, so if you enabled the GPS soon after take-off, it wouldn't be able to make the turn in time, once it got to the start of the line. You would be able to do it if you preset a flight plan to line-up better or used ATC

@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
In real life, pilots use the FMC to create custom waypoints. For many FSX aircraft, the FMC doesn’t work. I’m not sure if you can create custom waypoints in the GPS, I’ve never tried it, but pilots wouldn’t use the GPS at all - only in light aircraft

The GPS in FSX has so much more to offer than that though. I have found how to use it, instead of the in-game chart, for finding VORs and NDBs and Airports in emergency situations because the GPS tells you info about the airports (like runway length) faster than you can click on it in the chart. P.S. The GPS in a couple of the Glass Cockpit aircraft (I think the Mooney Bravo is one) has a much different GPS than the others/the one in this video.

I'm using the G-1000 in 3d cockpit mode. The D-> button brings up the 'Direct to Ident, City, Facility' sub-page. Turning the FMS knob changes the first letter and brings up map, location and course information for the selected ident. At this point I can use the keyboard to enter the ident I want, but the FMS knob just doesn't work. No option is presented mousing over the FMS knob to turn any smaller knob on the G-1000. Hitting Ent brings up the Duplicate Waypoints page, which does not respond to the FMS knob at all.

My question is if im going ifr Should i use that only problem i have with ifr is they will terminate my services for example if they said turn left 150 go to 150 no contact or anything the. They terminate me
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
I always use the GPS when completing an IFR flight, they'll only terminate you if you divert from their course etc.

not a very user friendly sat nav, when I try to enter the airport code the second letter goes lower case and it cant find the uk airports im looking for!
@electric76794 жыл бұрын
It may not work because this game was made in 2007, the airport you are reffering to might of been built after 2007

I know how to get the GPS panel up (shift 3) but where in the cockpit is the actual gps panel in real life I'm curious.
@JacksFSVideos7 жыл бұрын
Actually almost all aircraft won’t have a GPS like seen when you bring up Shift+3, they’re almost all on the navigation display in the centre

Can i ask? 1. What is difference between vectors to final and activate approach 2.what is?/ How to use trans beside vectors
@JacksFSVideos7 жыл бұрын
Do you mean Load to Final and Activate to Final? As loading is just getting ready and keeping it on standby whereas activating it actually engages the flight plan. And no idea on your second one - sorry!

Can you enter multiple waypoints into the GPS?
@JacksFSVideos7 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can just do it from the main FSX Interface before you launch into the flight

What airports are you trying it at?
@kbuss106 жыл бұрын
hi man! how on earth do you advance the waypoints if you have a flightplan and had a detour or cut a route leg? if i get back on the track later and omitted a few waypoints, the gps wont jump to the current route leg im on. even ATC want me to get back to the omitted waypoints and wont advance. its extremely annoying, and a joke. also how you insert a detour waypoint into a preloaded flightplan for example for refuelling reasons over the ocean? it wont let me do this after a selected leg it just deletes the whole previous flightplan and gives one leg whatever i do. I cant believe the real life gps500 would work like this. are there any game extension that address the dump ATC and GPS and would make it work more thorougly and logically? Also a lot of things doesnt seem to work properly sometimes like if the autopilot is buggy. im on FSX steam edition, is that a problem? hey thx a lot :)
@JacksFSVideos4 жыл бұрын
Just go into the FSX Flight Planner and reset up your plan with the same waypoints. You can't add in a detour on the GPS, in real life pilots wouldn't even use this GPS on commercial aircraft and they don't have one (those that do would allow you). There are bugs in FSX, it's somewhat become the big joke of the flight sim community, but there are fewer in Steam Edition

I just press alt and then click on the far left dropdown, then I click on "plan flight"! It makes it much easier!
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can do that in the main interface before evening starting a flight, but then it's just less realistic
@markmcculfor61136 жыл бұрын
Jack's FSX Videos but it might be more like filing a flight plan
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
Well in real life, pilots will enter it on the FMC, or the GPS for smaller aircraft
@markmcculfor61136 жыл бұрын
Jack's FSX Videos but first they would file a flight plan using the internet or phone
@JacksFSVideos6 жыл бұрын
Yes but that's all arranged before the flight and usually by the airline
